Mr Matthews said: "I think I'm the first person in the world to bet on my own life."

I'm sure, in all the thousands of years of human civilization and the billions upon billions of people who have lived and died, this is true.

Ok, I shouldn't be such a dick to someone who is dying, but there's nothing new under the Sun, bro.

In other news, William Hill spokesman/oddsmaker Graham Sharpe was sacked today after being accused of being soft. Mr. Sharpes' funeral is to be arranged following his death in two weeks time.

Why not? I mean, you aren't going to take the money with you... so might as well risk a small amount to spend a lot more (or give to family/charity) if you do survive.

CokeBear 2009-05-31 05:00:59 AM
Usually, people bet against their own life. Its called life insurance.

I am betting that he has a few of these bets, and something in his Life Insurance policy that pays off his Bookie when he finally loses. It lets him pre-collect on some of the insurance and have fun. That way, everyone wins.. umm.. sorta.

Step 1: Find unscrupulous doctor to give false diagnosis
Step 2: Bet on your life
Step 3: Profit!

Every time he wins he ought to just double down. Think how much he'll have in 20 years!

A charitable bookie

global wombats [TotalFark] 2009-05-31 07:48:14 AM
Whether or not the bookie was an idiot (or charitable), wasn't the important part.

The best part was

"I wasn't that fussed because everyone has to die some time.

But the interesting thing for me was how long it would take - would it take weeks or years?"

A great philosophy that.

GreenSun 2009-05-31 08:27:49 AM
I should bet on my life too. I bet that for the next 30 years I'll be alive. I want $30,000 (US dollars!) for each year that I live. The proceeds will go to charitable institutions, like GreenSun's Everyday Charity series - Everyday Food, Video Games, and Taxes.

Evilmogwai 2009-05-31 08:29:35 AM
since its only the 31st today shouldn't this story have waited at least a few hours? the bet is that he is still alive on June 1st.

/good for him though.
//now tell me the secret so I can tell it to my father.

If you give me 100 to 1 odds on $5, you're on.

CokeBear: Usually, people bet against their own life. Its called life insurance.

Personally, I find the idea of "death insurance" - a policy that that pays off if you live - refreshingly upbeat.

The only problem is the "insurer" may tire of paying, and "accidents" could happen.

Good for this guy. I'm genuinely happy for him.

Now. I have a terminal illness...I wonder if this could work for me, too.

dbaggins 2009-05-31 08:25:53 PM
uh ? who wouldn't bet on their own life if given odds and someone willing to take the bet ?

you lose, your dead, who cares ?

you win, free money.

seems like a no-brainer.

Next, the Republicans will have daily keno based on the number of abortions that are performed in a day in the country. lowest number wins, on a zero all are paid

If you get zero three days in a row you win the special Palin prize that allows you to play for the big money... guessing the peak number of abortions/day in New York

I'm actually in the UK where the bet was placed. They posted the article early, before he won the bet.

/Still good on him.
