I find it bemusing that Rush Limbaugh is a recognized leader of the Republican Party. He's always been a media personality, entertainment for conservatives and getting folks all fired up. Now, he is one of their key strategic and intellectual leaders.

Is that what you learned from the 2008 election?

unlikely [TotalFark] 2009-05-30 11:51:26 AM
Not news: Members of the GOP takes time away from defending Rape and Torture to make themselves look even more douchey. News: They are divided on just what brand of douchey to bring. Fark+: They just go ahead and bring it all.

I think they should run nonstop commercials that alternate between suggestions that she will render irrational decisions at "that time of the month", and poorly drawn cartoons of her as a borrachasnoozing in an oversized sombrero on the steps of the Supreme Court.

You know they want to.

I don't know. Is this judge really such a shing beacon that you need to launch into your fellow countrymen like that? Look at the headline. It is a hypocrite armed with a quotation mark figleaf.

I thought for a while that Obama was going to sail through 2012 because the GOP couldn't field a credible candidate. They still can't, but they are actually imploding so hard I am thinking that there is time for a third party challenger to rise up and actually win, with Obama in a close second and the Limbaugh/Palin ticket in third. Imagine a sane version of Ross Perot with a military service record, something like that, running as an independent.

You seem to be attempting to use reason. Phil's immune. He's begun with his conclusion that Sotomayor is an unacceptable nominee and will only give weight to positions that confirm his prejudice.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2009-05-30 12:32:00 PM
While I think there are some legitimate questions about the Sotomayor nomination (she could better explain some of her comments and legal decisions), I don't think the Republicans are in any sort of position to do anything about her confirmation.

Even if the Republicans have a legitimate complaint - which I'm not sure is true - they've so damaged themselves with their infighting and internal purges that they can't muster enough troops to put up a fight.

Consider this a preview of the 2010 midterm elections.

If a white guy had said what she did about Latinas being better able o make decisions then white men becuase of thier richer life experiences only reversed the roles he would have already been withdrawn.

"I would hope that a wise White Man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a Latina Woman who hasn't lived that life."

I know her quote was in regards to sexual harrassment and discrimination cases but if it had been applied to an area where white men should be expected to have some unjustified stereotypical knowledge such as, business ownership or country club membership, and it was implied by a Supreme court nominee that a Latina Woman would just not be able to make as good a judgment based on her race and sexual identity as a White Man when it came to such things, he would have been withdrawn already if ever nominated at all.

I would hope to FSM that we in this country would expect a Supreme Court justice to make decisions based on merit and not race, which she in her very own words can not.

Her statement in itself was Prejudice, Sexist, and Discriminatory and she should not get a pass on it.

Someone did. She wrote 380, 3 turned over. .79%. Roberts at 49 and 2 had a 4.08% turnover rate. Painfully obvious biased Republican is painfully obvious. Which makes it really funny. 3.

The average is around 75% for reversals, so she's better than average. Anyway, the 50% figure is meaningless - if the Supreme Court agreed with a decision, there's no reason for them to take it. 3/380 is much more relevant. (3 out of however many were appealed to the Supreme Court, I guess.)

Well one thing I've always admired about Americans is their willingness to have a heated debate and retain a sense of shared purpose. As a Canadian, I worry about that degree of contentiousness. I still do and think it's distracting.

if you go around saying 'everything for the race' then you're a racist. it's no different than those idiots who run around on the weekends shouting 'white power' at a bunch of protesters.

Sure, one of those la raza organizations is a bit more circumspect about itself, but just 'cause they've got coloring books in the kiddie section don't make them any fluffier or nicer.

Not that any of this matters. If the Democrats want to put Sotomayor on the Supreme Court, then she's going to end up on the bench. there is NOTHING the Republicans can do to stop it. They can't even delay it.

But why, oh why, would I ever expect you to be intellectually honest? Kinda like Weaver, who's been shot down on this issue in three threads now and refuses to admit it.

Sotomayor has ruled on 96 race discrimination cases. By a margin of 8-1, she ruled AGAINST the person claiming discrimination.

But hey, a partisan interpretation of a speech she gave one time is more important than how she actually does her job, right?
