Considering I am unemployed, I am not amused by his constant vacations. At least George W. Bush took care of his ranch when he wasn't in the White House.

I think the media has reported on the comings and goings of every president for quite some time.

More on the comings of one of them.

oh, they do... but I'm not sure of the balance...

I still remember the 3 days the press spent talking about Clinton when he went jogging and stopped at a McDonalds.

And now how Barry likes his cheeseburgers, etc...

I can't recall anyplace where Bush ate and had the media fawn over him for days....

/maybe I'm just old

I seem to remember plenty of it in Bush's early days. It's kind of a "getting to know the man in the Whitehouse" phase, combined with a "royalty mixes with the commoners" angle to news stories common the world over.

Granted, 9/11 really did change the likelihood of the President being out and about with the general public. In fact, if anything, there was considerable kowtowing and reverence towards Bush for quite some time after that.

Give it time. It will wear off, and if Obama is a two term president, expect the media to nitpick every fault the last few years when the general populace just wants dirt. Remember how merciless the press was to Diana before she died and earned sainthood?

I just hate all the 'behind the scenes' stories of how much they all love each other and how normal they are.
TIP: It's not 'behind the scenes' if a cameraman is present.

Yeah, but it's hardly his fault. It's not like he hired a newscrew to follow his every waking moment. I think we got less Bush "behind the scenes" because he had such a stranglehold on the media (i.e., "Now watch this drive" was never televised until Moore showed it in his movie). Obama seems to regard the media as a necessary evil.

I'm reading Audacity of Hope and Obama tells this story about how his opponent for the Senate elections hired a guy to shadow Obama wherever he went. The guy's name was Justin & would never be more than 5-10 feet away from Obama, constantly filming him. He'd overhear phone conversations, track him to the men's room, record him eating lunch. Obama asked the guy to lay off & he refused.

So one day Obama walked into where he knew a lot of the press was having lunch and said, "Hey guys, I want you to meet Justin. He's been hired to stalk me." The press jumped all over Justin, asking why he'd been hired, why his employer was so self-conscious that he had to resort to seeing Obama's every move, etc. Caused a huge backlash against his opponent.

You got to give the guy credit--he knows how to use the media to his advantage, too.

Also this. I think Obama is (1) media-savvy, to the point of thinking "it's a necessary evil, so I will manage how I end up looking, make sure to not seem too closed off, etc" and (2) actually interested in being open to direct questions about "so what is life in the White House like, anyway?"

But it's not like he hires the cameramen.

I think there is a lot of interest, too, because he has YOUNG kids. Carter was the last president to have a real "kid" in the White House - high school and above is more jaded.

AdolfOliverPanties: How long until they show up in the back pages of US magazine in the "Stars! They're Just Like Us!" section?

Well, one of the big star mags ("People" I think) did ONE story, restricted to one by the family, on how the family was preparing for and adjusting to the big move to the White House.

It was actually a good article, because it answered a lot of the mundane questions that people ARE interested in - what's it like to pack up all your stuff and move to a mansion for 4 or 8 years? How much control do you get over the house? Etc, particularly with kids involved.

But heck, I found it interesting reading just how Chelsea Clinton and the Bush twins dealt with going to college under Secret Service protection, too. Just odd trivia.

Tonight? The one Saturday night we get a sitter so we can escape the NJ suburbs for NY for a really nice dinner and now traffic is going to be f'd up (well more f'd up then a Sat evening into the city usually is)? This is not change I want to drive in (hope he's taking the chopper from JFK to lower Manhattan, less roads will be messed up).

Or it's like the media sees Obama as a cash cow to lure people into buying newspapers, magazines, looking at their web sites, etc.

1) Get a really popular President
2) Print up some magazines with the President on the cover
3) Profit!

The media likes to build people up before they tear them down. It makes for a more dramatic fall from grace. We're still in the happy unicorn build up phase.

'Oh, how the mighty have fallen!!!' comes later.

stop whining about the media you republican twats, instead use them to your advantage. Your farking Messiah Reagan knew how to keep them on a leash instead of constantly nagging how they are out to get right wing loons.

Everyone knows that you cant use the word "messiah" for anyone but The Obama so please refrain. Even Jesus has lost exclusivity so get it right or you will have to stand before The Obama messiah during judgment to explain your lack of faith.

The screech-fu is going lethal. We're being assaulted with media car alarms that are the product of Republican agitated depression. They just can't stand the way things turned out. They start wailing any time the Obamas appear on their radar, like fretful children freaking at shadows on the wall.
