I preferred the Dalai Lama three incarnations ago, before he sold out.

Yeah, I was kinda wierded out when I found that out too because I thought the same thing. I still really dig their earlier stuff, but haven't kept up with them since I found that out.

They continue to produce very good records -- the last album was a pretty damn great chance of pace, I liked it a lot -- but they've have yet to approach the blissful majesty of Ágætis byrjun, and likely never will.

That's okay, though. I've continued to enjoy what they do and kick myself for missing them at Radio City Music Hall.

It's not exactly imaginary, its a version of icelandic. Plus they are one of the most awesome bands in the world, so they can speak whatever they want.

/they're awesome

Ooo, Sigur Ros thread! I love them and have seen them live twice now. I'm also a pyrotechnician, so earlier this month I shot a show that I choreographed to their music.

The show was entirely 1.4G/consumer fireworks shot with a computer firing system. We had heavy rain earlier that day that damaged some product, leading to a 10-20% failure rate (including a very painful bit of dark sky near the beginning of Gobbledigook), but overall it went pretty well.

Crazy-long blog post with more pictures and info, plus link at bottom for higher quality downloadable file: 2009 Renn Fayre fireworks

Anyway, go Sigur Ros!

/heading off to light fireworks all day today
//but not to Sigur Ros

Oh, and some of their songs are in the made up language ("Hopelandic"), but quite a few are in Icelandic.

I love it how I keep submitting gold to this site and a link I submitted with a meh headline get over because I submitted it at 1 in the morning.

Also, for the record I absolutely love Sigur Ros. I just mentioned Vonlenska (the imaginary language) because it made for a better headline.

Sucks that Jonsi isn't performing with them for the Dalai Lama. His solo album better be worth was is probably going to be the band's biggest worldwide exposure outside of the near ubiquity of "Hoppipolla" on commercials.

The language is made up, much like scat. They're music is the most beautiful and awesome I have ever heard. I went to Iceland after I saw the documentary on their tour across the island, playing weird spots. I tell ya, you go and you have a new appreciation how delicate yet mighty our planet is. No wonder they're all pagans there.

Love this band so much I want to throw up because I haven't seen them yet.

Actually they sing mostly in Icelandic on all their albums with the exception of ( ) which is sung completely in the made up "hopelandic" language.

God, I love Sigur Ros. No one else around here seems to like them, though...

Love Sigur Ros. Came here just to say that.

is any of Sigur Ros' stuff outside of Ægetis Byrjun any good? I tried that album and was bored with it. I can get over the imaginary language as I can't understand Icelandic anyway, but the vocals were way too high-pitched for me.

Well if you didn't like Ágætis Byrjun you probably aren't going to like the other albums.

You should give Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust a try.

THIS

their latest album has them teamed up with a different producer who helped them tighten up their arrangements so they aren't as lengthy and therefore easier for the casual listener to get into.

that said, i like all their stuff. got to see them in berkeley last year, one of the best concerts i've seen. they sound phenomenal live.

Odin's Raven set is fantastical. There's a bootleg of it live on the webs.

I like older Sigur Ros, new stuff is just too...nice...and pleasant... The older stuff is moody and awesome
