Ok, this is pretty farked up.

I think every person that voted for this should have a tracking chip implanted into them. I mean, if they have nothing to hide, why wouldn't they?

FTFA: In some cases, those errors can turn deadly. On May 19, 2008 a Northumbria, UK police officer received an Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) alert about a passing Renault Megane automobile. Believing the vehicle could be driven by a dangerous criminal, the officer began following the Renault and hit speeds of 94 MPH in a residential neighborhood without using his siren. After cresting a hill, the police Volvo slammed into and killed sixteen-year-old pedestrian Hayley Adamson who did not see the police car coming. It turns out the database was wrong and the driver being chased was completely innocent. (View video of the incident up to the moment of the crash).

Okay not to theadjack, but if you were innocent why the fark would you run from police at 94MPH in a residential neighborhood. This is not the camera's fault. This is the farking moran that did not pull over's fault.

I like these small government conservative types who thinks its not the responsibility of government to give money to poor brown people but think its all right to spy on citizens.

I'm glad we don't have this in Massachusetts, where we value personal liberty.

It didn't say the driver was running. It just said the cop was speeding to catch up with him.

Watch the video. The cop didn't have his siren on, so the car probably didn't know he was being chased. The cop had to turn around and speed up to catch up to the car, which was going at a normal speed. It's entirely the camera/cop's fault.

They were coerced. If the Senators didn't vote for the bill, this guy would poke them with the Official Texas Turd on a Stick.

Even the poop is bigger in Texas.

DaSwankOne: This is the farking moran that did not pull over's fault.

Watch the video. The cop didn't have the emergency lights/siren on and must have gotten a bit lost because he made some sort of u-turn at one point. The cop obviously thought he'd run stealth to sneak up on the "perp."

The other guy's only crime was driving a Renault.

The only Renault I'm familiar with is the Alliance. It was not capable of 94mph.

the sad thing is this is likely a heck of a lot less about any idea of civil liberties or even effectiveness - it looks a helluva lot like the people who lost the contract for red light cameras in the house bill have pet senators to ensure they keep receiving state money.

Maybe Rick Perry will get rid of the provision, highly doubt that will occur though.

With the exception of a high number of hot women, I constantly feel less and less of a desire to ever visit Texas. Ever.

Anyone else remember that story from a year or two ago where the police in some major Texas city did a "DUI sting" by arresting people at a HOTEL bar for "intent to drive under the influence"?

Yea...fark that noise with a nine foot pole.

I think it was more like drunk in public, but yeah...

More so though, if you're driving on the hwy you're not in private, therefore this is no more a violation of privacy than say cameras in public areas filming pedestrians.

No, because it's impossible to ensure it would only be tracking wanted felons.

For the record, that was actually the origin of the phrase DIAF, at least on Fark. The PD spokesman said something like, "I don't understand the angry phone calls about this. I don't understand, 'die in a fire'."

Unfortunately, it already resulted in a killin'. If there's one way to guarantee Texans will rally around a policy, it's to make sure it does some killin'.

The fact that it was a cop doin' the killin' on a vicious, bloodthirsty, rampaging 16 year old pedestrian is just icin' on the cake.

If she weren't up to no good, what was she doin' outside? gettin' all in a cop's way and aidin' and abettin' a fugitive and tryin' to interfere with an officer in the performance of his sworn duties?

radiumsoup [TotalFark] 2009-05-29 03:28:04 PM
um...

TFA: British authorities have been using ANPR for several years, working to centralize ANPR data to allow police to keep tabs on criminals and political opponents. A data center in North London offers real-time, nationwide tracking capability. Australian and American red light camera companies hope to offer the same centralized tracking services in the US.

I don't even have to comment on this one.
