(California Chronicle) Sad CCR still drags on without Fogerty: "I'd be playing 'Born on the Bayou' with a club band, and I'm looking around, thinking this is our song, but I'm the one who's lost"   (californiachronicle.com) divider line 56

"That's the $64 question, isn't it?

Well, after how badly you all got screwed on your first contract, that sounds like the correct $ figure Stu.

Lawsuits for Fogerty sounding too much like himself probably didn't help either.

Given that it took a dying/crippled American soldier just to get Fogerty to even *think* about playing CCR songs again, no way he'd come back.

Still, good songs, good times.

I'm not a huge CCR fan but few if any things make me happier than the effect their music has on my sweetie.

She does this great kind of "Keep on Truckin/Cossack on Opiates" dance that I've never seen replicated by anyone else and starts singing whenever they come on.

It's one of those you kind of have to be there thing but believe you me, it's a thing of beauty.

I would normally consider this a very clever joke, but for some reason I have the feeling that you have no idea that that's Lynyrd Skynyrd.

FTA - The falling out between Fogerty and his fellow CCR members is legendary even by the standards of rock & roll's history of creative differences.

Would someone be so kind as to educate this Farker as to what caused such hard feelings between the band members?

Tom Fogerty's "friend" was their manager, and he (the manager) ended up owning the rights to the songs CCR (John Fogerty) wrote. It got so bad that J Fogerty got sued for sounding too much like himself/CCR.

Tom, on his deathbed, refused to side with J Fogerty saying the Manager (Saul Zaentz) was a good guy and did not really screw CCR/J Fogerty over.

That was the last conversation the brothers had.

Where: Wild Adventures, Old Clyattville Road.

Admission: The show is included in the park's regular admission price. Reserved seating available at an additional cost.

Pretty much. The only artist I really wanted to see that played there was B.B. King, but that was before I moved to Valdosta for college. I'm glad I am not the only one who thought it was hilarious that the local rag did a lengthy article about CCR sans Fogerty playing at Wild Adventures.

I got to see CCRevisited at Yasgur's Farm in '98 or '99, can't remember which - and while obviously it wasn't the full Creedence experience without John, Stu and Doug may have been the two musicians out of all the acts playing that day who were the happiest to be back where they played in '69, and the band correspondingly played their asses off. So at least that one time the replacement-lead-singer gambit wasn't lame.

mitchcumpstein: How can he get lost when every song is in E and 4/4?

Well, there's a ton of variations. One song might be all "dundun DUN dundun DUN dundun DUN DUN DUN DUN dundun dun," and another might go "dun dun dundundun DUNdun dun dun." See the difference?

/Played CCR in my college band, know my duns from my DUNS

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with you, but it's more of a "which mountain is taller, Everest or Mauna Kea" type argument.

The Minutemen and The Byrds were great too, if you really want to muddy the waters.

Bob Dylan: is there nothing he can't do?

And seriously, the first three CCR albums are joys to behold; I STILL listen to them and only wish there were some decent live recording of them stretching it out.

FYI Saul Zaentz (or whatever) was the head of FANTASY Records and a well-known scam artist; I have never heard about him being Tom Fogerty's friend. He is worse than Robbie Robertson and Al Grossman and those two REALLY farked over the rest of The Band re: royalies and song writing credits.
Honestly, Robbie Robertson is the biggest bullshiat artist ever.

As far as John Forgerty goes: Blue Ridge Rangers is good and his self titled record is good but the rest? Crap, pure and simple.

Centerfield? Sucks.
Old Man down the road? Terrible
etc etc etc.

You might be disappointed there.... CCR was the first rock concert I went to (Booker T and the MGs opened.) They played a total of 45 minutes, including 15min of "Keep on Chooglin'). Still, as a 14year old guitar player, seeing Fogerty and Steve Cropper on the same night was awesome.

Sounds like it was a great show; loves me some MGs.
And I didn't go into more detail but you're right; CCR was fairly notorious for short shows - usually in the 1 hour range- and little improv.

I didn't mention their one 'live' album because it isn't very good which is why I have a 'wish list' for some decent, long versions of those songs, something that will never be available.

There's veeeeeeeeeeery little that I wouldn't do for the opportunity to go back in time and view that concert through your eyes (and ears).

Regardless of the possibility of him re-joining the band, no one, NO ONE could lay down a rock and roll wail like John Fogerty when he was in his prime.

I actually hated CCR at first, having only heard their radio songs. Then when I told my friend about it while tripping on acid in '85, he had me listen to an entire album, and non-hits were amazing stuff.

FredGarvin 2009-05-29 04:05:24 AM
Fogerty was, is, and always will be CCR. He wrote the songs, sang them, and played all the guitar worth mentioning. Cook and Clifford were nothing more than backing musicians.

Given the fact that Fogerty has been screwed over worse than anyone in the history of rock music, and that he could find better musicians to play with in a soup line who HAVEN'T been milking HIS talent for the last 30 years, I'd say it's unlikely he'd bother to play with these guys.

Anyone else would have sued the pants off these weasels long ago. John Fogerty has shown some real class, and reiterated his great talent since the CCR days, go see him, and let these losers open up for the puppet show at the county fair.

Cat Food Sandwiches 2009-05-29 08:19:48 AM

"Who'll stop the rain" is in G major (which is Em but it resolves to G)

"Born on the Bayou" is in D major IIRC.

"Lookin' Out My Back Door" (or "Doo Doo Ma Back Do'" as my son refers to it) is in Bb and then C after the key change. My son is not even two yet and has loved that song since he could sit up... demands I play it every time I pick up the guitar.

Anyhow, I really dig Creedence and love the Big Lebowski... I think it's important to share that.

badkaraoke 2009-05-29 10:08:31 AM
The killer 3 chord one from Fogerty is Rock N Roll Girls. I know it's not CCR but yeesh he milks that pretty well.

Also, if you sing the backup lyric to Petula Clark's "Downtown" after each verse phrase it sounds kind of funny.

Hugh Jacknit 2009-05-29 10:16:26 AM

I'm not denying that Robertson's a big BS artist, but you can't really blame him in a way. In the end, he bought up Band members' song rights at a point that they were so farked up on drugs that they would have sold the rights for a hefty bag of junk.
