The woman struck by a Shriners doon buggy Monday during the Victoria Parade in Woodstock, sustained only minor injuries Oxford Community Police say.

OCPS Sergeant Wayne Sczepanski said the collision happened while the buggies were doing a circular formation on Dundas Street near Victoria Street.

The sidewalk widens at the part of the street where the collision took place.

At the time of the collision the woman who was in her early 20s was trying to move her young daughter back out of the way. The doon buggy ran into her legs before stopping. She was taken to hospital by ambulance and later released.

The London Shriner driving the buggy is not facing charges for the incident.

Sczepanski said because the road was closed due to the parade the incident is not classified as a motor vehicle collision. Police did investigate and no charges are pending.

Was she taken to a Shriners Hospital and made to sign extra waivers when admitted?

As much as I like making fun of, well... pretty much anything that stands upright, Shriners are one of the true good forces at work on this planet.

Maybe I'm just uninformed about this, but isn't the vehicle in question a dune buggy and not a doon buggy? I always assumed the name came from the vehicle being designed to traverse sand-dunes. You know, on beaches, deserts, and other such sand-dune filled places.

Damn straight!!
My dad died when I was very young and we grew up very poor, but I was fairly smart. These folks put me through Engineering school!
No one we ever knew was a Mason, they just pick out kids they think have potential and help them out. Good folks.

Now I try to help when I can -the circle continues.

That's a great story. Every once and a while somebody makes me realize that not all people are useless turds. Thank you sir.

Uhh... the story's in London-- they tend to spell things more/or less "correctly" over there depending on your point of view.

And I can see why the driver wasn't charged. It must be hard to drive in those funny shoes.

I came here to say the same thing. I've never heard of doon buggies, I've only ever heard of dune buggies.

Doon

WTF is a doon? It's obvious they aren't referring to a buggy somehow related to Loch Doon or the River Doon, as the d they use is lowercase. Wait, I know, maybe the author is an idiot.

I once made the big mistake of taking my 5yo son and two of his friends to a Shriner's Circus.

1. The general circus acts were the cheapest that could be hired.
2. Shriner's members get their jollies by dressing up as clowns and contribute way to many non entertaining performances. I can now understand why children find clowns scary.
3. 'Souvenir' sellers unmercifully work the children in the audience selling all sorts of crap such as a translucent plastic sword lit up by an internal flashlight bulb.

Kudos to subby for switching from "tiny" to "teeny". It's little alterations in phraseology like that that squeeze every bit of comedy out of a sentence...

ArtemisGoldfish 2009-05-25 03:28:29 AM
As weird as the Shriner's circus people are, the Shriner's hospital people are like, absolutely fantabulous. I was fused in 2006 after like...9 years of free care for scoliosis. The hospital was great, very clean, great medical staff.

Does the "scary" tag refer to the alleged writing skills of the reporter? and it's most likely London ONTARIO, not London, England. Also, yes, it is a DUNE buggy, not a 'doon' buggy. Cripes.

Nope, we spell it DUNE in Canada.

If only there was an organization that dealt in free health services specialized for the legs...

I was off in my own little world one Memorial day morning a few years ago, and I was crossing the street to join my family and friends to watch a parade, and hadn't noticed the parade had started. Next thing I knew, all these people were shouting at me to get out of the way - I was smack dab in the middle of a bunch of little Shriner's cars going 'round and 'round, and in my haste to get out of the way, I fell ass over tin cups on one of the cars. I was extremely embarrassed but unhurt, the little car was fine, but I had a bunch of Shriners really mad at me for spoiling their display of military precision driving. My family will never let me forget it, so I'm getting a small kick ftfa.

Funny enough, I'm going to the same parade in a little while. I will try my best to stay out of the way this time. Nothing like a Memorial Day celebration in a small town - I will be given flags from the local VFW commander to put on our Dad's (Captain AAC, WWII) and my older brother's (LT,USMC,Vietnam, KIA) graves. Such a great thing for them to do, the ceremony always chokes me up.

Happy Memorial Day everyone, especially to all Farkers who are serving in the military. Thank you.

I've seen people almost run over during parades because there are gaps spaced into the line-up and people start running across the street. I can never decide if this is for any potential congestion, or for inserting commercial breaks in public access simulcasting or what.

Of course, the number of people who don't seem to understand that a street is still a street during a parade is sorta mind-boggling. I don't know how the Shriners manage to do what they do with people who decide they need to take up three feet of the street as well as the sidewalk.

It's like watching cows wandering into oncoming traffic. I'm surprised she didn't shiat the road and moo when the go-kart hit her.

edmo 2009-05-25 11:15:07 AM
The car and hospital just look tiny. It's that perspective thing.
