EllaFitzgerald [TotalFark] 2009-05-24 09:05:23 PM
FTA: He had a grave decision to make on May 7, when an ultrasound revealed five clusters of tumors in the dog's tummy.

Seymour ruled out the veterinarian's offer of chemotherapy... Also, the veterinarian had said the dog might not survive the surgery to remove the tumors.

Instead of having Brittney put down then, Seymour eagerly accepted the offer of giving his companion steroids to blunt the pain until death comes naturally, probably within a few weeks.

Nowhere in the article is it suggested that owner considered euthanizing the dog on May 7. Just sayin'. The dog was barking insistently because she was in discomfort from the smoke or heat and wanted the owner to let her out.

There are enough great stories out there to obviate the need for made-up ones like this. Also, what self-respecting journalist over the age of five uses the word "tummy" rather than "stomach?"

I'm not railing at subby. I'm railing at the crap that passes for journalism today.

EllaFitzgerald: Nowhere in the article is it suggested that owner considered euthanizing the dog on May 7.

From TFA:

Scott Seymour's decision not to euthanize his cancer-filled dog loomed large Saturday when the 9-year-old American bulldog awakened him to escape his burning house.

That was the first sentence. Also, a little further down:

He had a grave decision to make on May 7, when an ultrasound revealed five clusters of tumors in the dog's tummy.

Instead of having Brittney put down then, Seymour eagerly accepted the offer of giving his companion steroids to blunt the pain until death comes naturally, probably within a few weeks.

jst3p 2009-05-24 10:24:09 PM
So, in order to ease his guilt at not doing the humane thing but rather allowing the dog to live in pain he credits the dog for "saving his life" when it very possible that he may have woken up on his own.

Kyro [TotalFark] 2009-05-24 10:25:23 PM
Great dog, but the owner is an asshole. Refused chemo because it would "probably be too much." Refused surgery because she "might not make it." Refused to put her to sleep, instead opting to keep her drugged up until the cancer definitely kills her.

Sounds to me like he was too cheap to pay for her treatment, and too cowardice to spare her the pain of slowly dying.

(and good on him for spoilng his dog gastronomically until the end of her days...we did the same with our beloved Onyx (sauteed chicken and buttered egg noodles every night for her last week on earth except for her last Thursday when we went to a drive-in and she had a cheeseburger and fries) when she was diagnosed stage five lymphoma...we only had her for one week after the diagnosis... sonuvabiatch, here come the tears....

You know, most of the cat people I know, myself included, like dogs but just prefer cats. However, more often than not it seems that dog people have to take any opportunity to assert their hatred for cats. Why is that? Personally I think some people can't appreciate an animal that doesn't live to please humans. A cat won't fawn and slobber all over you, and they just don't make good penis compensation the way a big snarling pit bull or rottweiler on the end of leash will.

Banned here in Ontario.
Fear, ignorance and irresponsible owners.
Guess it's easier to enforce a breed ban than enforce responsibility on the human owners.

Cats are intelligent creatures.

Some dogs are "smart" (learns tricks) and a few are intelligent (Jack Russell Terrier).

Both are lovers, loyal and protective if they like you.

But, you have to show a dog where a door is, a cat sees doors and knows how they work.

Cats know who doesn't like them and act accordingly (peeing on their things). Dogs don't know or care, to their credit.

Dogs, bless them all, just love you because you are there whether you just kicked them or not. The cat will get even, in its way.

I am a dog and a cat person, like creatures in general including some humans. Neither is better, they are just different.

I wouldn't put a nine year old bulldog through chemo. They have a fairly short lifespan anyway. Chemo sucks balls when it's an adult who can understand why s/he feels so bad. I always ask the vet what s/he would do if it were the vet's pet. Maybe he did the same.

Our old lab got to 15 1/2 before we euthanized him. We may have waited too long; maybe not.

We opted against a second thyroidectomy for our 9 year old husky because the complications of the dog having no parathyroids or thyroids seemed an unfair burden for her to bear. We kept her as comfortable as we could, and euthanized her when she was ready. We sure as hell weren't. I miss that dog every farking day. Unfortunately, she was a very, very unhealthy dog. She had a parathyroid tumor and then another one. She also had arthritis in her hips and had had a knee replacement surgery.

Money is not always the primary determinant against aggressive treatment.
