There ARE some non-whackjob denominations still in the Southern Baptist Convention. A good friend of mine in that church said the congregation voted to remain in the SBC because they feel they can work from the inside.

That's all great advice for anyone in a position of dealing with the media.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't give up sooner or later. They've taken this line for about a decade, and the more moderate elements fragment away. I give them credit for still trying, though.

Phillips: Generally speaking, reporters are out to get the story. There are clear cases of bias in the media, but even the most slanted reporters almost always give the other side a chance to speak. Keep in mind the difference between a news story, analysis and commentary."

I... damn. That would not have been the answer I'd've predicted.

I grew up in the Southern Baptist Church. My father was in the military, so we moved all over the world my entire childhood. When we moved into a new area, one of the first things we did was look for a new church, which of course required visiting several. The Southern Baptists as a denomination are very different from other religions in the way they are organized. Each church pretty much governs itself. You'll find everything from extremely fundamental, hell-fire-and brimstone ,screaming in the pulpit preaching to very moderate and tolerant types of churches. It's actually very strange. You can't really generalize when it comes to Southern Baptists.

And a "split" between the moderates and the fundies has been talked about for as long as I can remember.

Saved it for myself.

If I ever have to deal with the media in any leadership position.
But especially since I just started my own business again.

Hopefully someday I'll be in a position of influence for them to desire to talk to me
and not for another more absurd reason or a fiasco.

/I prefer to prevent those...I don't know why.

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"

He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"

FTFA: Who decides what news is?

Phillips: The news media. We can influence the news-suggest angles, pitch stories and help shape the reporting of events, but ultimately news directors and editors decide what gets played. However, the emergence of social media is diminishing the control of news and information once held by newspapers, radio and TV stations. In many ways, this is a positive development, but not without its risks since the social media are largely unedited.

Kind of off topic here, but that's kinda scary to me. Newspapers and television stations are owned and controlled by relatively few companies, and you have so many voices screaming on the internet it's almost impossible to decide who to listen to. How the hell are we supposed to know what's true and what isn't, what's biased and what's objective? Serious question here.

TFA, while informative, read like something I was assigned my freshman year, in CMMA100, Intro to News Writing.

Realistically, these are good guidelines for anyone in ANY line of work who is charged with representing a company. You could be giving rainbows and fairydust to kids with cancer, and a good, or diligent journalist can make your organization look awful if you don't interview well.

It IS scary. This is one of the reasons I can understand the justified frustration the general educated public has with the MSM complex. My solution: if there's an issue you care about, or an item you read about in a news story, do your own research about the topic. Check facts from a variety of sources, see if similar stories have been run about the same topic, and so forth. Yes, this is a very time consuming process, but you'll come away from your efforts with a much better (and likely unbiased) understanding of the situation as a whole. I see doing anything else as a shortcut that will eventually lead you to the same conclusion as the sources you were trying to get away from.

Sounds like a Scientologist.
They also have the mindset that "Everyone is out to get them." That has become a self-enforced prophecy as their paranoid humanity-destroying actions have so antagonized everyone around them and anyone critical of them, that they've enforced the necessary response by humanity to destroy the Scientologists.

Baptists have started outsourcing media relations to the Jews.

This is actually pretty common sense advice for dealing with reporters in general, regardless of what you're being interviewed about.

I'm going to guess this site is affiliated with one of the more sane branches of the church, as if this were posted anywhere BUT a Baptist site, I think pretty much everyone would agree it's good advice (a bit obvious perhaps, but otherwise fine).

Even if you don't like some reporters, remember never to pick a fight with people who buy paper by the ton and ink by the barrel.

Try to keep this advice away from the far-far left and right. Otherwise, nothing will ever get done. The last thing we need is for Beck or Limbaugh to start being cordial to the opposite side media.
