My vote is George Michael. NOBODY could ever replace Freddie, but he would be a good fit.

strangeguitar 2009-05-24 11:59:15 AM
I've seen Jeff sing with Yngwie a couple of times. Not the most challenging vocal parts, but he had some great pipes. I'd like to see him do Freddie's stuff. Didn't see him with Journey.

I'd rather not see anyone try to replace Freddy.

Somethings need not be replaced and continue.

I tend to agree. I'm not that big a Queen fan, but I'd hate to be deprived of seeing Brian May play again.

I understand your sentiment and feel the same way - Freddie can never be replaced.

However, Queen kinda sorta needs a singer so that they can play songs that have lyrics - even if the singer is not as good as Freddie.

Never heard of the guy before but I just watched several of the videos of Jeff Scott Soto on YouTube....

The guy is good. And more importantly, he doesn't sound like he's trying to copy Freddie which is where so many fail so horribly. He's got some good pipes and did a good job with the songs I listened to.

May and Taylor need to get two or three singers to rotate during shows to cover the range of material.

I love George Michael but he just doesn't have the pipes to pull of Queen songs in a way that would be unique yet respectful to the memory of Freddie.

It's hard to find someone like Freddie.

I disagree. He has the chops to pull off Queen songs. See exhibit A (new window).

Mika, no question. He has the pipes and the attitude. He's no Freddie, but why not get as close as possible?

I must admit, I am really impressed. However, I would like to see how well he does in the tunes with a much higher range.

How about Mariah Carey?

She's got the range and she's... um... unique.

hamsack 2009-05-24 02:51:09 PM
I thought Paul Rogers pulled it off pretty well.

IMDWalrus [TotalFark] 2009-05-24 02:53:19 PM
Just looked up Adam Lambert on YouTube. The kid isn't bad, but he doesn't seem like a fit for the band.

Either of the other two, though, would be good choices. shadowself: I must admit, I am really impressed. However, I would like to see how well he does in the tunes with a much higher range.

Probably about the same as Paul Rodgers did. As far as I can tell, they just avoided the songs that were out of his range, like "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy."

For what it's worth, though, George Michael nailed the high note at the end of "Somebody to Love," so that might actually be less of an issue there.

The highest notes in that song are falsetto. I would like to hear him try one where he has to belt it out in the modal register.

jj325 [TotalFark] 2009-05-24 03:16:42 PM
As a fan from way back I would be interested in hearing George Michael sing with Queen. I'm not really familiar with his work, but after checking out some live clips he does have some chops, and stage presence. I thought Paul Rodgers was a poor choice--a great singer, a great frontman, but a voice so distinctive that I kept expecting to hear Bad Company songs. What would be awesome is if they could get John Deacon involved again....

Chastain86 2009-05-24 03:16:42 PM
When Queen reunited I felt it was stupid to NOT ask George Michael to front the band. Glad to hear they may finally... ahem, "rectify" that situation.

The same thing Freddie would do. Have Roger sing 'em. People forget that when the three sang together, Freddie usually took the low part of the harmony under Roger and Brian.

FWIW, while George Michael's name has been brought up in the 17-18 years since that concert, I've always been of the opinion that Gary Cherone did a better job with the Queen medley with Extreme earlier that day.

Take a look. (new window)

How about they just don't bother, delete all the Queen + Paul Rodgers stuff, and leave the memory of a great band as untainted as possible from the cashing in nonsense of a reunion without Freddy.

they would have buried the band with Freddie.

I thought they were gonna go w/ Michael back in '91 right after Freddie died. Those rumors started up immediately, and I was all for it.

/man, do I miss Freddie Mercury!

I completely agree... ya, know... play a one off show every couple years or something... get a few singers to perform your classics... but don't go around touring as Queen... that just comes across as tacky.

Yeah, and if you MUST tour, at least have the decency to not charge us a hundred bucks a ticket to see the clown from Bad Company.

Extreme was my favorite part of the whole show.

Freddie never did in concert - the band tuned down and the drummer sang most of the high stuff to save Freddie's voice. Still incredible.

George Micheal get my vote.. say what you want about his history or whatever... but "Listen Without Prejudice" is a great album.
plus he sounds great with them and the whole gay thing.. they could all blow each other or whatever they do..

He should just name his albums "Date Album #1, 2, 3, ect"

Why not get Geoff Tate and call it "Queen + Queensryche"?

Seriously, yes indeed, I think that either Adam Lambert or George Michael can do that vocal job admirably. And -- Ryker's Peninsula also has a nod of approval with Geoff Tate because that dude can sing his ass off. Good mention, RP.

I mean, he's basically the metal version of Freddie Mercury. I also love their cover of spread your wings.

why do people write micheal for michael all the time?

and not just on Fark.
there's a barber down the street with a neon sign that says

MICHEAL'S.

I've decided he can't possibly be that stupid,
just to cheap to replace it.

FredGarvin 2009-05-24 08:54:44 PM
As hard as it is to go on without a frontman as distinctive as freddie, I disagree with the "never play again" sentiment. Don't forget Queen had 2 other vocalists who could front a band in their own right, and 3 other members who wrote number 1 hits.

Rodgers did a great job, George Michael could fill in as well as anybody who comes to mind.

I'd like to see Gail Ann Dorsey do it. She sings all of Freddie's parts when Bowie does "Under Pressure", and could replace John Deacon on bass, too.

suze 2009-05-24 08:57:35 PM
Mika would be the best choice, but would he want to? I think he's happier as a solo artist.

Also, he's half the age of the other guys.
