I love Ska. My absolute favoritist form of music ever :) With SoCa being right up there with it.

It's happy bouncy music :D

I like it. Ska needs a revival. I was interested as to the omission of (early) No Doubt, though.

What about the influential ska song "Jesus is a Friend of Mine"?

Which, coincidentally, is how long ska lasted.

Okay I see there has already been reprimand enough for that unthinkable no doubt comment in a ska thread.

God farkin dammit, they suck.

I've never been able to distinguish between ska and reggae, except that if I love it, it's usually reggae, and if I'm kinda meh, it's usually considered ska. Madness being one exception. They kick ass.

Is this is where I say how much it sucks to having to call them 'The English Beat' because some lesser poxy US band had the name first?

I wish it would've kept going, throw in some Streetlight Manifesto, Mustard Plug, The Planet Smashers, Bomb the Music Industry!, Aquabats, Big D and the Kids Table, Less Than Jake, RX Bandits, Suicide Machines...

Can anyone list some more ska bands? I'm probably missing a bunch, but I'm also exluding a lot of New Jersey ska-sceners.

Buck o Nine (new window)

Impossible 5

Homegrown (more punk than ska? dunno) (new window)

Mealticket

The Urge (new window)

All are from SoCal except The Urge, I believe.

/Aquabats never disappoint. One of the most fun shows I've ever seen.

I've been a Ska fan ever since my ears first caught wind of Reel Big Fish.

Another few good bands are Link80, and SkaDaddyZ. Other than those two bands all the basics have been covered here.

krakon04: All are from SoCal except The Urge, I believe.

They're from St. Louis. I don't think they've played a show in 5 years but quite a few people in the Missouri-Kansas-Illinois-Nebraska area still know them pretty well.

Gratch 2009-05-24 11:36:59 PM
I'm not a huge ska fan, but two of the best live shows I've ever seen were both from ska bands:

- Skankin' Pickle, Mephiskapheles, MU330, Blue Meanies all on the same bill
- Voodoo Glow Skulls, with Aquabats as the opener

I've seen The Aquabats multiple times since, and they're always an absolute blast. Mephiskapheles was probably the best of the bunch because they were a) freakishly talented, b) the only satanic ska band around and c) the Bumblebee Tuna Song (new window) is indescribably awesome.

/good luck getting it out of your head

I'll admit a very special place in my heart for that early, poorly recorded ska (a la Trojan records) above most all else. Love it, love it, love it.

I saw them a couple of years ago with Lynval Golding from the Specials and Pauline Black from the Selecter. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Opened with "A Message to You, Rudy."

I would lake to add:

Common Rider
LeftOver Crack
Catch22
Streetlight Manifesto
Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution
Less than Jake
Sublime

And many others I can't think of right now

It only gets more confusing man. That early reggae is all divided up into dancehall, rocksteady, bebop (Yeah, like TMNT). Subgenres are tough, the hipsters make it hard to get into their secret circles.

Good rule of thumb: Horn section, quick tempo, over use of black and white checkerboard = probably ska.

Dreadlocks(whether white or black)/numerous ganja references/the colors yellow, red and gold on beanies and the evenutal encore of "One Love" = reggae.

I'm a big fan though, of both genres. Especially dub reggae. Any fans?

Yep, bit of a dub fan here. Really like Mad Professor and Prince Far I mainly, and a bit of King Tubby. Trying to broaden my tastes though. Any suggestions?

I really like the ska from the late 70s/early 80s. The first wave never really interested me, and the 90s stuff I always hated. But I really love Madness, The Specials, and to a lesser extent, The Police. Then again, I'm a pretty big fan of post-punk: New Wave, Goth, Industrial, even Synthpop. Whee.

The Scientist, The Aggrovators, Gregory Isaacs, Sly and the Revolutionaries are some good ones.

Better than that, if you can find this, it'll point you in the right direction, that's where I heard of a lot of those guys. The torrent is out there, if that's your style, as well.

Well, they blew through first generation in about 30 seconds. Some of that stuff is fantastic. Hell, half of the Two Tone comp are covers from the first generation (Too Much Pressure, Gangsters, etc.)

Came to say THIS.

The Skatellites get one mention in a 'HISTORY' of ska?

That wasn't a history, it was fan who couldn't wait to mention her favorite bands.

Yes - and extremely boring and uninformative.

BaronVonAsshat: I like it. Ska needs a revival. I was interested as to the omission of (early) No Doubt, though.

Revival isn't the right word, depending on how you look at it. As far as "waves" go, I don't know if there will be another wave, simply because mainstream radio is getting more and more "safe" despite the fact that you could put bands like Hepcat or The Aggrolites on any funk/jazz station, or RBF (which has gotten better since they left Mojo) or Streetlight Manifesto on just about any pop station and people would dig it.

The bands are out there, and the tours are getting better (as Bucket said in The Upbeat, the older bands are realizing that you have to tour to make any money nowadays).

No love for The Blue Meanies? They were pretty out there for ska, but were always on bills w/Urge, Mephi, MU330 etc.
