Reminds me of Starship Troopers actually.

This whole "OH GNOES SWINE FLU WENT AWAY AND WILL COME BACK AS KILLER VIRUS" shiat has to end. There's no predictability to random genetic drift. And a key gene that made Spanish Flu so awful is missing from this flu. It's not going to pop up out of nowhere. It would have to result from mixing of an influenza with that gene and swine flu in the same cell of a host who got the two flus at once. It can happen. Doesn't mean it will.

Stop worrying and live your life while you have it. You could be hit by a bus tomorrow.

Any idea what this cost?

I only hope, one day, we find out the truth on what just (almost?) did or did not happen.

OBTW, the puppet show in the madia was and is a complete farce. None of the shenanigans make any sense in a real world plague scenario.

Unless you have real world, hands on plague experience and/or peer reviewed opinions, just accept that.

This has Jack and shiat to do with wanting to take the heat off Obama, and EVERYTHING to do with ratings. Fear sells. Fear sells A LOT. If you tell people "OMG THERE'S A HORRIBLE VIRUS THAT COULD KILL YOU AAGGGHAGH. More at 11." You can be sure as shiat people are gonna tune in at 11 to find out how to NOT DIE. It has *everthing* to do with the advent of '24 hour news channels' driven by ratings.shiat like this happened when Bush was president, too.

The media, as a whole, isn't biased towards Red or Blue. It's biased towards green. (And no, not "Let's save the earth" type green.)

So harsh.
We need a deal where everybody wins,,,
Say, give Kalifornia to Mexico.
Give Mexico to the Skull and Bones guys to drill, mine, rape, pillage and create a thousand mile wide toxic no man's zone. Nuke anything that moves north from Central America.
Have a nice day.

If you read the link, you would have noticed that all it did was summarize an AP story. In fact, that is what most of the greenlit Kos links are, while most right wing site links are op-ed WHAARRGARBL.

while I don't think we're in any immediate danger, I hope to God that this country (or the world, for that matter) never experiences another epidemic like that of the 1917-18 event(s). it would be bad. worse than zombie apocalypse level bad. I've read stories about those days and I have no desire to see that happen to anyone.

Well, it would effectively *be* a zombie apocalypse. But unlike a zombie apocalypse, you can't easily tell who's infected and who isn't...

no, that epidemic seemed to really like munching on people between the ages of 20-35. they said your lungs just filled up and you suffocated to death. Fast acting too - killed you in about 5 days. And a lot of surviors have varying levels of lung damage.

I cannot imagine the chaos and panic that would ensue on the east coast if something like that were to occur in this day and age.

btw... 8,000 people died from AIDS today. Panic?

Wayfarer's Freedom 2009-05-24 04:04:22 PM
It's bird-pig-human flu. How does 3 strands of the virus come together naturally like this? It doesn't!!! The public actually believes It came from mexicans rolling around in the mud with pigs.

Just like some taliban in a cave cause buildings to fall. lolz

some swedish girl 2009-05-24 04:05:19 PM
Maybe the Spanish flu wasn't as deadly as it come across and wouldn't be as deadly today because it went down right after world war one and moving in to the great depression, when there wasn't as much fabulous health care, good medical conditions and people were generally malnourished and in a bad place in life.

hmm, good point. A swine flu epidemic would tend to solve our AIDS crisis. NOT the preferred solution of course, but one does try to find the silver lining where one can.

keckster 2009-05-24 04:06:41 PM
Ugh. That was essentially a Wikipedia book report written to shore up a false assumption. Just because it happened in 1918 doesn't mean it will happen again. The virus could just as easily recombine with a less harmful strain, or just continue doing what it's been doing when it gets cold again.

If anything, this article only proved to me that whoever is greenlighting things has been really off the mark lately.

I think I really do have swine flu -- been sick with all the classic symptoms since Tuesday. Having dealt with it for five days now, I think I can safely say:

I'll get over it.

the weird part of the 1918 flu epidemic was that the virus seemed to specifically target the young and healthy. that, on top of the war deaths, almost completely wiped out an entire generation of kids.

That's because the young healthy kids were off dancing the Charleston and physically welcoming the soldiers home, so they were more likely to catch things... or something.

Aren't you supposed to be off someplace mocking disabled

Cytokine storm.

The healthier immune systems got in a positive feedback loop.

well ok, if we're gonna go that route then yes...once the plague is in full swing, i'm going to go on a records destroying binge. Property records, tax records, credit card company records...all that stuff will be sitting there undefended. we could burn it all and nobody would be the wiser. that way society would get a clean start when they go to rebuild.
