Wasn't Edwards AFB "lunched" by a famous mountain and his small wooden wife?

/not obscure

Apollo 13 is on AMC right now. If you missed it, I hear they are reshowing it on CNN, FoxNews, HN, MSNBC, NBC, FOX, ABC, and CBS later today.

Godspeed, or Machspeed to you, Atlantis crew.

I like that huge compass they etched into the ground at Edwards.

Yes.

swahnhennessy 2009-05-24 10:36:00 AM
Headline makes it sound like some emergency. It's diverted due to weather. Big freakin' deal. Shuttle landings are no more of a news item that shuttle launchings, save for those times when they explode. There's nothing about this that leads one to suspect Atlantis will blow up.

I don't think that's a concern. They're only diverting it to Edwards because the storm system over Kennedy won't clear up by tomorrow, which is when the shuttle runs out of supplies.

TJT 2009-05-24 10:39:51 AM
This is pretty cool. I live in California so I will get to hear the sonic boom. (You too Burbank ZombieCohagen) I wish I had time to drive out to Edwards and watch the landing.

why is this story on FARK?
It is legitimate news. People like to watch it go overhead, some can rush out to see it land. It is good to know why the sonic boom. Explain.

We're not worried about the weather. we're worried about the 21-inch scratch on the belly of the orbiter, which NASA says "won't be a problem"

Well, it means no Space Donuts for NASA employees for at least a month because it will suck about $2 million out of the budget to transfer the shuttle from Edwards to KSC.

why do they bother trying to land in florida when it's spring/summer? and then when they see there's thunderstorms all week they still delay landing day after day until they can't anymore and go to edwards. Just decide to go to edwards earlier :P

I occasionally show it in the Apollo FCR (MOCR 2). I hit play on the DVD player when Gene Kranz tells me to.

sonic boom is made when air like hands clap to good music or awesome football play. there are two maybe three different wind which hit.

Old data. Inflation etc., hence the long wait.

It saves a lot of time to land in Florida.

I used to love traveling out to Edwards to watch it land.

Naw, the one launch explosion was only a big deal because like almost every kid in America was watching it because a teacher was onboard. The poor little snowflakes who were not allowed to own pets learned about death that day. The other explosion doesn't count as a launch accident as it assploded when attempting to land. And even that was successful as it did land, from one end of Texas all the way to Florida.

When I lived in Winnetka, used to enjoy the double boom. Now that I live in Oregon, closest thing to that sound is some red neck cleaning his gun.

JuicyJ: Why is this important? Seriously I want to know.

Because science is a good thing? Because another shuttle accident would be a major blow to NASA and our national frame of mind, already shaky due to the economy.

Oh, and there are human beings up there, with families and friends who are waiting to see them safely home.

eggi541: When I lived in Winnetka, used to enjoy the double boom. Now that I live in Oregon, closest thing to that sound is some red neck cleaning his gun.

Followed closely by sirens, no doubt, as the redneck will have shot himself in the leg or some such. I used to live in Arkansas, so I know very well the sounds of rednecks cleaning guns.
