No mention if he shares bathroom facilities or not.

Otherwise, the worst part of the deal would be changing his litterbox.

"The thrifty, extreme makeover cost him $64 using recycled parts. Santos lost his architect job in January and now is a waiter (and a mini miracle worker)."

That sucks.

He went from being an architect to living in a closet. And he has a somewhat chipper mood about this.

No doubt. I'd also wager the closet is attached to a house with air conditioning and a clean bathroom...two other things my dorm room lacked.

Amateur. On of my fraternity brothers rented the closet space under a staircase in a 1000 square feet apt. It was 3' x 8' with a slanting ceiling.

To his credit, the guy always had enough money to buy beer and it was amazing how many women he talked into going home with him. He managed to turn living in a closet into a selling point.

They should've included the average rent costs in Florida... cause in Pennsylvania, $150 more and 1 roommate will get you a 2-bedroom apartment with kitchen.

In the Iraq and the Africa, that will get you a mansion.

The room itself is 5 1/2 by 14 feet - or just large enough to squeeze in an Oompa Loompa, but not big enough to fit Shaq's foot or Yao Ming's head. Santos can spread his arms and touch both walls.

Is this supposed to be an attempt at comedy? I give it a Fail +

Yes, that's real farking obscure. So is the reference to Oompa Loompa's in the article. I mean, where do those come from? Oh, Mickey Mouse is obscure, too!

I lived in a 300 square foot apartment for 10 years, 3 of which were with my wife! It cost $450 per month.

Now, we've lived in a 4000 square foot home, which we've lived in for the past 7 years. We regularly discuss how we miss the old apartment but not the old neighbors.

LoneVVolf 2009-05-24 10:49:11 AM
That's just about the same size as my first dorm room, and those contained two students each... Also about the size of a midrange RV living space. It's small, but newsworthy?

BodaciousTease 2009-05-24 10:49:51 AM
Yeah, I had one of those dorm rooms too--so narrow you can only put the bed lengthwise in it, the bed is too long to go crosswise.

Worst was, they charged an arm and leg extra for an old closet with no heat and an air conditioner that leaked into the room.

Oh well, it was worth it not to have to put up with a crazy roommate.

That sounds like a pretty damn big closet if you can fit an office, tv, kitchen, bed, etc.

Why no pics of it.

Fizpez [TotalFark] 2009-05-24 11:27:30 AM
Assuming it had 8 foot ceilings you can make 67 square feet pretty comfy if its just you - probably not much smaller than 1/2 of a typical two person dorm room.

Get the bed up off the floor, couch underneath, desk, minifridge under 1/2 of the desk - and a 32" flat screen TV looks like a big screen from anywhere in the room :)

Seriously though - my wife likes to watch House Hunters International - I'm constantly amazed what 400 square feet goes for in a city like Paris or Tokyo - and if your willing to splurge and spend $800,000+ you can even have a bathroom where the toilet isnt in the shower.

Fooshards 2009-05-24 11:28:23 AM
5.5 by 14 feet is 3 square feet smaller than my dorm room.

And I lived there with TWO people.

in my old apartment we had a closet room under the stairs, we called it the harry potter room, a guy actually wanted to live there and pay us 80 bucks a month, but the landlord wouldnt allow it.

Useless without pics.

That's exactly twice the width of my bedroom closets, and it would actually be pretty livable. The only thing I can see sucking about that is that the bed has to be on the long wall. Depending on door placement, and whether it's a sliding door, the bed could be a real pain in the ass.

FTFA: In order to be able to afford to eat, Santos, who lives in Delray Beach, negotiated with a man to rent out his closet. We won't repeat it again and yes, you read it right. Santos rents the closet for $150 a month, which is a steal, he told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

I couldn't get past the retarded attempt at being clever in the first paragraph.

Geez, this guy must be living *at* the beach for that to be a steal; Del Ray is bad, but I didn't think it was that bad. Kudos to him for the creativity, but I'm not so sure about his TV.

My first studio apartment was $200 a month and about 450 square feet, and the same unit now goes for about $400. Not too shabby all things considered. I understand the need to live cheap while unemployed, but if this guy is a half-way decent architect, he should be able to find work in any number of design related fields somewhere. Delray is nice, but there's a lot better to be found just 100 miles south or north of there.

Con_Authority: I lived in a 300 square foot apartment for 10 years, 3 of which were with my wife!

Geez dude, HOW? I'm not exactly materialistic, but you have to have room for some stuff, unless you live an absolute minimalistic existence. My wife's wardrobe alone takes up most of the closet, and I don't fault her for that. Women need space. I *tried* to live in a 650 sq. ft. apartment for the past three years, and hated every minute of it. There was never enough room in the kitchen, the dining area turned into de-facto storage, we had to get rid of our couch, and the bikes were stored in inconvenient places (I bike a lot.) Our furniture wasn't even that big! I did my very best to live 'vertical', and went out of my way to get creative with shelving and storage, and it was still never good enough.

Now we have a 850+ sq. ft. one bedroom, pay less than the last place ($500), have a nice patio AND washer-dryer hookups, space for everything, a better kitchen, and we aren't constantly breaking toes. I'm happy with that, and we make it work even though my wife really wanted us to have a computer lab/office/library that was separate from the bedroom, but such is life. My only real complaint about living in a shoebox is that you can never have company over to spend the night. At least here we could do a hide-a-bed or king-sized air mattress on the floor if needed.

Sadly, I know of couples *with kids* living in studio apartments, with the kids sleeping on the couch and the parents squeezing into a twin bed.

This guy's idea is awesome if you are a bachelor and planning on staying one for a while; my brother was cramming five room mates into a three bedroom apartment once to save $$, and yes, one of them did live in a closet! I guess when you have nothing, it's a lot easier to be happy with cheap rent and a door.

cryinoutloud [TotalFark] 2009-05-24 02:26:58 PM
Living in that space isn't that bad, assuming that the bathroom and kitchen are elsewhere and you're allowed to use them. But the drawback is in owning things. You can't own anything except the stuff you're using right there.
