stickmangrit: top floor, bottom buzzer

Farking. Love. That. Song.

I thought Morphine were terribly overrated when I first heard them (I was in college, back in the Cure For Pain days). Then something in me clicked, and I think they were genius.

If you have a "real" set of speakers (not 2.1 logi-crap, etc), "Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer" will actually unseat the fillings in your rear teeth. Not sure how low it goes in terms of hz, but it's definitely subterranean. It makes me grin like a bastard whenever my neighbors are away long enough for me to play it. Very underrated album as a whole.

Sweet, sweet Morphine. I played the hell out of this band during my stint as a college radio DJ. Every time we played them the usually quiet phone lines would go nuts.

Okay, seriously, not to sound like the idiot asshole here, but why does this song sound familiar? I had either not heard this group before, or maybe it's been so long since I've heard this that the group is now in obscurity?

i got to discover them live outside on a hot summer day in ottawa

amazing band, wish I could of see them before the guy died.

Their cds never get old and their is something about them that just put so much depth into their music that you just don't hear anymore.

It's called "originality."

Good job subby, I prefer Honey White myself but Morphine had a tremendous sound.

Two bands that I wish I knew about when they were in their prime - Soul Coughing, and the mighty Morphine.

"Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer" - good call!

Sumatra:

thanks for posting that pic so i didnt have to look it up and post it myself. i used to live a couple blocks down from that sign, and i smiled every time i walked passed it to catch the #1 bus.

i never realized the bass had only 2 strings though. what was the point of that?

either way, they rocked....

I dare anyone to show me a more original band and/or sound from the last 20 years. Simply fantastic.

Loved Mark Sandman, The band "Treat Her Right" was the the band he was in prior to Morphine. Then after he left us, the other 2 members went on to form Twinmen

What a killer band. Love that dark, jazzy vibe. Twinemen are also pretty good, but Morphine was the best, IMO.

By the way - If you're a Morphine fan, you might wanna check out the bands "Bourbon Princess" and "AKACOD". Both fronted by the incredible Monique Ortiz. AKACOD is Ortiz, along with Former Morphine saxophonist Dana Colley, and Larry Dersch, who has played with Sandman.

Bourbon Princess is Ortiz, drummer Jerome Deupree (formerly of Morphine), saxophonist Russ Gershon and Jim Moran on piano and guitar. Of the two, Bourbon Princess is probably my favorite.

Nah, last time I tried 'em was 9-9-99. But then I was seated upon my front proch, quaffing a nice Merlot.

/Need to finally get a CD copy of "The Night," mine's on a cassette somewhere.

When Morphine was still around "Buena" would get played on mainstream radio every now and then; that's probably where you heard it.

chelmets 2009-05-25 11:24:19 PM
I always thought their biggest influence was "The Heat is On".

I always go back to "The Night". That song just really gets me.
