How do they know who voted and voted only once?

Seems like wide open to fraud.

well the voted once is easy, but who is actaully entering it, that is harder. on that note though, a lot of places only require a voter registration card to vote. not something hard to get, just put a pin on the card and you make it harder to cheat.

cchris_39: How do they know who voted and voted only once? Seems like wide open to fraud.

FTFA: Before the first day of balloting, voters living in 22 neighborhood board districts with contested races received a passcode that, along with the last four digits of their Social Security number, gave them access to an election Web site created by Everyone Counts.

I suppose if you stole passcodes and SSN's from other people, since they're keyed together--you could commit fraud. But it would be a lot easier to fraudout a mail-ballot election, and both they and Oregon have already been doing those elections for awhile.

Please. There are so many ways to attack that it's not even funny. The simplest solution is to phish or DNS cache poison to get people to enter their passcode on your fraudulent site, and then your automated crawler can run around and vote how you like.

It's muuuuch easier than mail fraud- I wouldn't even have to put on pants!

How about reading TFA
Before the first day of balloting, voters living in 22 neighborhood board districts with contested races received a passcode that, along with the last four digits of their Social Security number, gave them access to an election Web site created by Everyone Counts.

Steele said the computer codes in her firm's system are available for auditing, and that each completed ballot is heavily encrypted, as is the overall system. The process is more secure than that used in Internet banking, she added.

NotARocketScientist: The process is more secure than that used in Internet banking, she added.

Patently false. There's nothing discussed in the article explaining how the site proves to you that it's a legitimate voting site, and not a fake.

musashi1600 2009-05-23 11:55:06 PM
For what it's worth, the only reason most of the people here even know about these elections are because they're being used as a guinea pig to test the idea of online voting; 90% of the people in the City and County of Honolulu don't care about the neighborhood boards, assuming they know they exist.

Hell, election turnout last year (even with local boy Barack Obama running for President) was only 66% among those who registered.

A little fraud is a good way to get those numbers up. It should be like Texas, in the 60s, where 110% of registered voters made it to the polls.

That's what SSL is for. Go ahead and poison my DNS - if you don't walk up the cert chain, you go to hell and you die.

...you're assuming that everyone would actually CHECK those certificates and/or not just click through any warnings from their browser...dubious assumptions.

I find it shockingly ironic that the same people who don't trust electronic voting machines because they don't like the results of an election, the same people who are vehemently against actually having to show ID to vote, are all in favor of: An electronic voting system that requires a special ID to vote.
