That was more depressing than watching Serge and Charlotte Gainsbourg perform "Lemon Incest" in an Eastern Bloc torture getaway for koala bears.

awesome. i wonder when this is - the song was a hit in '69 or so, i think.

That was when it was cool. This was just unfortunate.

1968 to be precise but the guy who posted the vid wrote in the comment: "This record can be from 80's, I think." FAIL

Ah, Rock steady. Much more interesting than reggae, imho and this is a fine example

I've always liked Toots, as well.

i think he rerecorded it with graham parker for stiff records and released it around then. i could be wrong. i agree - the 80s sax solo was crap. i said "awesome," because i love the tune - the original.

Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir,
so that every mouth can be fed.
Poor me, the Israelite. Aah.

Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir,
So that every mouth can be fed.
Poor me, the Israelite. Aah.

My wife and my kids, they are packed up and leave me.
Darling, she said, I was yours to be seen.
Poor me, the Israelite. Aah.

Shirt them a-tear up, trousers are gone.
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde.
Poor me, the Israelite. Aah.

After a storm there must be a calm.
They catch me in the farm. You sound the alarm.
Poor me, the Israelite. Aah.

Poor me, the Israelite.
I wonder who I'm working for.
Poor me, Israelite,
I look a-down and out, sir.

That one guy in front needed to undo at least one more button on his shirt. I saw a depressing lack of overbite as well.

I hear he's doing fine, so don't worry.

As mentioned, the single had a much slower, reggae groove. Never heard this version before, so thanks to subby.

That wasn't too bad. Gotta do what ya gotta do to reach an audience

Always partial to dub myself

Mikey Dread and Scratch Perry FTW (new window)

Ska began in the late 50s in the West Indies, then moved with the immigrants to England which beget the second wave of ska (Specials, Madness, etc). Back home in the Indies, it evolved into reggae. Idiots, however, tend to think ska evolved from reggae and refuse to listen to facts otherwise. These are the same people who refuse to believe the first skinheads were black too...

IMO the history of ska is one of the most fascinating stories in music history...

/Okay, Varg Vikernes might be a bit more interesting...
//Goes to chill out to some Skatalites...

All I keep thinking is "lucky farkers". Bunch of coked up disco yuppies get DESMOND farkING DEKKER and they move around like it's farking Abba or something...

So THAT's what ska is? I've been wondering for years, but even the most accepted definitions leave me vague and uncertain.

Ska is just a hair older than rock. It's a wide genre, and it spawned reggae, dancehall, and a lot more.

varmitydog 2009-05-24 02:24:13 PM
Don't remember the song, and wasn't too impressed by it.

Until I caught my self humming it on the way to church, then again later on it the day. After listening to it once.

Appreciate the link, subby!
