Unless the Maoists win. Then these are pictures of evil and a usurpation of the process, democracy, and freedom.

"Now, last week, France had an election, and people over there approach an election differently. They vote. Eighty-five percent of them turned out. You couldn't get 85% of Americans to get off the couch if there was an election between "Tits" and "Bigger Tits," and they were handing out free samples."

God forbid I actually have to agree with Maher on that one...

Interesting pics, although they could have put "every(wo)man gets paint on finger after voting" in its own damn category. Sheesh.

France is probably one of those weird countries where the differences between the political parties is actually measurable.

You know, unlike the United States, where plenty of us who don't vote understand that the difference is between "I am going to get elected and do horrible things" and "I am going to get elected and do horrible things, yet feign guilt and remorse about them."

*cough* Prolonged detention. *cough*

And we biatch and moan about having to wait twenty minutes in line, or having to hunt five minutes for a parking space at the polling place. Egad.

I particularly like the symbols on the ballot for people who can't read it. We could have had, like, a watermelon and a prune last year! And a nut, for Nader.

I love how turnout in India country where most people don't even have cars, was a far higher percentage than turnout for the 2008 Presidential Election in the United States.

We really are a pathetic country.

It would be wonderful if this many people here in the U.S. cared about or even understood what their government is doing.

And my generation (currently mid 30s) are the worst offenders. I think because things have been both relatively decent and not changing very much at all contribute to the apathy.

Oh well, back to watching Sitcoms and posting on the intarweb.

When your party doesn't win office over in America, you whine about it and move on with your life. When your party doesn't win office in India, you starve. There's more of an incentive to vote.

Has anyone mentioned how low voter turn-out is in the U.S.?

Yeah, its like totally low dude.

And you're also the Bush voters. And the most pro-war. And the most authoritarian all around. Nothing personal. I have sisters in that age group, and they are by far the most politically naive/incompetent people I know.

I'm guessing if that were the scenario, many would not be able to get off the couch, or it would at least be awkward for a while

But you're going to need the candle when there's no power.

Brian_of_Nazareth 2009-05-22 11:28:47 PM
You do realise the simple act of turning out to vote has nothing to do with democracy? I think there should be a requirement to prove at least a vague understanding of at least one issue of importance as a prerequisite for being permitted to vote. I know that would push voting rates down to under 25%, but at least you'd have a better shot at rejecting the morons.

Cheers.

jdproctor 2009-05-22 11:29:13 PM
Tyranny of the majority is still tyranny. Democracy != Freedom. Nothing to see here.

The parties are different. They definitely operate in the same manner (virtual duopoly; whaddya expect), but that doesn't mean they pursue the same goals.

In any case, if we go ahead and presume you are correct in your initial assertion... perhaps, JUST PERHAPS, if more than ~20% of eligible U.S. voters got off their asses and voted in farking primaries... there'd be some differentiation.
