They should just go underground and have secret meetings on campus at night. They could invent a wholly new way of communicating with one another. Like, for example, if one Democrat is walking along and meets someone else who might also be a Democrat, the first one could trace the front half of a donkey into the dust with his foot. Then, if the other person was really a Democrat, he would finish the drawing by tracing the back half of the donkey. Then they could launch a raid on the female dorms and kidnap some young co-eds which they could impregnate in the secret underground bunker, after which they'd perform abortions, release them, and engage in a boisterous round of gay sex.

You're making the assumption that they didn't do those things already.

coco ebert: I smell a lawsuit.

It's a private university, it can sanction or not sanction whatever clubs it wants.

They didn't say you couldn't *be* a democrat on campus, just that you couldn't use Liberty University's name, or hold meetings in the space that they own.

I don't really care, because I naturally assume anyone who goes to one of the JesusSchools is not someone I'd want to deal with on a personal or professional level.

Marcus Aurelius: Translation: We hate black people.

that's a bold faced lie. the "black people hanging club" is one of the school's most popular groups. are you saying it's hateful to hang out with black people?

So, if a student group wanted to hold an "African-American Club" and the university didn't want them to, they could block it?

So long as they aren't tax exempt. Or receive any funding from the government...or issue a state/nationally recognized diploma...or their students are allowed to receive federal/state funding (grants, etc.).

coco ebert: So, if a student group wanted to hold an "African-American Club" and the university didn't want them to, they could block it?

Yes. As long as they aren't discriminating against a protected class, they do not need to go out of their way to cater to them.

Look, the Student Activities Office at any school on has X amount of money and X amount of available meeting spaces and advisers. If you wanted to start a "Pastafarian" student group, there aren't a lot of schools that would officially sanction that.

When students at Boston College wanted to start a Pro-Choice club, the school refused. People were butthurt about it, but that's what happens when you attend a religious based institution.

Liberty University is a diploma mill for Jesus, NOT a well respected research institution.

And BC sucks.

Again, they aren't discriminating against Democrats. They're saying that they won't recognize the organization.

It's like when a particular fraternity gets their charter yanked at a school. You can still be a member of the fraternity, but you don't get recognition or on campus housing.

No, but if you do it right you're exposed to cultures, points of view, and experiences you normally wouldn't have been.

That's not the case at Liberty.

for sure, diversity of viewpoints is one of the cornerstones of a quality education, as far as i'm concerned. that said, if i acted like i did in college in the real world i would have been fired, evicted and probably imprisoned a long time ago.

Well yeah. College is when you figure out exactly where the line is with less repercussions than now.

Of course, I graduated *cough mumble* years ago, before facebook and twitter and myspace and all this shiat. Now, the pictures of your drunken shenanigans and fumbling lesbian experiences last forever, instead of just getting burned when you turn 25.

I'm still not sure they are completely private. They play in Division 1-AA. Doesn't that mean they get some government funding, and therefore are lawsuit liable?

GAT_00: I'm still not sure they are completely private. They play in Division 1-AA. Doesn't that mean they get some government funding, and therefore are lawsuit liable?

I don't know, and I'm too lazy to research it. What I do know is that a lawsuit would be welcomed by Liberty where most would seek to avoid it. Think of it...a lawsuit means an entirely fresh round of, "ZOMG don't you see that we're being persecuted?!!11," and the money pours into the coffers almost on cue. Some would donate wholly on the idea of paying a possible judgment; still others would donate as part a larger ideological war that must be funded.

If I ran any sort of faith-based outfit that reached enough people, that is how I'd run it.

/not claiming that to be the case here...just that it's plausible

I drove around this campus occasionally yelling "Feed the Christians to the Lions!" out the window of the car when a few of us were getting a tour of the campus from a gay Democrat Lynchburg native. It only seemed right.

Heh.... being more familiar with LU than the average person should ever need to be - last I checked students can't have alcohol, cigarettes, or pornography on campus, at risk of getting kicked out. Which begs the question... why would you want to be there at all?
