There's certainly something to be said for minimalism. I can't think of anything more suited to eclipse the 'music' of Stockhausen/Boulez/Babbitt/Crumb/Xenakis, etc. John Adams' "Phrygian Gates" has a kind of Wii-main menu-music feel to it, but minimalism runs the risk of drowning in its own presence, and many can't stomach it.

/then again, try to stomach Stockhausen's "Gesang der Junglinge" or Babbitt's "Philomel"

Glass sucks the Devil's cock.

He just proved that you can make incredible amounts of money by NOT knowing anything about Chord Theory or Form and Analysis.

I hope his prostate falls straight out his asshole.

Vanilla Glass is the most overrated musician in the world, bar none, and gives a bad name to the likes of Brian Eno, Terry Riley, Eric Satie, etc.

Couldn't someone just bang on his fingers with a hammer real good one time, and put a stop to that racket?

Thing is he knows lots about it. He just takes it as a list of things not to do.

Oh and in the 70s he even got a bit of his music on Sesame Street (pops)

I really enjoy Philip Glass's music. Some of the earlier things (contrary Motion, 12 Parts) are challenging to a listener, but I still find them very interesting and enjoyable.

I own a recording of, and can listen to something like Xenakis' Metastasis but I've found that it frightens my pets.

Glass is kind of the "pop music" king of modern classical. His music is very accessible and often pleasant to listen to.

Last year I saw him giving a masterclass - he mostly talked about his life and studies and it was really interesting.

He definitely has a SOLID understanding of form and theory (at the masterclass he talked a lot about his theory training in Paris with Nadia Boulanger), he just doesn't always use them the way "classic" composers do.

Some of his music is overly simple, and a lot of it sounds like he just recycles the same 3 chords (like I said, pop music!), but he does have a few really good pieces too. Though mainly I'm talking about his older stuff off "Glassworks" which has a some good ones.

Had I invested the time in making a post, it would have said this almost verbatim.

Dracula is a favorite of mine.
As is his soundtrack for The Hours.
I'd call both of those things fairly recent.

And I also really like the score for Kundun.

I'm more of a Steve Reich fan, but Glass has some pretty good pieces - I especially like his work on the Candyman soundtrack (of all things). Interesting article, too.

I do find the all the hate amusing, though. It's minimalistic music - you know, subtlety over bombast. It's supposed to create a hypnotic atmosphere and requires listening for the changes in the piece. What else are you expecting?

BTW, nice link rackrent.

You know, I saw that play "Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread" BEFORE I had ever heard anything by Glass.

A year or so later, I heard a piece of his and I started laughing my ass off. That play was the best joke grenade I had ever heard.
