I just wanted to say that Paganfest rocked and Primordial, Korpiklaani, and Moonsorrow are amazing bands live.

Primordial - Heathen Tribes (new window)

I'm glad you made it there. Was everyone in the bands holding up alright? They've had a pretty intense tour schedule and I remember Nemtheanga of Primordial telling me that he was having a hard time keeping his voice healthy.

This is the second time I've heard Primordial (and both times thanks to the Heavy Metal House Call) and I must conclude: They farking rule.

As does Mastodon. Excellent choice, submitter.

That was badass.

SPna15 2009-05-17 05:45:23 PM
Would have preferred Kreator, but what can you do? At least we got one. Anyways, Primordial is awesome, and here are my recs for the week.

Ereb Altor - By Honour: This band is awesome. They sound like an epic doomier version of Hammerheart era Bathory with better vocals. It also features members of Isole, so if you like them, then you should like this. Not much else I can say, as the first line pretty much says everything you need to know about them. LISTEN TO IT.

Demolition Hammer - Epidemic of Violence: Death/Thrash. Epidemic of Violence is one of my favorite albums. It has fast, excellent riffage combined with some awesome solos. It is mostly a thrash album, but it does have that extra bit of death metal aggression to make it great.

Metal Church - Self-Titled: I have mentioned these guys before, but never with any elaboration. They play thrash with hints of power metal thrown in. The Self-Titled debut is one of the best albums I have ever heard. Just listen to the opening song Beyond the Black and try not to headbang. Go on, I'll wait................. You couldn't do it could you? And Gods of Wrath is a strong contender for greatest song ever made by anyone in any music genre (This is not up for debate. It is a fact). In summation: GET. THIS. ALBUM.

Everyone performed perfectly, if anyone was having troubles it didn't show. Nemtheanga has an amazing voice.

Wow. You're a douchebag.

I am, however, pretty happy for the people who got their free tickets, made the road trip to NYC, laughed, had fun, and got to see Mastodon for free.

Oh wait--they're so, like, dangerous that normal people, like, wet themselves and stuff maaaaaaan.

loser_death_spiral 2009-05-17 06:06:00 PM
I like the new Mastodon, but I still think half of them were better as Lethargy.

And for some other interesting stuff:

Adorned Brood - Black Beasts: best song of theirs by far. Somewhat traditional folk/metal but the female vocals really make it special. Too bad the rest of the album isn't this good.

Spiral Architect - Fountainhead (demo version): prog/tech metal classic with the singer from Twisted Into Form. I loved this demo when it came out, but their album was a letdown to me. I prefer this singer's voice and the more original songwriting here.

Sikth - Peep Show: I'm not sure how to classify these guys. Somewhere between rock and modern metal, I suppose. Diverse and melodic and somewhat hit-or-miss, though this song is great. Reminds me of Cinderella (in a good way). I have no idea what the video is about though...

groverXIII 2009-05-17 06:06:09 PM
I gotta admit, the vocals sound like crap in that video. I was kinda disappointed with that. And I like Divinations better, song-wise.

Anyway, a few things I've been listening to this week:

Dream Theater - A Rite Of Passage: I rather like this song, although I've been listening to the full-length version. I mean, it's Dream Theater... say no more.

Ruoska - Amortem: Kinda similar to Rammstein, except that they're Finnish. Industrial metal.

Psycroptic - The Sceptre Of Ancients: Technical death metal. Not for those who dislike death metal vocals.

mandingueiro 2009-05-17 06:07:15 PM

The album is queued up on my Foobar at home... I haven't gotten to it yet due to a trememndous backlog of stuff.

I'll have to give this a listen. I rather liked the album.

I would never really classify SikTh as rock, myself... they were usually pretty chaotic. That's a really mellow song for them. I always preferred Bland Street Bloom, myself. Awesome song, and better shows their style.

terrible quality (recording wise) and not "album perfect" by any means, but tempesta carries that song and i imagine paul's band felt the ringing for a while...

I didn't really see him on stage until Dave shook his hand. Maybe he needs a tattoo that goes onto his forehead. The cameras seemed to be intrigued by that.

Why do I have a feeling we'll hear about someone in Mastadon frying the absolute crap out of their brain with acid one of these days? They're like the entire 70s rock genre in a single metal band.

Saw Mastodon in Chicago @ the Rockstar Mayhem Tour and they were terrible. Granted they were the first band on the main stage behind Dragon Force, hometown Disturbed and Slipknot but they were really terrible live. Jegermister and Second stage killed throughout the day though!

Could've been the move to a larger venue. I saw them live at the Warfield (rather small place) and was absolutely blown the fark away. One of the best performances I've seen in a good while. The same thing happened with Lamb of God, though. Saw them in a small venue, they amazed me, saw them on the main stage at Ozzfest and it just didn't capture the same kind of energy at all.

Necrosis 2009-05-17 07:28:46 PM
After hearing so many good things about the new Mastodon album, I finally picked it up yesterday. I'm quite happy to find that it lives up to the hype and is thoroughly awesome, I've listed to it at least four times since I got home with it last night.

Too bad I missed them coming through my town a few weeks ago, but I'm seeing Gojira tomorrow night and Isis in June.

\m/!

watching that, I had a vision of Paul Schaffer hiding under his keyboard crying like a lil' sissy boy.

Their new album is getting rave reviews, even MA has it sitting at a 97% with 8 reviews. That's still not enough for me to be interested in it though. I've heard their other material and it was all very "meh" to me aside from some songs on Leviathan.

Last year:

Mastodon - can't see what their appeal is
Dragonforce - Woo hoo Power Ranger metal...LOL
Disturbed - every song sounds the same staccattoed de-li-very chacka-chacka
Slipknot- probably would have been intense, albeit boring after more than a half hour

Machine Head - hmm which era of metal they trendhopped onto are they going to play?
Airborne - who?
Five Finger Death Punch - generic radio metalcore
Walls of Jericho - again...who?

Underoath - once again...who?
Black Tide - they're young and that's all I know
Suicide Silence - get off
36 Crazy Fists - my lawn
The Red Chord - not too familiar, but sound pretty heavyish

.....and then there's THIS YEAR:

SLLLLLLLLAAAAAAYYYYYEEERRRRR - did I say Slipknot would have been intense? Strike that.
Marilyn Manson - hey, I am bringing my ol' lady after all
Killswitch Engage - At least we get the real sound behind Five Finger Death Punch this time
Bullet For My Valentine - tweencore though not too bad and fun to play

Trivium - BOAT! RUDDER!
All That Remains - stick to a Fall of Ideals setlist, guys.
God Forbid - that I have to hear this band perform
and some local band

and then

CANNIBAL CORPSE - I just came blood
BEHEMOTH - and got farked with a knife
Whitechapel - ooh blasty blasty, me likey likey
Job For a Cowboy - yet another band that goes through snare heads
Black Dahlia Murder - beer guts and blast beats!

So yeah, this year has bona fide death metal, deathcore, and proto-death, and last year had Disturbed and Dragonfarce. I'm GLAD it doesn't stand close.

Caught Mastodon last Tuesday. It was a damned fine show, but I found my self chomping at the bit for the older stuff. The new album is pretty good, but I loved the vocals on the earlier works - especially when performed live.

/cookie monster FTW!!
//I really wanted the chick playing for Kylesa to walk up to the mike after a song and speak with a squeaky, little-girl voice after doing the CM thing for a whole song.

You are out of your mind.

We got Fen's debut album, which is full of Agallochy goodness.
There's Absu, Candlemass, Austere, Altar of Plague, Heaven & Hell, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Hibria, Warbringer, and many others that I can't name of the top of my head.

This isn't even counting the upcoming stuff from Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Immortal, Wintersun, Slayer, Atheist, Ceremonial Castings, Augury, etc.

Fen I haven't heard, but they sound interesting. Austere, Altar of Plague, Hibria, and Warbringer I don't know anything about. Absu, Candlemass, Heaven & Hell, and Fleshgod Apocalypse == meh. Of the upcoming ones you mentioned, only Atheist, Augury and Ceremonial Castings interest me in the slightest. Now, if we get new albums from Decrepit Birth, Necrophagist, Sickening Horror, Gorguts, and Serdce, I'd start to be interested. And this teaser from Spawn of Possession sounds pretty good too. Let's hope they get an album out in 2009 (they're about halfway done).

As for bad year for metal goes, I'd sy this year has been the best year for chick-fronted metal bands, namely Luna Mortis and the Agonist. Alyssa White-Gluz has taken the crown for hottest metal chick from Christina Scabbia, considering Lacuna Coil forfeited and everything.

And then upcoming stuff by Dream Theater, Amorphis, hopefully Powerglove, and MOTHER FARKING CLUTCH.

So, yeah. Pretty decent year for music.

That Clutch album is going to be my album of the year... I can feel it.

loser_death_spiral: Fen I haven't heard, but they sound interesting. Austere, Altar of Plague, Hibria, and Warbringer

Austere (I guess it's more for the people who like black metal in the vein of Amesoeurs. But take my word, this is good.)
Altar of Plagues (Again, more of a black metal thing, but White Tomb is an excellent album with some amazing songwriting.)
Warbringer (Excellent thrash and a great live band)

And all the ones that I listed in my previous post are only the ones that I could remember off the top of my head.
