Graham told the crowd there was nothing wrong with any conservative, and he wanted to build an open party that could win in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, as well as South Carolina.

"You're a hypocrite!" one man yelled.

"I'm a winner, pal," Graham shot back. "Winning matters to me. If it doesn't matter to you, there's the exit sign."

FTA: Floyd, who was unopposed, was elected unanimously. She said her 2006 loss running for state Superintendent of Education had motivated her, as well as national Democrats who had her seeing red.

Took me a bit to put 1+1 together to get 2:

Floyd has come out and said quite clearly that she favors the teaching of "intelligent design" (i.e. creationism-lite) and is an ally of the Discovery Institute.

yeah. part of me wishes for a moderate, inclusive GOP... but after the shiat they've pulled since '94, i'm going to enjoy a whole lot of schadenfreude for a while.

JohnnyC 2009-05-17 06:26:26 PM
A part of me wants to tell you GOP'ers that I feel sorry for ya... but the fact is, I don't. Just pull yourselves up by your bootstraps.

I'll vote for a Republican when I can find one who isn't a liar, a hypocrite, a shill for the church, and places more importance on America and its people than their political party.

In other words... I don't think I'll ever be voting Republican again.

/still an independent
//will probably vote for 3rd parties for lesser positions since they occasionally have a chance in those.

FTFA: But U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, who followed Graham, said he'd rather have 30 senators who stand on principle than 60 who have none.

The way the Republicans are going, in a couple years they're going to have no senators.

Okay, that made me lol.

Cathedralmaster 2009-05-17 06:48:34 PM
To a degree, they've really made their own bed with this. They've been selling crap they don't actually believe in for years to their constituents in the interests of getting elected, and selling it zealously. They've done such a good job with it in fact that their constituents have come to be true believers in their message. And now that they need to change that message to win, every tactic they've used to win that loyalty is being turned against them by their very own party.

The monster they've built to fight for them is so perfect, not even they can conquer it. And now it's set to destroy them.

The GOP has really sunk to a new low when Lindsey Graham is now the voice of reason and moderation in that party.

It does show that the supposed ideologues in the GOP who hold office are nothing more than hypocrites; they've been playing the real hardliners for fools for the last ten-plus years but now they have to put up or shut up.

This is pretty much the same fight most state GOPs are having right now. We're dealing with the same thing in Virginia, although not on this scale.

WhileAmericaBurns 2009-05-17 07:45:38 PM
The Republican Party needs to jettison its religious faction and truly become the party of capitalism, as opposed to the party that only pays lip service to "free markets" and will only stand up for values that are "traditional" as it has been for decades and decades. If they think the only route in this political climate is to compromise with Democrats, then they might as well all switch parties and truly make this a one-party state. If they think the only stances worth defending absolutely are their anti-freedom and anti-liberty stances on gay marriage and abortion, then they might as well get out of politics.

I'm not sure what you're referring to with that last item. If you're referring to the massive bailouts of industry, I agree that was one of the worst things the Republicans participated in in the last eight years. (But of course, Democrats participated as well, and continue to do so on the same scale.)

If you're referring to the so-called "tax cuts for the wealthy", you may feel that they are wrong or ineffective, but you're being dishonest if you're suggesting that such cuts came "at the expense of the rest of us". The rich pay the most into the system, ergo they get the most back when rates are cut. It's their money, not yours or mine. One may say that the tax cuts were not appropriate, but to claim that they resulted in money being transferred from the less wealthy to the more is simply not correct.

SilentStrider: sounds like a microcosm of republicans in general.

This. Very much this.
I suspect other established or recently turned 'Red' states will mirror this, with potentially a few exceptions.

Terrified Asexual Forcemeat 2009-05-17 08:01:34 PM
The Republican Party is and has been the party of Failing Upwards. They screw everything up and then look like heroes for saving us from their screw-ups. I've heard others call them the party of "doubling down" and it's pretty much the same.

The problem now is that they can't fail any harder. But it's important to try...
