Some farker a few weeks ago posted something to the effect of "The greatest generation were truly great, but they were shiatty parents." I agree.

My mom is a baby boomer (born in '51) and even she says that her generation has farked everything up.

I guess it depends on the background. Between my wife and I, our kids have a Mima (pronunced Mee-mah), a Mima (pronounced Mi-muh), a Mawmaw, a Mimi, and a Memere. Grandma would actually be a welcome and less confusing addition here.

While I hope it's a quite few years before I become a grandmother (I'm only 39), when it does happen, I'll be proud to have my grandchildren call me "Grandma".

These are boomers we are talking about here. Taking responsibility for their actions is a completely foreign concept to them.

Saying meemaw and peepaw is the result of genetic abberation that should be removed from the gene pool.

Had a person actually say in a discussion group back in college "as my peepaw says..." and I wanted to put a bullet through his brain.

No, it's just a southern thing. Some boomer grandparents are opting out of "grandma or pa" because they have parents still alive, and it causes a bunch of confusion. Some opt for the ethnic thing (like the Polish "busia").

//and some Polish aunties opt for ciocia.

pwn3d781 2009-05-17 07:44:45 PM
I think it's more a factor of simplicity. My dad's parents were Grammy and Grandpa. My mom's parents were/are Memère and Pepère. Seeing as the French-Canadian blood runs deep on both sides, I'm not sure why we picked one over the other to use the French names, but it worked better than Grammy and Grandpa (insert last name here).

One of my co-workers has an interesting one. She and her husband (who are in their early 50s) went by Grandma and Grandpa, but one day their grandson overheard her husband call her "honey," and so he started calling her "Honey" or "Grandma Honey." She goes along with it because it's cute, and besides, she doesn't look like a grandmother yet anyway. (Though it made me realize, when I was hatched, my grandmother was only 50 or so, too. Some things, you just don't think about.)

Nakito 2009-05-17 07:44:56 PM
The real warfare isn't between generations. It's between the creative, productive subset of each generation and the dead weight of each generation.

It's the dead weight that thinks in terms of inter-generational warfare. The creative, productive subset recognizes its own kind in every generation.

This is the truth. The more it offends you, the stronger the proof of it.

It's not just boomers. I'm 40 and most of the women my age are far more concerned with being "MILF's" than they are about their families.

/sad, really

Music snobbery transcends generations. Sadly it doesn't bring anyone closer, just increases the cacophony of douchebaggery.

What's the difference between a baby boomer and an whipper snapper? One's a baby boomer and the other's a fish!

Wait, lemme try again:

How many baby boomers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None, they usually have a young kid to do that these days.

Aw geez, one more shot:

What do you call baby boomers with your last name? Mom and Dad.

Tired, tired, tired discussion. Why do so many have to fall for it?

Every generation thinks the ones directly in front of and behind it are "self-absorbed losers." I suppose I'm the only one that has noticed this.

Intergenerational pissing contests: boring and lame since the dawn of civilization.

My baby boomer parents were organic gardening, recycling, composting, cloth diapering, laundry line using, wood chopping, chicken farming, bread baking, alternative energy freaks since back in the 70's. Never censored our television watching either. They're like the Anti-Greediest Generation. They're the parents the other kids liked.

Come to think of it, I should probably amend that to "failed as a human being" in this scenario. How the hell do you manage to have a teenager of childbearing age by 29?

Excuse me, Mr. Morality, but my mother was a grandma in her 40s. She got married young, had a child at 22, and my sis got married at 20 and had her first child within a year. Nobody failed here; everybody had their children in a stable, two parent home. We just don't get married at the bourgeois-approved age of 25 1/2. Is that a problem?
