Having a bad day.

Yes, I always hate being left out of a tax increase.

Change it to "wine and liquor producers paid to make sure the beer barons were punished too"

Given that the tax appears to be a flat tax per six-pack, not a percentage, and that it hasn't been raised in a decade, this may not be that absurd...

And it's not like this is going to break the bank no matter how much you drink. We're talking about an increase of less than a half cent on a can of beer.

Well, they taxed cigarettes then banned them from public places. Are they going to ban beer too? like, in a bar?

Good point. They're probably going to ban income, too. It's a slippery slope.

Indeed. I can get a 12 pack of it for about $10.50 around here, about 20 miles east of St. Louis. It tastes good too, but you can't beat that price for anything other than bottled piss.

What the hell is with the government's sense of entitlement, when it comes to taxes?

Every one of those products were taxed several times, with those taxes being passed down to us, long before they reached the shelves.

This tax is to pay for "a construction project"?

What construction project? Did the tax payers get to vote on whether they wanted to pay for this mystery construction project via higher taxes?

Yeah, and only a few slight increases in DMV fees, isn't going to break the bank either. I mean hey, you can afford a car. A slight increase in real estate taxes is OK, because, hey, you can afford a house. A slight increase on bus fares because, hey, it's cheaper than having a car, and they haven't raised it in a few years.

It's beginning to snowball, and attitudes like yours, my bamboo eating friend, are a major part of the problem.

mochunk 2009-05-17 04:52:45 PM
I'd like to see the exact wording on this. Stating 2.6 cents per six-pack is a little vague. Being an Illinois resident who frequently purchases beer in many many various levels of packing well below or above 'six-packs'. 22oz, 4-12oz packs, 750ml, 16oz singles etc... What about 6-16oz packs?

I really hope they are actually doing this by stated liquid volume. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense. Maybe I'm reading way too much into this, I need a beer.

Not directly responsible, but, just for the sake of argument, wouldn't he be considered a leader of the Illinois Democrats, at least until a couple months ago. This is the type of culture his attitude nurtures.

Come on, people. 2.6 cents on an item that costs between $4 and $10.

And, it's a luxury item. I'd rather that, than gas, or income, or whatever.

First they came for the luxury items and I said nothing because I was a poor and worthless peon...

JackieRabbit 2009-05-17 05:33:28 PM
As someone who has lived through four major recessions now I can tell you that whenever the economy tanks and governments look for ways to raise revenues, they always resort to sin taxes. One one is going to make too much noise about having their booze or tobacco taxes raise. Governments know this. Now, raise automobile ad valorum taxes by five bucks a year and you'll have a riot on your hands. So it's better to let the drunks and "filthy smokers" take up the slack, as the cost of being politically incorrect.

If I buy $10K of stuff and pay $700 in taxes, then 10 years later spend $20K for the same amount of stuff (thanks to inflation) and pay $1400 in taxes, I don't complain the government is raising taxes. It's the same rate.

In this case, it would be something like buying $10K of stuff and paying $5 in taxes in 1999, but buying $20K of stuff and paying $5 in taxes in 2009. The tax rate has been falling for the past 10 years.

This 'increase' is not a big deal to me as compared to, say, increasing income tax rates.

Non-poor people drink beer, and poor people drink wine and liquor. So the "poor" comment is out of line.

As for taxing it more... they're gonna get us no matter what. The alternative would be gasp cutting government at least as much as gov't income has dropped (most local and state governments relied too much on real estate taxes, so they're farked due to the housing crisis).

The Dems are in power: the tax and spend party. Remember?

It seems that many of you need a refresher course on slippery slope. It is called a fallacy for a reason.

I don't want them to tax my booze, but I do have to admit that booze is a luxury, and therefore more subject to taxation.
