Actually kind of difficult to judge here.

The locals in the Niger Delta have noted that the government got billions for the Delta oil, but just about nothing comes back to the Delta region. They are a somewhat separate people and apparently not thought of too highly by the Nigerian govt. From this perspective, the Niger govt is pillaging the region. Some outsiders have viewed this as "stolen" crude.

The government maintains it's a national resource and just because you guys were born near the oil deposit doesn't mean you are entitled to money from it. From that perspective, they're just local yokel insurgents where some thugs saw $ and decided to commandeer the resources for themselves.

Actually I had a freshman writing class that had a pretty lengthy debate over this. At the time POC - Person of Color was to be the politically correct terminology, due to the African American linguistic problems. Well, a student made the mistake of using "Colored Person" in her writing, which was the throwback to Jim Crow era. So the mid 20's politically correct female teacher wasn't really sure whether it should be Person of Color or go back to African American. After a few minutes the class's only black person said "Black is really just fine, no really". It was pretty humorous.

I hate to be the cold bucket of water on this one but I am actually on the Chevron project that had this happen. They think that they are proving a point by hitting one of the lines (it was a natural gas one by the way, NOT a petroleum one) but all it did was make us flare the excess out. Also doesn't help that we employ all of these moran's brothers and sisters on this project, so I really do not see how this benefits anyone.
