It's always kind of pissed me off how people treat historic sites like crap (trash everywhere, etc.). Especially when Greek or Roman ruins are involved. I would kill to have the money to be able to go see those again sometime. Especially Taormina.

No wonder Singapore bans all chewing gum.

Good, there should be something done to prevent further damage on these sites. I think it's soooo cool that they use these sites for modern uses, but visitors should be careful.

Her boyfriend is that guy who gets a woman pregnant every 4 minutes.

We've got to find this couple and stop them.

Actually, sometimes the everyman appreciates them more. I don't know how many people I've come into contact with throughout my varied work life that love history and would love to see these sites. I'm talking construction workers, mailroom guys, waiters...

Would not be surprised if it was mostly the bored to death kids doing most of the damage while their parents, who scrimped and saved for this trip, are actually having a blast.

Those shoes are likely worth about the same as one what one would plan to put down on a trip to Greece.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think "high heels" are also banned on most airplanes because of the damage they do to the flooring.

You have to take off your shoes at the Taj Mahal, or wear these silly shoe covers. I preferred to go barefoot on the 140 degree marble. Youch!

brantgoose 2009-05-17 01:12:05 PM
Stilleto heels are a menace to stone, concrete, asphalt, tiles and anything that can't take the pressure of a herd of elephants walking on nail heads. I'm surprised they haven't been banned for a century already. And that they aren't registered as weapons.

A quick Google found this, for you Unscientific Americans:

"What exerts more pressure-per-square inch when walking a 100 lb woman in high heels or a 6,000 lb elephant in bare feet? [At the moment when only the heel rests on the ground.] ... (Stiletto heels have an area of about 1/16 of a square inch. Elephants, unlike humans, walk with two feet on the ground at a time. Each foot is about 40 square inches. Thus, the woman "wins" by far more than 1,500 psi versus 75 psi.)"

And here it is in metric for you Scientific Americans:

"65kg on a surface of 2 cm2 (e.g., high heel shoes) will result in a pressure of 3 250 000 Pa (beneath the high heels, if the person is standing on the surface of planet Earth). A four ton elephant, on the other hand, standing on one foot will cause a pressure of only 250 000 Pa under that foot."

http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2003/JackGreen.shtml

God help us when fat women insist on wearing high heels. The most petite gal(50 kg is approximately 110 pounds) is a menace in heels.

Here finally, from the same handy site, is a comparison between a man walking on heeled shoes and a woman in high heels:

"Humans will only have one foot on the ground while walking. Estimate that the area of the heel on a man's shoe is 10 in2. When he walks, a 200 lb. man exerts 20 psi because the weight is supported momentarily by the heel. A 100 lb. woman exerts many more psi when she wears heels. Depending on the area of the heel, she can exert as much as 1600 psi under a 'stiletto heel' ¼ inch on a side. This explains why people with wood floors don't want women walking on them in high heels."

WildMonkey 2009-05-17 01:13:47 PM
only women would make a farking fuss over not being able to wear something. oh no, now they'll have to wear shoes that doesn't exaggerate their height.

British 2009-05-17 01:14:26 PM

Staging plays and musical performances in ancient theatres is one way to help people connect to and appreciate history in a very visceral way. Measures like these are important so that the sites can continue to be used and allow access to as many people as possible.

Joe Hallenbeck: Actually, sometimes the everyman appreciates them more. I don't know how many people I've come into contact with throughout my varied work life that love history and would love to see these sites. I'm talking construction workers, mailroom guys, waiters...

In fact, it's true. There is interest from all walks of life. I try and make reaching out to 'the public' a priority; it's one thing to be caught up in the minutiae of ones' academic research, but what purpose does it serve if you don't share it with everyone who is interested? If people can't visit the sites, I do my best to bring the sites to them.

/interesting factoid, the toilets at Epidauros have a sign in the stalls asking you to flush the toilet paper (because usually you can't in Greece).

Looking good is fine, but heels? As long as you don't dress like a slob you're fine. Jeans that fit and a clean T shirt make you look like a fashion god these days, that's plenty. I just wear what I do everyday- typically dark jeans and a button down shirt, and a nice sweater and jacket when cold.

You don't have to look like you're going to an opera. Besides, think how ridiculous you would look if something broke down and you had to walk across the tarmac after your plane broke down on the runway.

Aulus [TotalFark] 2009-05-17 01:16:27 PM
Not exactly old news, but this has been a concern for some time.

It really does piss me off the way tourists treat ancient sites and museums. Even more that some people get upset with me when I try to correct such behavior.

There is a small museum in the Italian town of Cerveteri, the ancient Etruscan city of Caere. When I was there in 1973, I told a bunch of high school kids to STFU and stop climbing on the sculptures. Their teacher came over and chewed my ass out for daring to criticise his little darlings. I should have pushed the asshole down the stairs.

It's the appreciation of the history of our culture and development as a race. That's why some people get more touchy when monuments and castles or ancient churches get bombed than a village. I said some, not all btw. But in all honesty, there's a reason why before you go into war you form a committee to determine what sites and cultural centers are to be put on the no hit list for the sake of cultural legacy. Of course, we'll not include the last administration in this but ever since WWII this has been a hot button topic.

LinaBo 2009-05-17 01:47:05 PM
Maybe they should build replicas of some sites for the droves of people who all too happily abuse and cheapen the experience, and only allow higher-paying, smaller tour groups with strict rules regarding respect to view the originals. I'm sure that many of the mouth-breathing masses are content with reasonable facsimiles.

What cultural sites did the last administration destroy? I know the one they removed in Afghanistan was quite fond of that.

The National Archaeological Museum in Iraq was vandalized and looted shortly after the conflict started. The US did NOTHING to prevent this from happening and was late to respond to this crisis. My understanding of this is that there are still thousand year old pieces still missing from the museum.
Some pieces were recovered from the black market, but many are still on Interpol's missing list.

In Oxford Street the cleaning crews have to clean up 300,000 pieces of gum *per day*.

I once saw this guy who couldn't get off unless the chick wore heels all day.
I dared him to walk 10 feet in heels. He couldn't make it six feet. I said he couldn't get me off until he would do it. I guess not...

minoridiot 2009-05-17 02:45:06 PM
This isn't a new thing. Way back in the 60's, stilettos were very fashionable. My mother wore her's everywhere, but most historical buildings in France would only allow stilettos if you wore a special heel clip which covered the tip. The clip wasn't big (about .75" square), but it was made out of a soft plastic and was enough to protect the mable floors. I've only seen the heel clips in France, but I've never seen them in this country.

Blah, gum chewing is one of the most disgusting habits out there. Just the thought of chewing gum makes me retch a little. It always disgusts me to no end when someone puts it on the side of their plate when they eat....I'm gagging a little thinking about it.

Tend to think heels make women look disparate, not good. Exceptions for special events, xmass party etc.

Coco LaFemme [TotalFark] 2009-05-17 02:55:46 PM
It's been my experience that the way people treat public property is directly correlated to the way they treat their homes. Case in point, if you go shopping and try on clothes but leave them wadded up on the floor rather than at least hanging them up and leaving them in the fitting room, the chances of your house looking similar are quite high.

If you can't have respect for something that is not yours, you probably don't have respect for something that is.

Most people just piss me off.
