How did they even GET INTO music if getting 4 isn't good enough for them to ever continue again? And isn't the point supposed to be the music, not the recognition...?

They should've stayed quitted the first time.

This. But only because I listened to it way too much. As of today, I could probably still sing the album from start to finish.

Someone once said they are the last band standing... look at Woodstock 94', how many of those bands are still around creating.

Now some are around as reunited bands doing greatest hits, but how many are filling stadiums performing NEW SONGS?

greenday was pretty damn good...yes warning is an understated classic!!!!

on the new album and the american idiot album they are just phoning it in. it's not BAD, but it's just kind of like they decided "oh, this song worked, let's re do it about 20 times and make a bunch of money off 2 albums and their tours"...can't say as i blame them. i understand "selling out" to a point. making money doing something you love, GREAT! but seems like they'd grow bored and want to change it up...oh yeay, they did...FOXBORO HOTTUBS

thank you for that! that was truly a gem...2 of the better bands from my childhood/youth together, and with a brass section!

wow... i heard a few songs off of their new album, and lo-and-behold, it sounds incredibly similar to "american idiot".

their new single is actually rather crappy.

but still they seem like a group of nice/cool guys and they've stuck around for this long / still successful [what other 90's pop/rock/punk band is still around AND successful right now?]
so at least they got that going for them...

I'm about to turn 24 and i can say everyone in my generation owned Dookie. Hell i even had some really early Green Day on cassette. They struggled their whole careers to be seen as punk and they were a decent punk band at one point. Now they've completely given up on themselves and sold out (not a phrase i use a lot). I saw them on SNL last night. They had a studio musician doing most of the guitar work and singing back up. And another guy in the back also singing and the song still sounded generic and lame. Give it up guys, give it up

Look. I don't mean to bag on ya here, but you were 8 or 9 when Dookie came out. If you don't know the whole Green Day/Gilman street story, I'll let you in on a little secret. "Dookie" WAS the "sellout" album. Regardless of intention, when they signed from Lookout! to a major label, there was no turning back.

Third_Uncle_Eno: their new single is actually rather crappy.

I can't believe they went with "Know Your Enemy" as a single, there are so many other better choices.
Try "¡Viva la Gloria!", it's easily my favorite on the new album.
But Warning was still better.

Warning is my favorite Green Day album, and the new one isn't half bad either. Methinks some Farkers take their music far too seriously.

Although to be fair, Green Day has gotten pretty pretentious. Why else would they cover "A Quick One While He's Away?"

The White Stripes didn't release their first album until 1999, and didn't hit it big until White Blood Cells in 2001. Same for Nickelback - they had one album in the '90s, but How You Remind Me was what pushed them into the spotlight in America, in 2001.

i'm thinking you didn't exactly get what i meant... sorry my bad.
i meant pop-rock-punk as what i think of Green Day as, IMHO.
as in that specific band has elements of all of those genres in their sound.

not seperate... [ie. what other pop band, rock band, or punk band.]

but in the way that you interpreted my comment, you are correct.
those bands you listed ARE still popular today, etc.

Debating going to Green Day when they come to Fargo. Love the old tunes, not a fan of the new.

The new album was okay. I still deleted it because I doubt I'll listen to it again. It sounds like American Idiot.

And to whomever mentioned that Green Day is one of the few bands from '94 still around... Yeah, because there aren't any other bands from before '94 still around.

Hell, just in terms of punk bands, I can name Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX, and The Offspring (okay, they haven't made anything remotely decent in a long time, but still). And I'm not making much effort.

Wow.... all those bands you mentioned don't have any of the original members. Bad Religion alone has had over a dozen lineup changes. It's like saying the Beach Boys are still around from the 60's because you saw them at the local county fair...

Green Day is still creating music with the original band members.
They aren't doing greatest hits tours. They can sell out arenas playing only new songs... who else can do that?

dougiezerosag 2009-05-17 08:59:20 PM
One more thing... Kerlunk and that other EP came out as re-releases in 99.9% of the USA. Those came out after Dookie became really popular.

If you run around saying you were into Kerplunk or you liked old-school Green Day, you probably better be from the Berkley area to continue the lie.

You mean they don't have all of their original members? 3 of Bad Religion's 4 founders are in the band. Pennywise had to get a new bassist because their original died. NOFX's current lineup has been together since 1991.

Oh, and Tre isn't Green Day's original drummer. John Kiffmeyer is. (Yes, I had to look that up.)

You do know that the "studio musician doing most of the guitar work" is Jason White who is/was in Pinhead Gunpowder with Billie and was in the "When I come around" video and has toured with them for a pretty long time.

I think a lot of people hate them because they got popular again with 13 year old girls and don't realize they won't keep releasing Dookie over and over again.

Kill your heroes.

Green Day is just fine. A punk band, even a "sellout" pop punk band, which has a successful career like theirs means something. You can argue about that all you want.

Either way...

The only thing more pathetic than emo/goth kids out-poseuring themselves is punkers whining about who is a real punk.

Punk is what YOU want it to be.
