"It's very black, and very urban, and people are scared of that." [emphasis added to depict the inflection]

Damn...there is no way in hell you'd get away with saying that on TV now.

Finally got through both videos. Hugh Downs saying, "It is infectious too," got me laughing.

So what I'm getting from this news story is that rap music was actually invented by a white chick. And all this time the darkies have claimed credit for it.

This might be the scandal of the last century!

Hey, prior to the Sugar Hill gang, no one outside of the inner cities had heard anything like it.

It was wonderful back when I had a blue high-top version of these.

There's an hilarious one out there somewhere on youtube from my local station about grunge, and how we were the "next Seattle."

Judging from the haircuts (and how young they look), I'd say 1993 at the latest.

NYCNative 2009-05-16 08:50:52 PM
That was awesome. As someone who was ten years old living in Hollis, Queens when "Rapper's Delight" came out, this brought back a lot of memories (so I got a kick out of it...)

Ahh before gangsta rap it was great back then, I guess. And hmmmm they sell music in places where there are no black people just white people like Poland, South America, and Europe. Ummmm South America is just white people? And when did Poland become a separate entity then Europe? As far as I know Poland is part of Europe.

I was expecting a moron-white-guy report and that was actually pretty well done. Kudos 20/20 in 1981. I'd like to see Andy Rooney's response to that.

I can't believe I read that whole damn thing. And at the end I can't even tell if it's serious or not. KRS-1 throwing PM Dawn off the stage and breaking into one of his songs -- a song that borrows from Billy freaking Joel of all people! -- is the root cause of thuggish behavior in rap? Because that amuses me.

It's actually an interesting story but it's sorta gone forgotten. Prince Be stated in an interview that "KRS-One wants to be a teacher, but a teacher of what?" and that somehow turned into some sort of battle which you pretty much just read.

I was already well into techno at the point, and I pretty much stopped listening to rap completely after that scuffle.

3...2...1...BREAK.

ToeNipples: "Not everyone can sing, but ANYONE can rap." I thought that was the best part.

Because of how untrue it is.

Anyone can TRY to rap...anyone can EMBARASS themselves by trying to rap...

But not everyone can rap.

I DNRTFA but I blame Master P and his crew for ruining rap/hip hop...

At one point there was a message beyond biatches,$, grills, escalades. Even today people like Common have a great flow and positive lyrics. The dirty south(Outkast ATLiens was classic, after Aquemini they bought in also)kinda blew it for legit hip hop artists. I love some late 90s Twista, Do or Die, Nas, some Wu Tang. But there were way too many artists mailing it in....much like the current rock scene. Don't get me wrong I love a lot of random bands out there...it just seems like there is a lot of 'artists' mailing it in now.

zunkus: I DNRTFA but I blame Master P and his crew for ruining rap/hip hop...

They certainly lowered the bar. However, they did sell a lot of albums. I'd love to go around blaming certain artists or producers all day, but the fact is that the real blame lies with the people who bought that shiat.

Mad Mark 2009-05-17 09:19:19 AM
I still remember years ago when David Lettermen had Ray Charles on his show. Dave, being his smartass self asked Ray "What about rap? Do you like rap music Ray?" To which Ray responds, "I don't consider rap music. But if that's what you like whatever."

1000 bonus points for including Joe Strummer. Rap is likely to influence popular music for years to come. Rock on. Don't stop. Farkin classico.

Just a couple of weeks ago I had to explain to a middle aged white woman that, no, Blondie didn't "invent" rap.

And she didn't do it very well.

Funny, the way white people dance today that elicits so much ridicule is pretty close to how blacks were dancing in the early 80s.
