That's pretty much what Ron Paul said. Got to give him credit - that was a good call ;)

I'm glad The House is addressing serious business instead of pointless busy work.

yeah, but because Ron Paul said it, everyone on fark will ignore it. never mind that he's right - the average left leaning farker would rather tear out their own eyeballs and eat them with chopsticks than admit to agreeing with the man.

Never mind that everyone in this thread agrees...but other than that, yeah, it'll be totally ignored.

I must be below average for a left-leaning farker, because I think he makes a good point.

Of course it's a rather silly thing to object to, but at least his symbolic gesture is in keeping with his principles.

Where I might have to disagree with him is this:

The cost of the medal and the replicas is about $30,000. The cost of the salaries of the congresspeople, their support staff, the electricity and so forth that are used while they stand around debating the issue probably all sum to more than 30K.

Again, it's a reasonable symbolic gesture for Paul to take a stand, but I wonder if the time he spent debating it didn't actually cost the taxpayers more than the medal itself.

(Especially since sales of the replicas are expected to at least cover the cost of the medal itself.)

But if you want to split hairs then I revise my statement to read '...most of fark...'

there. happy now?

Well, it's nice he keeps his policy of not being involved in pointless votes and excessive spending if he didn't drop $400 million in earmarks. He's no different than the rest of them, he just only pretends to be when it doesn't matter or he can put his name in the news by being the only 'No' vote.

House of Tards [TotalFark] 2009-05-16 02:32:03 PM
The upside of congress spending time on stupid resolutions like this is that it takes time away from doing anything actually harmful.

I am a left leaning farker and I agree with him.

But I also like the idea of honouring people who make a significant, positive contribution to society.

/surely Congressmen of all people can come up with a way to make this a LUCRATIVE opportunity? Sort of like an investment for taxpayers. Award the medal in front of an 'exclusive' audience, charging $500 a ticket. If you can't exploit the awarding of a congressional medal to a famous golfer and turn it into a financial windfall, you fail at the game of capitalism.

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2009-05-16 04:48:07 PM
Yes God forbid someone in congress sticks to their principals no matter how bad it can be spun.

He has a bill before congress about legalizing hemp. He was on some new program the other day with a very well reasoned argument about us importing it from other countries and it could make up for the loss farmers are experiencing from the decrease in tobacco use.

It'll never pass because it'll be too easy for opponents to have campaign adds about being soft on drugs. SHE/HE VOTED TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA!!

I'll bet that most of the people that comment here will agree with Paul. I'm as left as they come and I agree with a number of things he's said. Don't let that stand in the way of your sweeping generalizations though.

I would say kudos to Ron Paul, but he votes with such stupidity, and he's voted yes to waste more tax money than any other house member. He's an attention whore like the other "McMaverick".

This comment from the yahoo page is too funny not to post here:

"Just another political hack. How good can you be in your party when Limbaugh thinks you are a whack job?"

In my book, Rush Limbaugh thinking Ron Paul is a whackjob moves Ron Paul UP several notches.

You gotta love the right wingers, using Limbaugh as a guide post.

You gotta love the Weaver95 persecution complex.

I am left leaning, and I agree with Ron Paul on several issues. Have said so many times. I think he is bat-shiat crazy on many issues as well. Such is being a politician.

It is only in YOUR simple little mind that *no one will ever agree with Ron Paul!!!", because that is how you need it to be, in order to continue to treat people like non-humans.

Congratulations on further demonstrating your limitations.

No. I used to agree with him and think he was great. Because I believed the internet hype. Then I read his older opinions on abortion and religion and government.

He's right now this, and on a fair few other things, but he'd be a terrible president. He's far, far, FAR beyond "reasonable" libertarianism.
