cfish78: they would sell baby blood of there was a buyer.

They would sell their own baby's blood if it screwed Ethiopia in the process.

Argh2: WTF. I have no idea what the different sides are even fighting about here. shiat, if I lived in Somalia, the only thing I'd be fighting for is a way out.

There are 3 major players in the African Horn, and they represent a microcosm of Cold War conflict....

Or even some pre-Napolianic shiat if you dig history. In this allegory; Entrea is like Prussia, Ethiopia is like Poland and Somalia is like parts of the Ottoman empire that the Ottomans couldn't control.

1. Entrea: There are no ethnic Entreans, they created their nation by existing as a bunch of expat Ethiopians and they are tough as farking nails. Tall people who are extremly well trained. Formerly, they were Soviet backed and they are the masters of modern day trench warfare. (yes, trench warfare still exists). They are stuck in WWI but they have equipment from the late 70's.

2. Ethiopia: This is our (America's) dick in the Horn. They have elections, but presidents now-a-days tend to be American and Christian, despite the people who actually live there really are.

3. Somalia: Hell on earth, but my favorite country in the whole wide world. They used to have a fascist dictator names Siad Barre, who even used to rock a Hitler stache. After him came a bunch of brutal warlord-types, similar to those we saw in Black Hawk Down.

Then they went HYPER-Islamic, with the Islamic Courts Union until about 2006.

So, a bunch of Islamics running Somlia, and everything was cool there, the people actually seemed to prefer hardlined Islam to fark and fight anarchy, but they couldn't keep their Islam bullshiat in their own borders so Ethiopia ran them out to the shores.

Well, Entrea needs money, so Ethiopia pays them to help them fight the Islamists in Somalia. But Entrea needs money and hates Ethiopia, so they use the money to buy gear to sell to Somalia so that the war will never end.

Warning: I am very drunk and it's 10:00 in the morning, so sorry if I make less sence than East African politics.

Wikipedia says otherwise:

Demographics:

Eritrean society is ethnically heterogeneous. An independent census has yet to be conducted, but the Tigrinya people and the Tigre people together make up about 80% of the population. These form the bulk of the country's predominantly Semitic-speaking population.
The rest of the population is from other Afro-Asiatic groups such as the Saho, Hedareb, Afar, and Bilen. These Cushiatic-speaking peoples are thought to be the oldest inhabitants of the Horn of Africa.
There are also a number of Nilotic peoples who are represented in Eritrea by the Kunama and Nara.
Each ethnicity speaks a different native tongue but, typically, many of the minorities speak more than one language.
There exist minorities of Italian Eritreans (concentrated in Asmara) and Ethiopian Tigrayans. Neither is generally given citizenship unless through marriage or, more rarely, by having it conferred upon them by the State.
The most recent addition to the nationalities of Eritrea is the Rashaida. The Rashaida came to Eritrea in the 19th century[61] from the Arabian Coast. The Rashaida intermarried with the Tigre and Beja clans, and are typically nomadic, and number approximately 61,000, less than 1% of the population.
Ethnic groups with low population have little influence on life in Eritrea.

Languages of Eritrea:

Many languages are spoken in Eritrea today. There is no official language as such, but Tigrinya and Arabic are the two predominant languages for official purposes. Italian and English are also widely understood.[62] Most of the languages spoken in Eritrea stem from the Semitic and Cushiatic branches of the Afro-Asiatic language family. The Semitic languages in Eritrea are Arabic (spoken natively by the Rashaida Arabs), Tigre, Tigrinya, and the newly recognized Dahlik; these languages (primarily Tigre and Tigrinya) are spoken as a first language by over 80% of the population. The Cushiatic languages in Eritrea are just as numerous, including Afar, Beja, Blin, and Saho. Kunama and Nara are also spoken in Eritrea and belong to the Nilo-Saharan language family. English is spoken to a degree by more educated Eritreans and a legacy of British occupation. Italian is a legacy of colonial times.

The Tigre and Tigrinya folks have thier own freaking LANGUAGES, so that would seem to indicate an ethnicity, wouldn't it?

Eritrea sounds a bit like Switzerland.... with several ethnic groups with seperate langauges molded into one nation, driven by the common desire not to be absorbed by their larger neighbors.

Which, of course, is precisely why they're supplying arms to the anti-Ethiopian side in Somalia, so that the Etheopian-backed puppet government will be overthrown, and Etheopia will be less able to bully thier neighbors (such as Eritrea).
