I love her, but oh man, her solo album was the pits -- overproduced and too "shiny" sounding. The lack of Budgie's drums was glaring and painful.

The punk ethos was to have an open mind.

I thought the punk ethos was to argue incessantly about who is and who isn't a real punk.

NuttierThanEver: Siouxsie was sooooo farking hot back in the day.

My favorite part of the infamous Bill Grundy interview with the Sex Pistols, up until Steve Jones calls him a "dirty farker" and a "farkin' rotter", is when Grundy, who apparently was about half in the bag when he did this interview, pretty blatantly tries to pick up Siouxie.

Apparently, that's what pissed Steve Jones off enough to drop the f-bomb.

You mean the part where Brad Gurewitz stated Epitaph Records, and then made a distribution deal with Sony so that "punk rock" bands would be in every Best Buy and Media Play in the land? And then signing such "underground" bands as the Offspring, Rancid, New and Found Glory? And then making sure those bands were all over MTV in the 90's, with tours sponsored by Target and Miller Lite? Yeah, that was pretty punk rock of them. I'm glad they're not into all that consumerist jive.

Oh no you di'n't say Rancid isn't punk. I don't know if you noticed, but Epitaph is a record company, and if they want to reach their audience, the CDs should be sold at Best Buy, etc. That doesn't change the bands or the message; they do that themselves. Also Epitaph signs all kinds of bands, not everyone who doesn't sound like The Exploited is a poseur. If you don't think Epitaph is doing a good thing for the music world or their artists, you need to come up with something better or get your head out of your ass.

The game has changed a bit in the last 30 years. Then, saying "Fark" in a song guaranteed zero airplay, or mainstream notice (which the real punks didn't give a shiat about anyway).

Today they'll just put out an edited version and play it on Top 40 radio. Granted, the bands that do it can be sanitized emo poseurs who think they're "punk" (I'm looking at you, Fallout Boy), but it's still a pretty radical change.

I am gonna get killed for saying this but here goes:

I am not a fan. I think every band she was ever in was crap and every record she made was crap. There was no one more "Style over substance" during the punk days than Siouxsie. She was a talentless hack. She was in the first wave of the "we're not even trying" approach that became way too identified with punk rock and I will not forgive her for it. That attitude and Sid-style nihilism came to define the movement and ended up killing it.

Just my opinion, you are allowed to like her if you wish.

This. Like what you like. The only people who really give a shiat about the genres are generally douchebags. Who cares what is punk/emo/goth/metal or not? If you dig the music, that's all that matters.

Aging leaders of artistic expression cultures are always pretty funny. It's either "The kids don't know what it meant, get off my lawn," or it's Kurt Cobain with them.

I dunno why they are always so surprised when their style gets milked for cash anyway. At least Jello saw it coming.

The thing with punk seems to be a bit like the thing with Guitar Hero, a bunch of stiffs who insisted, some still insist on standing around and shouting "Stop that! Stop having fun!". While critics get lost on the social commentary of some punk bands, really it was about just having fun.

HA! I was waiting for one of you stupid punkers to come along and call something not punk. It is funny that you think that the Offspring were a well-known band when Gurewitz signed them. They were relatively unknown until their third album for Epitaph(notice how their first album was also on Epitaph).

For future reference, the next time you refer to the Offspring as being a bunch of mass-market sellouts, try complaining about how they left Epitaph to sign to Columbia. That is generally how the other, more knowledgeable punkers do it.

I don't know they could be a mainstream band without even releasing an album. I guess I might not be "punk" enough to know. Either that or you are 12 years old and don't remember a time before Ixnay on the Hombre.

Then you have Rancid, who also released their first album with Epitaph.

Know what else isn't punk? Arguing on the internet about what isn't punk.

Siouxsie still holds up more than almost any band from "back in the day." I love her music. So good.

This is the happy house. We're happy here. In the happy house...

They just don't make music like that anymore.
