Gotta love a band that thanked their hair stylist in the credits.

The lead singer got fired a couple of months after the song hit
#1, by phone.

How much of a douchebag do you have to be to have that done to you?

Dralenan 2009-05-15 06:20:51 AM
Let me add nothing to the thread to mention that they previously reunited a few years ago to re-record Too Shy for The Sims 2, in "Simlish". So only do the lyrics not make sense, they don't even make sense...

Personal life

Miller married Carolyn "Ali" Espley,[34] a former model from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on April 10, 1988. Espley is known as the girl in Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" music video. The pair lives in Santa Barbara, California, with their two sons, Holden (born 1990) and Marlon (born 1993).

I'd listen to the crappiest 80s one-hit wonder on an endless loop on a cross-country flight before I'd listen to most of the walrus dung you kids call music today.

LegLamp 2009-05-15 10:28:32 AM
From the caption under the picture: "Limahl, left, and his bandmates spilt up in 1983"

I'm sure they spilt up quite a bit when nobody was looking. I'm also pretty sure the hairdresser was involved in the spilting.

The most unnecessary, disposable one-hit wonder of the 80s to have been crapped out of the UK and to now reform and torment us with that one song we can't stand is:

Flock of Seagulls?
The Vapors?
Thomas Dolby?
Power Station?
John Parr?
Big Audio Dynamite?
Cutting Crew?
M/A/R/R/S?
Gary Numan?
Soft Cell?
Gang of Four?
Haircut 100?
JoBoxers?
Dexy's Midnight Runners?
Frankie Goes To Hollywood?
Godley & Creme?
Doctor & the Medics?
Modern English?

In my opinion, the phrase "one hit wonder" should only apply to bands that release one listenable song and then disappear.

Thomas Dolby, and Gary Numan do not belong in your list. Flock of Seagulls has a few good songs too.

Pretty much all those bands are better and more important than Kajagoogoo, but Gang of Four?? Really?? Classic, influential, and relevant....

Nick Beggs is a GREAT bass player. Fantastic chops.
I think that's the guy who toured with John Paul Jones in the mid '90s. I guess you have to be a pretty good bass player when you're playing for a bass player.

puckrock2000 2009-05-15 09:21:32 PM
To all above: usually "one-hit wonder" refers to appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which tracks a combination of sales and airplay in the US. So for the bands I mentioned, a lot had influence, and may have had hits on alternative charts, but as far as Top 40 goes, they were one and done.

Orgasmatron138:

Dude, Dexy's had two hits. And a pretty good sound.

Come on Eileen
I'm in Heaven

"Come On Eileen" was a #1, but "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" never made the Hot 100.

OK, I'll concede on "Hyperactive" and "Wishing", but Gary Numan certainly never appeared on the US charts again.

mfaby: Big Audio Dynamite a 'one hit wonder'?

Well, their only appearances on the chart were "Rush" (#32) and "Globe" (#72). Not exactly big hits.

Actually, Dee, my mistake; Gang of Four never made the Hot 100.

'One hit' means one hit.

Their weren't a singles band, any way.

socalnewwaver [TotalFark] 2009-05-15 09:59:21 PM
ok, first of all, i cannot stand the song "too shy".

having said that, however, one of their ablums was actually surprisingly listenable: "extra play".

it was kinda groovy and funky, hard to peg what genre it belonged to. but if you didn't know it before hand, you would never guess the music came from the same band who did "too shy", that's how different it was.

won't be seeing them tour or anything, but that was a fun album back in the day...

2001, promoting The Thunderthief, opened for King Crimson. Beggs played Stick exclusively in the show, IIRC. And was awesome.
