Am I the only one completely unimpressed with them? I listen to them and wonder what the hype is? I just don't get it. Then again, I do listen to some shiatty bands.

chemical_angel [TotalFark] 2009-05-14 02:12:17 PM
mediocre pop rock performed by sensitive, chinstrap beard having 'everyman' guys that sounds like it was recorded in a warehouse won't get me to watch anything.

+1, listening to them right now on my ITunes playlist actually.

Is subby confusing the terms "worth watching" and "shiat sandwich"?

Not at all. I actually saw them open for U2 back in 2005; pretty sure I was the only one in the audience that knew who they were.

/didn't realize this many people hated them

HBK 2009-05-14 02:59:48 PM
Those guys suck.

jaundice_joplin 2009-05-14 03:00:24 PM
ummmmm.. NO.

All Apologies 2009-05-14 03:00:50 PM
One of the best new bands out, performing some damn good rock music with some originality to it. Sure to be hated on Fark.

I think the fact that the radio has been playing them to death will probably be the end of them, that's not really their fault though.

In Phoenix on May 18th, I can't wait to see them. My ex-girlfriend loves the track Sex on Fire, we played it a lot.

Sajboski 2009-05-14 03:01:06 PM
First two albums rock the house down. Newest one, not so much.

ChEv3lle 2009-05-14 03:01:06 PM
I'm mostly a metal guy, but I've got a thing for KoL. I can't really say I like a lot of their stuff, but there are 3 or 4 songs I dig.

That dude's voice is sexy... and I'm either secure in my masculinity or a closet homosexual to say something like that. I haven't figured out which... sex on fire does funny things to me.

Mr_Fabulous 2009-05-14 03:01:12 PM

You are not alone, sir or madam.

Not gonna hate on them, either. Music is purely subjective.

Your favorite band sucks and all that.

/Likes KoL
//first two albums at least
///cause that's what the cool kids are saying, amirite?

Because EVERYBODY is hated on fark..

Wow, a faux-indie rock group with strategically patchy beards and a constant sense of irony.

No thanks, I like to enjoy my music.

No, I know the music tab fairly well (I've incited textual riots based on headlines I've submitted involving U2, The Melvins, Coldplay, The Flaming Lips, etc).
I was more shocked because I don't recall any venom the last time Kings of Leon came up in a thread.

this... though they had 3 albums before... I still think "because of the times" was their best work.

A lot of people biatch about how certain big acts are popular while underground artists get unnoticed. Considering that Kings of Leon has been pretty underground for years and just recently blew up in popularity, I think that it proves my pet theory that people will hate any band just because they are put into context of the "mainstream;" It's such a silly, visceral reaction.

Not to say that Kings of Leon is the greatest, more to put out the idea that maybe those underground acts people adore are possibly just as shiatty as mainstream acts.

That's because they're becoming mainstream now.

Anything mainstream is an anathema to Farkers, don't cha know.

Just listened to a couple of their songs on youtube... eh, they're ok. His voice borders on whiny to me. Kinda cute though.

Mainstream Anathema would be a great band name.

Leetdewd 2009-05-14 03:28:21 PM
KoL may not suck, but their song "Sex on Fire" absolutely does. It's right up there with anything by GnR when it comes to making me want to destroy my radio and everyone who had a hand in the production of the song.

CentralValleyCali 2009-05-14 03:29:27 PM
Woot! A crappy band for a crappy tv station!

Kali-Yuga 2009-05-14 03:31:51 PM
and claims that their music was influenced equally by their religious upbringing

Strike 1

Spent much of their youth traveling around the South with their father, Ivan, a traveling United Pentecostal Church preacher.... The boys learned to play drums, guitar and bass as children while performing gospel songs in the church.

Strike 2

Caleb stated though that "...because of the way we [the band members] grew up, we were really sheltered from music and we didn't know that much..."

Strike 3

It gets its point across, and is enjoyable to listen to. We found meaning enough for us in the lyrics as to where it became a song we liked to play.

It didn't need luridly graphic lyrics to get its point across.

If 'Anything Goes' is more to your liking, play that with your girlfriend. It wouldn't have worked for who I was with.

SpeckledJim 2009-05-14 03:36:51 PM
So long as they don't play THAT song. It's a good one but it seems to be playing on the radio every damn time I turn it on.

/still mourning the death of Indie 103.1 around here - at least they switched songs occasionally

I'm a pretty big KoL fan but there is no way I'm watching that suckfest.

The Music Tab is a haven for people who like bands you've never heard of that are consequently never mentioned on the music tab. Which makes you wonder why they're here, other than to let you know how little they dislike bands you like. Which leads to the obvious question, why do you think I farking care whether enough to know that you hate the band I like.

Go find the tab that does have the band you like and you and the other 3 people who visit that site can revel in your fantastic and superior musical taste.

UncleScam 2009-05-14 03:43:35 PM
many haters, though few know what the deal is.

agreed, though, that their first two albums (and the sophomore one in particular) are great.

dunno why, but i was thinking of the ramones performance at the MTV music awards many a year back (maybe '96?) - they performed a medley of all the nominated movie songs. ramones singing madonna? awesome.

You're just mad most people think your music taste sucks. You shouldn't care what people think, but instead have revealed yourself to be a big whiny vagina...who listens to a crappy band!

Do other people's opinions affect you that much? Does it change the music for you? No. So go listen to Kings of Leon, knowing that it doesn't matter if people on Fark think they suck. Despite them sucking massive amounts of ass.

Booyaxe 2009-05-14 03:59:27 PM
Kol seems to be the new Modest Mouse. Started as a "raw" indie band, gained recognition, and now trying to make pop rock tunes. They'll probably be obsolete next year sometime. I'm not really down with the whole indie genre anyway. Some of it is good (check out "man-man"), but when you tr to pass off sounding shiatty as talent, it irks me.

/just my opinion
//you love it

Teddy Hopper 2009-05-14 03:59:52 PM
The recent RS article made their whole "backstory" seem pretty contrived to me. Though of course that could have as much to do with the writing as the story's actual legitimacy or lack thereof.

The one dude's quote that he "hates touring more than anything in the world," however, is unambiguously douchey. Get some perspective, moran.

the music, i can take or leave. its ok generic rock.

Jonathan Hohensee:

More the converse, i'd say. these guys dont sound anymore talented than probably 10,000 other bands that play clubs every weekend. they just caught a couple breaks, got noticed by the right person or had the right look. I think thats what people react to.

TeddyRooseveltsMustache [TotalFark] 2009-05-14 04:00:38 PM

Haven't heard much from KoL outside what the gf plays, but when I do the lead singer's voice reminds me of Michael McDonald.
