Then there's that line from Tom Cruise in Risky Business "Porsche... there is no substitue" was actually "I'm a closet homosexual, please don't tell anyone."

It's a subtle difference, but Tom is really anal about it.

it's interesting how years of quoting have had a Chinese whisper effect on accuracy

Is that like a kind of quiet Chinese fire drill?

/was saying "Luke, I am your father" the day after the film came out
//to my friend Luke, of course

Does Vito Corleone actually say "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse"? I know Al Pacino says "My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse," but I don't think Marlon Brando said it.

I believe he does. And according to IMDB, he does.

Don Corleone: You look terrible. I want you to eat, I want you to rest well. And a month from now this Hollywood big shot's gonna give you what you want.
Johnny Fontane: Too late. They start shooting in a week.
Don Corleone: I'm gonna make him an offer he won't refuse. Okay? I want you to leave it all to me. Go on, go back to the party.

VITO CORLEONE (to Johnny, after glancing to see Sonny enter)

You spend time with your family?

JOHNNY

Sure I do.

VITO CORLEONE (to Johnny, but toward and about Sonny)

Good. 'Cause a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man.

(then, to Johnny)

Come're.

(then)

You look terrible. I want you to eat. I want you to rest a while. And in a month from now,

this -- Hollywood bigshot's gonna give you what you want.

JOHNNY

It's too late, they start shooting in a week

VITO CORLEONE

I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.

(then)

Now you just go outside and enjoy yourself, and ah, forget about all this nonsense. I want

you to leave it all to me.

JOHNNY (exiting)

All right

It's "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." My theory on that misquote and the "Luke, I am your father" misquote is that people add the character names in to give additional clues as to what they're referencing.

"Luke, I am your father, I take care of the place while the Master is away."

"I am your father" wouldn't have made sense as a memorable quote. It has no context.

There wasn't any situation where Kirk would have said "Beam me up, Scotty" in the first movie. I don't think anyone ever alleged this. The first movie was just people staring at visual effects.

I'm pretty sure that the origin of the misquote "Play it again, Sam," is the title of the play/movie "Play It Again, Sam." Woody Allen knew that the real line is "Play it." He titled the work "Play It Again, Sam," because the plot of "Casablanca" was repeating in the life of his character.

If you want to get REALLY nit-picky, in the book he doesn't say "frankly". It's just, "my dear, I don't give a damn."

There was, but it was never said in that manner in the series either.
