I can see two sides of this. There is the one side that says that when the man gives the wife the money she should not be greedy to buy just things for her but should buy for the man also. It is always good to be nice to other people and to share with them. When I cook I share with my roommate but she does not like my food. When she buys the food at the fast food places she shares with me but I do not like the food that she likes. She is bigger and I am smaller and we like different kinds of food. If she did not share with me I do not think I would hit her but maybe in Saudi Arabia this is the culture of that country.

The other side of this says it is not good to hit the woman. If someone hit me I would be very sad and would not want to be the wife of that person for longer. I interpreted it that the $1200 was not just for the abaya. Maybe he gave her $1200 for food, clothes, and household goods for the both of them, and she spent $900 of it on clothes for her. I'd be pissed if my wife blew 3/4 of our budget on her clothes. Not pimp-slappin' pissed, but yeah I'd be pissed.

Chances are that the woman is choosing to buy the name brand so as to not sweat to death in a cheaper imitation. Also, the judge and husband might be figuring if she's spent RA$9,000 instead of the full RA$12,000 - then she must be pocketing some to spend on herself in another fashion unauthorized by her owner.
