I'm not much into taxidermy, but some of those were pretty cool, but the baby animals in it made me sad.

Wow. Carcasses. Interesting thing to put on display. i see some endangered animals made it there too. Not sure i see the point in killing for sport.

The tone of your comment in the context of the topic suggested disapproval. My apologies if I misjudged.

I'm sure there's lots of things on Fark that you don't see the point of. Do you go into those forums and post to that effect?

isnt the point of forums to express an opinion and/or make a comment?

and i do have disapproval over killing something solely for the purpose of mounting it. oh but wait, am i allowed to post that opinion in a forum, or should i have some facts and formulas?

Taxidermy as a matter of preserving specimens for a museum seems scientific. Taxidermy as a personal hobby just is kinda creepy.

That said, the ultimate in Taxidermy would be the stuffed corpse of Andy Kaufman.

Norman Bates would be proud.

Also, whats with all the endangered species and infants? last I heard taxidermy still was stuffing dead animals. I try to be open minded but killing a little fawn and stuffing it so it can be fed by a grotesque fake arm ranks really high in my "creepy" scale. Also cutting the neck of a giraffe.

Now if they are just fakes I guess it isn't really taxidermy.

/And that would much better.

I grew up hunting & trapping, & I agree with you. Unless you need to eat them or cull them, you're killing an innocent critter for no reason. Same with spiders, snakes, etc.

The_HR_Issue [TotalFark] 2009-05-10 12:12:17 PM
Most likely the endangered/baby animals were ones that died in captivity and are being preserved by zoos and for historical records. Otherwise USFWS and CBP would be all over the exhibitors/taxadermists like stink on shiat for illegal importation etc (some permitting excluded).

*sigh* Here's how it works:

- if it's old, ugly, or creepy, killing it is OK
- if it's cute and cuddly, killing it should be a crime

my step-uncle is a taxidermist and as a result, my poor mother has been obligated to accept over 17 different pieces of taxidermy that have been gifted to her over the years. my husband and i slept next to a full bear skin rug last christmas.

Hey, sloth are the kung-fu masters of the animal world. You think that all going slow and shiat is just for kicks? No, sloths save energy, for when the time come to fight or go away, the sloth will move from 2 to 350 MPH, and in some cases slice your head off with their claws.

i grew up with hunters, and i was always taught that if you are going to kill something, you damn well better be eating it. and ill have you know, i catch all the spiders in my home and take em outside! taking a life purely for the love of killing or the excitement of getting that trophy lion says something about a society.

Why is everyone assuming that these animals were killed for the sole purpose of stuffing them? Animals do die for other reasons, you know.

Absolutely. If you want to hunt for sport, go after the feral hogs.
They need killing.

So I clicked on the link hoping to see the best of the best of the best taxidermy. Maybe it could convince me that the random heads I see on random walls weren't as basically dumb and out of context as they usually see.

Sorry, wasn't convinced.

They built a Cabelas on the outskirts of town. Apparently, it has a whole mountain of dead stuffed animals. I don't really see the appeal of that either, there is a very wonderful zoo about 5 miles away.

"Because I don't understand it and it doesn't appeal to me, it's wrong."

Is that how you feel about the possibility that gorilla is a pretty damn intelligent, sensitive, and likely self-aware animal? (And many of the other animals are as well?)

I am not a member of PETA or a fan, but killing and hunting for the point of stuffing hardly seems like a good way to learn about, or respect animals or show your love of the outdoors, or even show your superiority as homo sapiens at the top of the food chain.

Mainly seems to show you're a dickhead.

eraser8: What a waste of good sandwich meat.

Just because you have an animal stuffed, does not mean you can't eat the meat. This is what I don't get about people who put down hunting "for sport." Of course you eat what you kill.

Xenominim 2009-05-10 12:34:16 PM
Like several others have pointed out but all the anti-hunting advocates just skip right over, odds are most of these animals barring the full grown deer and bears did not die from hunting. Zoos, dead animals found in the wild, even roadkill that's in decent shape can all be sent back and stuffed if folks want to. Sometimes poachers who are caught can have their kills confiscated and used as well which is about the only way you can argue some of those might have died wrongly.

I agree... Except for the spider part. If I see a spider outside or come up on it, all is well. I find a spider cause it's crawling on me, it's gettin' squished.

I'm don't care for killing purposely for the point of a stuffed trophy, but I know that around here, the more interesting and intact road kill sometimes gets stuffed for museums and public attractions.

Nonetheless, whenever I see a stuffed animal, it makes me wonder about that line that keeps us from stuffing people. I mean, we fetishize our dead in irrational ways anyway, so why not stuff mom and leave her in a rocking chair by the window and pretend to have conversations with her?

Hmmm, googling "human taxidermy" doesn't turn up much, other than it might be illegal (and yet stuffing a corpse full of chemicals and putting make-up on it, stapling its face into a pleasing expression and dressing it in its Sunday Best is okay). Anatomy displays like Bodyworks aren't quite the same because those are like the exact opposite of taxidermy. I'm thinking of a posed styrofoam human-shape with the original skin dried and stretched over it and glass eyes jammed in.

I have a fear that Victorians probably did it, particularly with "natives", but I'm afraid to google for that.

Bleah, now I've creeped myself out.
