If I was him, I would done something like this:

"I see Glenn Beck back there somewhere, can someone describe what's going to him... I'm not sure he can see through his veil of tears"

If he did that, I would be worshiped as a god. The children would sing songs about him. There would be balance in The Force

Oops. That was supposed to be:

If he did that, HE would be worshiped as a god. The children would sing songs about him. There would be balance in The Force.

Whatever. It's late and I've had a pints of Guinness.

Loved the jab at notorious potty-mouth Rahm Immanuel. The Lawrence Summers line was a bit risky, though, wonder if he'll catch some heat about that.

It's nice to have a cool, yet nerdy president.

Oh, wait. Scratch that. He's The Funky President.

Jimmy and Dr. Cornelius for the win, b*tches.

Were you watching the same speech everyone else was?

Some of his timing was off, and the Summers joke was too high-brow for most people, but that stuff was almost as good in print.

Now, Wanda Sykes: that was some of the most pathetic comedy I've ever seen. She wasn't good hosting Premium Blend and she was worse now. The "20th Hijacker" joke was outright disgusting, and she didn't even pretend to be focusing on what was funny instead of what was partisan.

Again, say what you will about Wanda Sykes; I'm sure she deserved it. But Obama's actually quite good at humor.

Yah, the peter pan/chavez joke was clever

It was a good speech, great jokes and he delivered them well.

Anyone have a link to the full presentation (not just Obama's speech)?

I see what looks like Bernadette Peters next to him.

Not a whole lot of book-readers in that group. I really liked the joke on Cheney about the memoirs, "How to Shoot Friends and Interrogate People." It's a take on the Toby Young book "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People." Of course, I'm not sure Obama got teh funny on that one either... his delivery was a little off.

/Waiting for the GOP outrage at something he said though. His comparison to God and his "on the 73rd day, I'll rest" shtick had a nice ring of blasphemy (blasphem-you) to it.

TwistedFark 2009-05-10 09:01:11 AM
That speech deserves some sort of new Presidential Seal of OH SNAP!.

The Michael Steel joke/Rush Limbaugh joke absolutely floored me.

I said in the other thread that it sounded to me like Jon Stewart had written the speech. Someone else then mentioned that the Daily Show/Colbert Report writers were seen at the round table earlier...

Makes you wonder huh?

Also it makes you boggle - just how farking connected is a cable comedy network these days?

Meh - he's just playing off the shiat that they do calling him "the messiah" all the time. Basically showing them that he doesn't give a shiat what they say, and everyone knows it's a joke.

Props to him - if they keep putting the crap back on the Republicans (David Gibbs is quickly becoming the "oh snap" master of the press corps) by using a bunch of humor that just makes the GOP look like the retarded tools they are, then they are going to go down in history as the final nail in the right wing coffin here in the USA.

The bit about doing the hundred days in 72 days and then resting on the 73 had Colbert written all over it. Even the delivery was Colbertesque.

Warning, Freepers ahead: 2009 White House Correspondents' Dinner [LIVE THREAD] (new window)

I looked through some of it last night after the event, and from what I could gather, they were pretty much disgusted and thought Bush was funnier, more honorable, and better at everything. Add in the random jokes about Michelle having a mustache, bad fashion sense, or big arms. Add a pinch of racist humor. That pretty much sums it up.

I think they're still waiting to hear what Rush's talking points are before they can parrot them and express their absolute outrage.

TwistedFark: I said in the other thread that it sounded to me like Jon Stewart had written the speech. Someone else then mentioned that the Daily Show/Colbert Report writers were seen at the round table earlier...

The round table was from Friday, if I remember correctly. It was just shown as filler while everyone was eating dinner, between the introduction and the actual speeches. There were writers from the Daily Show, Colbert Report, West Wing, and Letterman, at least.

That's not to say that some of those writers weren't involved - I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were (hell, if I was the President, those are the guys I'd call to help on a speech like that) - but it's not like the roundtable was going on immediately beforehand, as I believe was implied.

Please enlighten me. I do read a bit, and I definitely wouldn't put it past Toby Young to be derivative in his book naming convention, but I am unfamiliar with your reference. That was just the first thing that came to mind when I heard the joke.

/Didn't mean to get snobby with the book readin' thing, just figured that important people (like those in that room) don't take time to read minor pieces of fictional fluff like that book. I did generalize a little too much though... my bad.

Him trying to control his laughter after the Boehner line was great... It sounded to me like the "Wassup John?" thing was unscripted - like he knew that he just had an "oh snap!" moment, and couldn't help himself. I would have absolutely loved to see the look on Boehner's face when he heard that.

How to Win Friends and Influence People predated the book you mentioned I do believe.

Wow, two whole threads on this out of what, five? And people think Obama isn't covered enough.

Obama was funny, he had some good riffs, though I think him taking partisan shots at his predecessor was less than becoming of a president. Then again there was more than just a kernel of truth to his joke when he addressed the room as "And all of you voted for me! Oh wait, sorry about that, I forgot about the Fox Table."

Funny joke, but also true in the sense that it was a very Democrat friendly crowd, and even they grew silent at some of the partisan attacks by Wanda.

/Still need to see Colberts damnit.
