Pretty cute?? I think you mean pretty fat & she looks 35 not 25.

She's not bad. That might be the ugliest, least flattering dress I've ever seen though.

Imagine me stabbing subby repeatedly for this blatant lie of cute.. I'd rather revisit the Caturday thread for cute.

I can say the two sides to this. The one side is that it is sad that she is not making the money but the other side is that the person of the submitting finds her cute. I do not know if I find her cute. She is bigger than me and seem like the bigger person but not bigger than my roommate and not older than my roommate. Do you think she is cute? I do not know if you do but want to know.

The dress is terrible but she seems cute enough...I'd hit it....and I'd steal $20 out of her purse just before I crawled out the window.

She looks like Martha Stewart, but not as stylish.

I'd hit it like a hurricane does the coast.

That is the worst opening sentence I've read in awhile. Wonder Woman? Really? Known for her multi-tasking skills, was she? If I gave a shiat about such things, I'd call it sexist, but as it is, I'll just call it inane.

dletter: She's not bad. That might be the ugliest, least flattering dress I've ever seen though.

Exactly what I was thinking. "Today's that photo shoot, I need something nice to wear. Better go dig up Grandma...." I guess that's just hipster LA.

FTA: "In fact I lose more money than I make."

Depends on how she means this. If she means that she's losing more money than she makes, including what she makes at her day job, then yes, I'd think one could assume she's at least near broke. (I'm also assuming she's not a trust fund kid, otherwise why would she need a day job?)

More importantly, at what point in this article does the author back up the hyperbolic statement, "Jex has created a local music empire... [and] a very influential record label"? One of the bands got a song added on Sirius? That's it?

fair enough. i assumed she meant she lost more money on her non-profit venture than she made on it, but it was still worth her while and within her financial means to do so - or why would she keep at it?

What's her business model?

Step 1: Get trust fund.
Step 2: Start record label.
Step 3: Bankruptcy.
Step 4: Reincarnate as trust fund baby?

Seriously, Adam Smith's invisible hand has nothing on these next generation millionaires. Her bands are horrible, and she dresses like my grandmother's cleaning lady.

1. cuter.
2. makes more money.
3. doesn't dress like the cleaning lady.

WIN.

Watched the vid from Henry Clay People.

Does it really take seven musicians to play three chords?

Catchy though.....in a kinda Dandy Warhols-Brian Jonestown Massacre sorta way.

Oh,and the chick label owner--she is quite a bit cuter than my hand.
(apparently farkers got some damn sexy hands)

This enterprising young lady may not be making much dough now, but I'm sure she'll be wealthy and very successful if she keeps it up. Quite inspiring.

Yeah, it's hard to tell from this poorly constructed interview/article. But I've known lots of people, particularly music folks, who sink almost all their money into projects like this. Heck, most people I knew around that age were sinking all their money into alcohol at the very least - it's not like the early/mid-20s is the age known for the most wise and frugal financial decisions.

I'm still not sure if she's a trust fund kid. Why have a day job, in addition to running the label?

Or not. There's nothing in this article that really appears to separate her from the thousands of other people just like her who have attempted to start a small label. Like I mentioned last night, there's nothing in this article to back up their claims of "empire" and "influence." I've seen lots of similar bedroom labels fail in my time, and even some that gain moderate success, only to get screwed and crash and burn.

Not to mention that we have no idea what her deals with the bands really are. It could be like that scene in "24 Hour Party People" when Tony Wilson tries to sell the Factory label, only to admit that he doesn't have contracts with any of the bands (or more specifically, he has a contract that says that he has only the right to fark off)

odinsposse 2009-05-10 01:19:10 PM
I wouldn't consider starting a record label in LA to be creating "a local music empire." Every waiter and cab driver not trying to be an actor is trying to sign bands to their record label.

america loves rewarding failures.....25!? yeah ok......successful because she loves doing something she sucks at? huh

The dress looks like the kind of waitress uniform about which I would say that if a girl can make that sort of waitress uniform look good, then she's got to be pretty well-put-together.

She's ok. I'd hit it because she has a vagina and isn't hideous.

I understand all the "sharp knees" business is a tongue-in-cheek thing, but come on guys. She's pretty attractive, and any straight man who doesn't like curves has issues. I'd hit it HARD.

I love The Henry Clay People! I want to see them moderately blow up and it seemed like it was going to happen after SXSW, still maybe on course.

Anytime I meet someone from LA, I tell them go see them on a Monday night at the Spaceland or whatever. Two out of the three who have listened to my advice thanked me!

As a bedroom label owner, I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Though I release tunes for friends of mine, the label's mostly a front for my own projects. Don't have to worry about contracts that way.

I also work full time (or I'm at work full time at least), so any losses taken on the label are absorbed.

/good luck to her
//would hit it
///especially in dead grandma's dress

Gotta agree with imcguyver on this. I can't tell if she's fat or if the puffiness of that dress just makes her look that way.

sp0rk_of_psychosis 2009-05-11 10:42:59 PM
as a dining room recording artist, i find her image lame. on the other hand, i'm too lazy for cd baby or tunecore. unless part of the one year deal is a beej and profit from the first 500 t-shirts goes to me, not really interested.

i once came up with a 'annual guitarist expenses' formula based on the different amounts i used to play. strings, cables, time as a factor of minimum wage...so yeah, over $70k in about 15 years. that's why i joke that the 100-200 tracks (of varying quality) i've recorded / burned / jammed on live with friends is my real retirement fund. it only takes one good hit to cover the investment and there's a library to pick at from there.

/it takes you 7 years to come up with your first album
//they give you 7 months to come up with your second
