TFA That information caused some concern, but they decided against medical tests such as amniocentesis - used to identify potential birth defects and other problems.

Instead, the Armbrechts relied on their faith.

While I'm very happy for this couple to finally have the child they wanted, way to play with a loaded gun. The chances of a woman with a history of infertility, at age 47, of conceiving a child with Downs Syndrome is 1 in 19.

They got lucky their 'faith' won out, because being of that age and being unprepared emotionally, psychologically and physically for caring for a downs kid is simply stupid irresponsibility.

Nice story. Is this another thread where the so called "Fark Athiests" must chirp in their worthless opinions on a subject they supposedly care nothing about? Kind of like a stamp collecting thread that they must enter to let you know they don't collect stamps and are somehow superior for it? Atheists are funny like that.

I'm pretty well versed on birth, but I don't see what atheism has to do with it.

If anything, you should be pre-empting the childfree, or the self-righteous who will find fault in these people wasting 12 years spending tons of money trying to get knocked up because they think their own genetics are so farking fantabulous they couldn't adopt one of the millions of impoverished children who desperately need a home.

These people are not only deluded and ignorant for insisting on birthing their own child without taking any precautions (such as being prepared in advanced for a downs baby which is highly likely)... but they're obnoxiously selfish for it too.

Add to that the religious aspect, and these people are the scum of the universe!

FTFA: The Armbrechts had tried for years to conceive. Recalling the fertility treatments, she said, "Bill had to chase me around the house to give me shots."

I LOL'd. I bet Bill's been chasin' her around the house to give her "shots".

This isn't faith. This is deliberate ignorance in the face of all common sense. There's a big difference.

That being said, some people want children so badly they get tunnel vision about other options. Maybe this couple couldn't adopt, or because of their age they didn't want a special-needs or emotionally disturbed kid. (They might get one anyway, but still).

So, she wasn't Fertile. Doctors work on her real hard, and finally get her to have a kid ... but now she thanks 'god'??

Regardless of the fact that there's no such thing as a god, even if gods existed, the doctors did the so called "miracle". Now she's going to have a farking down kid, creating the next generation of science-denying, god-praysing asshats. Hope the kid dies before it's born. We have enough dumbasses in this world.

Adoption is expensive... If you RTFA you would have seen that was their trouble with adoption.

What does infertility have to do with Down's syndrome?

I couldn't care less that these people are Christian. What I do care about is that, as the poster above you mentioned, these people were playing a genetic Russian roulette based on their mythology.

Good grief people, they couldn't adopt because it was too expensive. And it's not irresponsible, for heaven's sake... after 12 years of farking unprotected without children, why would they even think they might get pregnant at that age? If you RTFA, she says she thought her symptoms were related to menopause.

Adopting isn't as expensive as some people think. We adopted through HOLT International and it was $16k and that was the HIGH end. They do a sliding scale for those who need help with the cost.

This was 7 years ago so it was probably even cheaper 12 years ago.

NicoFinn [TotalFark] 2009-05-10 04:46:22 AM
Great. Now the kid is going to grow up with a false sense of superiority thanks to his parents telling him that he was "God's gift".

Uh... I didn't see the part where the girl had Down's. Did I miss it?

Anyway, I got a kick out of this:

"She wakes up at 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. and she's smiling," Susan Armbrecht said. "You can't be mad at a baby that's smiling at you.

As the father of two girls, I can definitely say that this statement is not always true. ;-/

Babies are not smiling at 2 and 4 am. They are squalling. That is a silly article.

I am 36 and I wouldn't consider having a child past 40. It would be selfish and stupid.

qitty 2009-05-10 04:53:12 AM
Unless you plan on aborting, why take the risk of amniocentesis? There are blood tests for the disorders that can be fixed before birth. There are ultrasound measurements that can predict Downs, so you can be prepared - Downs cannot be cured. Why shove a huge needle into the womb and possibly harm a healthy fetus? And yes, older parents need to worry more about Downs, but all pregnancies have risks... so unless you're planning on getting pregnant, checking for the slightest imperfect, and aborting... until you get it just right... why risk it? Doctors push amniocentesis on young healthy mothers too and it's foolish. There are other options.

http://www.americanpregnancy.org/prenataltesting/amniocentesis.html

"Miscarriage is the primary risk related to amniocentesis. The risk of miscarriage ranges from 1 in 400 to 1 in 200. In facilities where amniocentesis is performed regularly, the rates are closer to 1 in 400. Miscarriages can occur because of infection in the uterus, the water breaks or labor is induced prematurely. "

It sure as hell is irresponsible. If not, it is selfish. This child will be without a family very early.
