That's sorta like asking the Good Humor man ask to lecture about sewer maintenance.

It's only a shiatstorm because she didn't try to teach the kids that the earth is 6000 years old. Isn't that what ministers are supposed to do?

It bothers me that a minister was lecturing to a science class. I couldn't care even a tiny bit less about her sexual preferences. But what does her professional expertise have to do with science or math?

At that time, she shared her personal views on homosexuality, including a discussion of her lesbian wedding, the homosexual prom, and other such events and things that many parents were very concerned about once they heard this had taken place."

And yet, if a Catholic priest showed up at school and started talking about gay sex to the students, i'm sure people would assume he was cruising for a date.

chemical_angel [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 03:23:52 PM
On one hand, it's public high school. I seriously doubt any of this was news to the kids. On the other, no part of being a minister or a lesbian has anything to do with math nor science so it seems like there are issues of having an agenda.

Megain [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 03:27:59 PM
filed a lawsuit against that school district on behalf of the parents to defend their rights under the Ppublic Records Act to have access to that information as to exactly what the teacher said, what did she do, and how the students responded," Dacus says.
why don't they just ask their farking kids?

gopher321 [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 03:28:17 PM
Something smells fishy (hah ha) about this - she's invited to lecture about math and science but winds up speaking about "her personal views on homosexuality, including a discussion of her lesbian wedding, the homosexual prom, and other such events". Either things got waaaaaaaaay off track or whoever invited her had another agenda.

FTA...Parents requested information on what her teaching entailed, and the high school and district refused to share the information.

While I think a lawsuit is unnecessary, the parents do have a right to know what's being taught to their children, whether it's from one of their child's regular teachers or from a guest lecturer.

Guest lecturers on math and science have no reason to discuss their lesbian weddings, but a lawsuit? Lighten the fark up and just don't invite her back.

That's it. Every student who heard her talk will now have to come out of the closet as homosexual. There's no hope for them, we all know that once exposed to the diabolic "gay ray" of the homosexual agenda, innocent children suddenly find themselves drawn to make sweet love to the same sex.

no - it wouldn't have been any more relevant. don't invite her back

No. You have been invited to address a specific topic. Why she was invited to discuss a math and science course is beyond me. I suppose it's plausible that she has formal training in those fields above and beyond her ministerial duties. I have a friend who has a masters in theology and a masters in computer science.

This lawsuit doesn't really seem like a big deal. They're suing for information on what, exactly, the evil lesbian said during the lecture.

Given that the title of her presentation was "Out for Good." (at least according to the article), I'd say her talking about her Gay wedding was probably fairly relevant.

Is it hot when they meet and make out?

Sex ed? OK. Sociology? Well, probably. But math and science?

Look, lady. I'm glad you found a life partner and a good direction in life where you can help people. I fully agree that there's still a lot of anti gay bigotry and ignorance in the country, and that you want to make a positive difference.

But interfering with learning math and science? Not cool.

I'm sure it was relevant to her talk. I'm just not sure why the school thought it was relevant to a math and science class.

Humanities? Fine. Social Studies? Sure. History? Yeah, you could make a case that gay marriage is a valid topic of discussion there too.

But math and science? What does gay marriage have to do with either of those subjects? This topic has no more business in a science classroom than creationism does.

That's assuming that things actually happened the way ONN is reporting it. But now that I look around their website a bit, I admit that I'm beginning to suspect that assumption might not be warranted.

FloydA [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 04:33:30 PM
Yeah...checking around, as far as I can tell, there are no legitimate news outlets reporting this. There's one LGBT blog, Wing-Nut Daily, ONN and a couple of Christian sites that mention it, but nobody else. Further, the Pacific Justice Institute is also a far right "christian" legal group, dedicated to "protecting freedom of religion" by making certain that their version of Christianity is imposed everywhere.

I'm calling bulls**t on the whole thing until I see something other than this. I doubt there is even a suit, and I'm starting to doubt that there was ever any such lecture. The "lesbian minister" is not named in any of the news reports, so I'm starting to think this whole thing is a hoax cooked up by some "professionally offended" self-appointed moral guardians.

I still have no proof that she was invited to lecture math and science (or any other) students. The ONLY reporting of this story is on right wing blogs, and all of those seem to be directly quoting the Pacific Justice Institute's press release.

Not with the title of her talk that is being reported.

But there is a lot about the story that doesn't add up.
For example, "what was the name of the minister?" and "since when to guest lectures at high schools have titles?"

I really think this whole story is a complete hoax. I strongly suspect that it did not actually happen.

.

why dont we home school 100% of the kids?

Because then even more people would be butt-ignorant, and my job would be much, much harder than it is.

Think about it seriously for just a moment.
How much do you remember about how to do quadratic equations, matrix algebra, trig and calculus? How much do you recall about US history? How much biology do you remember? How fluent are you in French, Spanish and German? How many instruments do you play proficiently enough to teach someone else how to play them? How knowledgeable about world history are you?

Perhaps most importantly, how excited do you feel about coming home after an 8 hour work day and having to spend the next 6 hours teaching that stuff to your kids?

We hire specialists to teach because they are specialists. Yes, the public schools should be a lot better than they are, but pulling kids out of school and expecting their parents to do the job of educating them is simply silly.

One's profesional position does no mean they don't have knowledge in other areas. Perhaps she was known for scientific knowledge as well, and came to mention how science knowledge is important despite one's job. Perhaps she was asked if she were married, and didn't feel any shame about her love so answered honestly.

Not enough information for you all to knee jerk like you have.

These people would have been freaked out if they knew my 5th grade teacher was a lesbian. For god's sake, she's talking to high schoolers. They're already aware of sexuality, and she's not going to convert anyone.

Try harder. The question could be asked about why she's going off on that tangent in math or science class (no, I'm not trying to do anything there). But the problem people like you have is constantly is equating "homosexual _______" to "sexually explicit ______." No doubt you would see nothing wrong with a Catholic priest showing up and talking about regular prom or presiding over a heterosexual wedding. But being a homo is only about the buttsex and scissoring, amirite?

Looks like the school will soon have to go without girls softball, volleyball, or basketball teams to save from further lawsuits.

Well, successful teams anyways. The only coaches that win coaching these teams like to recruit for the other side.
