Sounds like their own damn fault. I mean seriously, how long can you use your plow and butter churn as an ATM? Sooner or later the party had to end.

I'm just glad I stayed away from the boom. I have a buddy who owes $30,000 for a plow that is only worth $75. Me? I put 25% down, bought before the boom, and have a fixed rate loan at 2.9%

I can't BELIEVE you went into debt to buy a plow! I saved for 10 years, and only bought the essentials and bought my plow with cash.

People who use credit are idiots.

Well yeah, I have a running ticker on Zillow which shows my plow's value in real time. My 401k is down, but my Zillow-based investments are going through the roof!!!

You better buy as many plows as you can because soon there won't be any left!!

I paid off my first plow using all the miles I get from paying my credit cards off in full EVERY month!

I just put down payments on 4 investment grade plows. Zillow rated them AAA.

I'm working on getting the 5th right now, but with the HUGE shortage of plows, you can only get them through a plow ownership company... i currently have 16 plowshares for the plow of my dreams. It isn't built yet, but I own it! I have a deed! Since the plow I bought is in Phase II, I still have to pay the annual maintenance for the yet-to-be built Phase II... but I now have the privilege of using the Phase I plows for a nominal fee!!!

The best part is, it forces me to use my plow. My kids will be so happy I can leave them "deeded" property!

I just hope Obama doesn't take all my new wealth away and give it to someone with no financial sense :(

They won't take unemployment? I'm gonna sell those farkers some plow insurance. Since they're morally opposed to insurance payouts it should be a very safe investment.

hyperspacemonkey 2009-05-09 07:47:42 PM
I don't get it. how does the government definition of unemployment even make sense for the Amish? Aren't the all employed producing and consuming inside their community? If they can feed and maintain themselves, why should they draw a paycheque? Or is this a question of paying property taxes, getting raw materials, etc?

Abox 2009-05-09 07:48:11 PM
FTA "We prefer to supply ourselves, but I told people that if they have no other option and no other way to make ends meet then they can take it," said Paul Hochstetler, bishop of an Amish district east of Goshen."

Wow, the Amish are so much more pious than the rest of us who prefer not to take government handouts but might if we fell on hard times.

Nice spaz. But it is more true than you want to believe. I have imputed income because, "GASP!" I have life insurance. The "poor" can't give up the price of two twelve packs of cheap beer to make sure their family is taken care of, so obviously I am filthy rich and should be taxed on my $20 a month life insurance.

Well, if you RTFA, you'll see that the Amish drawing unemployment benefits are those who worked at an RV factory (which isn't very Amish anyway).

Earns the STUPID tag.

You pay taxes whether you want to or not, so you can have benefits. Unemployment comes out of your salary while you are working, if you don't accept it, you are giving a gift to your former boss.

There seems to be a lot of belief that working in a factory "isn't Amish." The Amish are against technology that touches on the simple life. Other people's technology is just fine, as long as they leave it at the office. Anyway, this is the view of Amish that my sis and her hubby know.

Kierkegaard's Pseudonym: You're not Amish if you work for an RV factory.

A lot of Amish work in the construction / skill labor industry. Good farmland is hard to afford for a lot of them, since they dislike hitting up banks for massive loans or accepting government incentive programs targetting farmers. They're defintely still Amish though. Although it is weird to watch a guy unload a cordless drill set from the back of his buggy.

This is actually kind of a shame. You have a group of people that are occupying land here in the US. But they want nothing for it but to be left alone. And with that, they are happy to produce things for the outside world, which they shun. It helps support their solitary lifestyle, after all.

This has been a fine arrangement for a few hundred years now. They want to be left alone. The rest of us leave them alone, and still benefit from in the meantime.

But now that our economy is collapsing, their society, being at the bottom of the proverbial hill, is suffering for it.

//That.

How do they reconcile the fact that their religion is built upon a modest rejection of modern society and go to work inside a very modern RV factory? I realize that the Amish religion is closely intertwined with our modern one (since I used to routinely buy their excellent Swiss cheeses), but I had to drive out into the middle of cow-country in order to buy it.

Each Amish community reconciles this--or doesn't--in different ways. The elders choose the rules that a particular community lives by. Some choose to tolerate more contact with/impact of the outside world, some less. The bottom line seems to be, does it affect the way I live my personal life? So they may own a buggy, but take a ride in other people's cars. Or, some more "modern" communities may allow members to keep a cell phone for work-related matters, but leave it out in the garage at night. Without the factory jobs, those large families of kids who grow up and have kids of their own would not be able to get farmland and would be impoverished. The same compromises happen in heavily commercialized Amish communities, where they have electric-lighted businesses, but may or may not accept credit cards. It just varies.

But it doesn't mean we can't take the values such as green living, helping our neibors and craftmanship into this modern electronic world. Eventually the amish will have to wash thier hands of it and say forget it it's not possable to do this anymore without my family suffering. Their way of life has been dying a slow painful death for the past 50 years now.
