Quebecers will only care if the coffee was being sent overseas.

Haven't been to a Tim Hortons in over a year. We get free Timothy's coffee at work.

I won 9 free coffees and two donuts out of the 88 coffees I bought during this years Rollup contest. We have free coffee at work, and I've been cutting back on my purchases.

It's still half the price of Starbuxks.

We kept track at work because we were skeptical about the actual winners, but ending up at like 1 in 8.7 with about 140 coffees purchased.

Also, I have a Tim Horton's across the street from me, and another across the street from it, and then another about 3 km away down the same street. And my city has 200k people heh.

We have one in the next building. My home town of about 2000 had two... and it had crazy lineups during 'rush hour'.

I live in a city of about 55k people (including surrounding regions, 36k without), and we have four Tim Horton's in town.

I never understood Tim Horton's lunch specials.

Who wants soup, a donut and a cup of coffee for lunch?

That's just weird.

What do you expect? It is an American owned store, and the only profitable thing Wendy's has got. it's going to fail like everything else that props up their economy.

Well Wendy's has'nt owned them for three years. They are back to being a Canadian owned company.

Nothing. The reason it is so popular is they have marketed themselves to be ultra-Canadian. Some Canadians will lap up anything they think is Canadian, no matter how sub-par it is, because our culture is so close to American. Tim Hortons is a last resort, or a near healthy alternative at a truck stop. You are never going to see what the big deal is, because there is nothing to it. Where are you going? Maybe Canadian Farkers can suggest some fine eateries to check out in the area after you have been disappointed by Tim Hortons.

Kit_Wilde 2009-05-09 06:26:48 PM
I reckon this means they still won't open one in Val Marie, regardless.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. I'll be going to Vancouver so any suggestion of where to eat or what to do in that city would be awesome.

They make decent enough creme-filled doughnuts, I'll give them that.

Nakor BlueRider 2009-05-09 06:29:51 PM
I don't see why anyone would get something other than coffee or doughnuts from Timmy's. I love their doughnuts, but pretty much everything else they offer food-wise (even the muffins) vary from sub-par to crap.

Not if you're drinking just coffee.
A tall size (which I think is actually equal to an XL Tims, though possibly just a L Tims) is 1.79. Currently here a large coffee from Tims is 1.45.

So a difference of .34 (if Tall = L), and you get coffee with actual flavour to it, a nice environment to sit down in and the occasional free sample of food to eat. And the people working at Starbucks are almost always friendlier, and generally more attractive than the Timmies ladies.

Now the food on the other hand is twice the price - though the quality of the food at Starbucks is better than that of Timmies as well. And an apple fritter is actually a decent size again if you get it from Starbucks.

I second tsferg's statements. Tim Horton's is like Labatt Blue: mediocre at very best, but God save the Queen, it's Canadian, and that makes it as awesome as Don Cherry and the Canadian Olympic ice hockey team.

It depends on how much you're willing to spend. In terms of high end places, there's Tojo's (Omakase), Vij's (high end Indian), and Lumiere (Daniel Boulud's newest restaurant).

Be warned - they'll all cost you a hearty amount.

The headline made me laugh, the coffee makes me gag...

Dunkin' Donuts is the ONLY good brand of the three (SB, TH, DD)...

If forced into a SBucks or Timmy Ho's I have to get my coffee flavored (vanilla tends to mitigate the suck factor enough to make it consumable)

+1 for subby, -1 for TH coffee

SeamusFerrell 2009-05-09 06:44:40 PM
So is it just a coffee and doughnut shop that serves some other items such as breakfast sandwiches? A Canadian Dunkin Donuts? What is so great about it? Those are the only questions I have right now.

Donald_McRonald: [arches avec maple leaf]

That's the thing. Tim Hortons is at least authentically Canadian enough that they don't have to do that silliness of wedging a maple leaf in their logo like pretty much all the US fast food chains do. We get it. We're in Canada. There are men in toques screwing turtles in the street. We don't really need a reminder on your damned arches.

There used to be a Coffee Time near me. Filthy, run down, usually only one person on duty. Hardly did any business. They got kicked out and Tim Hortons moved in.

Now there are up to ten staff during busy times, two or three the rest of the time. The place is spotless, they do tons of business.

Tim Horton's in Niagara Fall, ON was a very nice (and cheap) place to have lunch. And I say that as an American, and I'm comparing this year's price to last year (when there was one Loon to the Buck).

It's a shame that it's so hard to brew a good, cheap cup of coffee at home and take it with you in the mornings...
