LGF has become the sane, or at least the least crazy, of the right wing sites. They disagreed with the crazy of the Teabaggers too, claiming that extremists hijacked it.

well, if someone that insane can come back to something almost resembling sanity, maybe there's hope for the rest of the GOP.

My mother...an RN and a formerly even-keeled woman, is stocking canned goods based almost entirely on what Glen Beck has intimated or straight-up told her.

I tolerate idiot pundits on either side, but this guy is really beginning to piss me off.

The Right media just doesn't create listeners or ad dollars, folks. They create followers. It's their right to do so, but it still chaps my ass. It's farking irresponsible.

My personal theory is that LGF is primarily concerned with making sure brown people are being bombed somewhere, but can take or leave other conservative hot-button issues. Unlike the rest of the wingnutosphere, which buys the money-saving crazy bundle, they select their crazy a la carte.

No, LGF is too far to the left for the liking of (what's left of) the GOP. Maybe they - along with everyone else who used to be in the GOP but was/is in favor of the stimulus bill, does not support waterboarding, thought the teabagging was stupid or does not have a problem with Obama's choice of burger toppings - can join the Libertarians or Modern Whigs, or perhaps start their own third party.

I've been watching the Republican party go slowly insane for the past 3 years. When Obama took the white house, it only accelerated the process a bit. And I strongly suspect that the Republicans will lose still more influence once the mid-term Congressional elections are done. All of which will only make them MORE desperate and MORE insane.

I just don't see the Republicans taking the steps necessary to salvage their reputations.

I'm close to thinking that these idiot windbags like Beck and Rush guys don't really believe all this stuff, but that they have another endgame in mind. It almost seems like they're trying to push all the right buttons in the hopes that someone off their meds decides to load a sniper rifle and go "do something about it," to save the the good ol' U.S.A. from the wrath of the next Hitler or the Anti-Christ, or both.

But that would just be crazy talk.

Snark aside, you touch on an interesting/disturbing point. A lot of the more vocal wackos were very much in lockstep with the Bush regime. Anything you might have said or done that put Bush's actions in a negative light earned you a 'traitor to the country' label from these self appointed super patriot guardians of the Constitution.

Fast forward to today.

Now these very same super patriots have completely dropped their stance of unquestioning obedience to the President, and imply that this government is not THEIR government. And they hint that disobedience to authority might not be such a bad idea after all.

Granted, a lot of the blather is from asinine bloggers blowing hot air....but it's indictative of a dangerous mindset, or at least a potential cultural shift. If the relgious right starts to feel that their religion is in conflict with the demands of a democratically elected government...well, we've seen what happens to societies who go down that road and it never ends well.

I know, the Conservatives on this board couldn't stop lauding Bush's position on Amnesty for Illegals, and the expansion of government spending like with Prescription Medicine. Bush and the Republican Congress could do no wrong that whole eight years but now....

As for TFA - Holy Crap, Glenn Beck used a Metaphor! What a NuttBag!

met⋅a⋅phor
/ˈmɛtəˌfɔr, -fər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [met-uh-fawr, -fer] Show IPA
-noun
1. a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in "A mighty fortress is our God." Compare mixed metaphor, simile (def. 1).
2. something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.

When LGF calls you a nutbag, you know that you've rode entirely off the rails...

Then again, LGF has been really pulling away from the religious aspects of the GOP, which is really where we need to be heading as a party. Isolate the crazy, and if Beck can help concentrate them on a single branch to get sliced off, I'm all for it.

I think the crazy people are going to win the fight for control of the Republican party. they're too well entrenched and have control of all the key positions. In fact, the nutball dittohead Limbaugh drones actually define 'RINO' as anyone who votes for small government and/or spending cuts. Can you imagine that? Being kicked out of the Republican party because you vote for smaller government and told you aren't a conservative anymore.

Well, if you look at what Karazic and Milosevic did...they didn't exactly order genocide against Muslims, all they did was mount a propaganda campaign. The army "got out of control" and were abetted by those in the populace who were susceptible to this type rhetoric. Thus, all Milosevic had to do was say he never instructed anyone to commit any acts--they did that stuff on their own.

So, for the guys who have already gone off the deep end and shot up a Unitarian church in Tennessee, with the officials finding the standard Liberal Bashing books and materials in his house afterward, all folks like Beck and Limbaugh have to do is say "we never expressly told anyone to go shooting things up."

I hear ya.

I've got some family in town, went to breakfast with all of them, and among other things, the following findings were presented, according to my mom, dad, aunt and uncle...

* Obama is indeed a muslim and he always was.

* Obama is more interested in looking good to foreign people than to his own countrymen

* Joke: "Americans will never elect a black man until pigs fly. Well, swine flu!" (ok, I chuckled a little)

* Nancy Pelosi is evil and a lying tramp (well, okay I'll agree with part of that)

* Obama is gonna take away all of our guns and Montana, Idaho and Texas are the only states in the country left that are fit to live in (it must be true, the NRA says so!)

* The presidency is run by a bunch of spoiled children (who should get off our lawn)

* The breadbasket of California is being allowed to run dry because of an endangered fish (I looked that one up, appears to be the case)

* Michael Savage is a true patriot, if there ever was one in this day and age

* Obama may not be the Antichrist, but he's paving the way for the next guy, who certainly will be the Antichrist (sadly, this is actually an improvement over what I've heard from them in the past)

* The Teleprompter of the United States of America is teleprompter

...among others.

His show is an entertainment show, not a news show. It makes perfect sense that he would do stand up as well. He wants to be a Colbert but he tries too hard.

19 Kilo 2009-05-09 03:52:34 PM
DNRTFA, but I'll assume that Beck is focusing on the scary _Satan_, rather than his traditional role (Satan's role, not Glen's).

If you consider Satan as the argumentative half to God, then this would actually make sense. Think back, if you will, to Job. In a perfect world, Satan (or the Gov't) would provide that sort of accusative position. Government would be the part of society that would say "So, down on your luck? Here's a stimulus check (or series of checks) to hold you over". Alternatively, it would say "Hmmmm. You seem to be selling poison as medicine. We should stop that".

You know, balance and check.

That said, I think he was going for more of the cloven-hoof, oooga booga Satan we're all familiar with.

/ooga booga!
