Not a country fan, I see. At least not in the '80s.

Who? from here too.

A look at his Wiki page (new window) cleared up much of that as for a brief span of time he seemed to have things really going for him.

Going out at .477, while certainly nothing to aim for, is unusual though in the years of practice needed to get that far without passing out...

/some good music though
//not my normal style but worth looking up some other songs
///thanks subby

Whitley had some major country hits in the mid- to late-'80s. He was married to Lorrie Morgan.

The guy had a big problem with booze and was found dead one day from alcohol poisoning.

Don't confuse the slick, polished Nashville sound that is country today with the real country musicians of yesterday. Cash, Haggard, Jennings, the Statlers, Hank Williams, so forth.

Whitely, while talented, was part of that "Nashville Sound", so I don't give him a lot of credit. Sad story, just not really my kind of country.

subby here. I knew this would bring out the country haters; that's ok, every music genre has detractors.

Closest paralell that quickly comes to mind is when Tupac died. Both were up and coming, both died too young, (and in very sad ways) and both deaths rocked their prospective music fields. Oh, and both get mocked by people who don't like their kind of music.

Whitley played in Ralph Stanleys' band and got started in bluegrass, so he's as 'country' as any of the aforementioned names, didn't wear a stupid cowboy hat, and had a lot more cred than most people you heard when he was alive (as well as now).

I remember hearing the radio announcement when he died. It shocked me, since he didn't seem the type. His wiki page says he used to drink perfume & nail polish to get drunk. That's hardcore.

Sad that he went out that way. He had some talent, but I was never crazy about his music. Just a personal preference thing. His style wasn't subversive enough to grab my attention. I'm kind of a weirdo when it comes to music. Actually, I'm kind of a weirdo in general...

Only reason I know about him is that a friend back in Austin wrote Hard Livin'. All things considered, I reckon that song was about perfect for him.

Saw him 3 weeks before he died in Chattanooga at the Governor's Lounge. Good show. He was a little bitty feller though. maybe 5 ft and 120 lbs or so

He should have waited about ten years. Lorrie Morgan wasn't even 30 when he died, and still had about ten years of hittability left at that point.

She'll be 50 in June, and still looks pretty good.

Keith Whitley came along when, dammit, someone had to be anti-Nashville at a time when Billy Ray Cyrus was topping the country charts.

goofoffgoose 2009-05-09 09:55:55 PM
My mom was a fan of both Whitley and Lorrie Morgan. I remember her telling me about how severe his drinking problem was; apparently Lorrie used to tie Keith's leg to her own when they went to bed, to keep him from getting up in the night and drinking. Very sad.

I see where you're coming from but your timeframe is off a bit. Cyrus didn't hit til 3 years after Whitley died. Speaking of anti-Nashburg, Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle were also making their initial jumps on the scene during Whitley's heyday. Gary Stewart was still around, too. Yeah, there was some crap, but that's true in any arbitrary stretch of time.

I was a sophomore in college when Whitley died. I was into some of the "new country" stuff that was bringing about a resurgence in popularity at the time. I saw Dwight Yoakam in concert that same year when his opening act was Clint Black, someone no one had heard of yet.

That era of fresh new, throwback country didn't seem to last too long before things started turning toward the likes of Faith Hill and Shania.

Yeah, bad troll.

Lest you forget that reagan actually turned the country around from economic disaster and led one of the largest growth periods the middle class has ever seen, and poppa bush unleashed the internet for the world stimulating the economic growth for clinton, lets see how saint obabma does, so far, not so good. If you are going to troll at least get your facts straight.

Also not a huge fan of modern country music but the 80s were ok, after that they were pretty bad.

Keith Whitley did have country street cred (heh), but he was also a part of the whole Nashville music row machine. Producer driven, the songs were brought to him, he didn't really write any of his hits.

Not saying he wasn't talented, because one of his last songs was "Tell Lorrie I Love Her", which was a great song, and showed a promising glimpse of what Keith Whitley could've done if he had been allowed to.

That aside, he still had a great voice for country, and the songs he recorded were all pretty damn good for 80s country.

JMO, of course.

I think he was just comparing it to modern flash driven country music, but then again most of the music industry has sucked lately.
