Can't remember the thread but Billy Joel popped up earlier this week on Fark.

I've always been partial to his album "52nd Street". Minus "Honesty" & "My Life", that is.

While I'm not a fan of his schmaltzy ballads and "We Didn't Start The Fire", A lot of his stuff is brilliant.

See, boys, this is why you take piano lessons. You can be short and ugly with bulging eyes but if you write nice songs and sing and play well you'll get insanely rich and score Christie Brinkley and, later on down the road, a hot twenty-something wife who's only two years older than your daughter.

Happy birthday, Billy. You're living the dream.

"the stranger" album is a classic.

I had Songs From The Attic on cassette in my car pretty much constantly for 2 years back in the early 80s. Good stuff if you're tired of the overplayed Top 40 stuff.

Happy Birthday, Billy.

Turnstiles is one of the most underrated albums of the seventies, imho. Much better than 52nd Street (which isn't that good to begin with) and almost as solid as The Stranger.

Happy Birthday Bill. And my favorite Bill Joel song, Matter of Trust, doesn't even have any piano in it.

Happy Birthday!

First album I ever owned was The Stranger. Still listening to it today. Finally got to see him life last August, well worth it!

Re: Songs From The Attic:

Hey, John!

That's one of the very few Billy Joel albums I don't have. Guess I never bought it since I thought it was just a compilation album. Googling it just now, I notice it's a live album, so maybe I'll pick it up. The guy's a terrific live performer, so I imagine it's a good one.

I'm especially fond of his slightly left-of-center tunes like "Zanzibar", (with a killer Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo) "Rosalinda's Eyes", "All For Leyna" "Big Man On Mulberry Street"... Stuff like that.

I watched a clip of his "Saturday Night Live" performance from 1977. There used to be some great music on that show. Elvis Costello, Boz Scaggs, Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, Keith Jarrett, Talking Heads, Ornette Coleman, Bruce Cockburn... Can you believe all those people were on in just the first few years of SNL?

Man... how things have gotten sucktacular.

Peace,
Gib :-)

"And my favorite Billy Joel song, Matter of Trust, doesn't even have any piano in it."

"All About Soul" is another one that doesn't have much piano in it. And he sings his face off on that one.

You may be right.

Just been youtubin' some Billy Joel and as I said in an earlier post, skip the hits...he's written and performed some great songs, and despite whatever personal/lovelife/drinking problems is still a damned good entertainer.

Just took my budding piano-playing nine year-old son to see Elton John/Billy Joel...great show, though only big hits. That's okay, he recognized them, and I wanted him to see piano is COOL!
