Shouldn't this get a follow-up tag? I remember two or three days ago, Keyes was saying "I'll be arrested, and I'll be proud of it!"

Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Anyway, before any knobs start talking about free speech, Notre Dame is a private university, and it lets STUDENTS protest. The campus is the property of a private institution, and can accept or deny anyone on its grounds.

If you ever went to any of his websites, you would quickly see what a nut-case he is.
He is the rudest arrogant person in America - and he disowned his daughter for being gay. I feel sorry she was related to him.

I truly hope this doesn't diminish his chances for a '12 Presidency.

It wont. I will stay at exactly zero or below.

Nonviolent protests used to be celebrated by the left as an exercise of free speech, not so much when employed by the right.

hubiestubert [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 12:18:55 AM
"Oh, I know they don't allow non-students to organize shiat, but I don't care. I'm not a student, I'm not affiliated with the school, but I don't care. I want MY say!"

Way to go Alan. Way to wage an effective protest.

How about you wage a protest in a school you at least attended. You know, like Cornell. Harvard. Why a school that you're not even associated with, other than the fact that it's cheap press?

Used to be waged by students of the actual university...

hubiestubert [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 12:24:47 AM
I think I'm going to head down to a school I don't attend, and then that'll really show them! Maybe I'll roll down to a church I don't attend and do the same. Yes, it will really show them that other people don't like what they do, as opposed to the effectiveness of their own protesting...

see, now since both Obama's went to Harvard, that might actually make sense.

of course i have no idea what he was protesting, I'm guessing it was something political though.

I just wanted to share this little gem from the Freeper boards about this topic:

Change minds? This abortion thing has been the carrot that these liberal political bastards have dangled in the face of the people for 36 years, all in the name of the freedom. Yeah fake blood is a little childish, what they need to do is the real thing, and use a 7 month old unborn child as the example, let them see what the procedure is really like. A life moving, stirring and suddenly slaughtered right in front of Barack Obama and his ilk.

I love that they protest. I love that they care passionately about their cause. I love that they are willing to face arrest to further their message.

Of course, when Code Pink protests, or anti-gun advocates, or World Bank opponents, I am sure you choose not to comment. I am sure you quietly applaud their exercise of freedom while saying nothing against it. I am sure you believe that they should be heard without anyone voicing an opinion contrary, nor should they be mocked for their beliefs.

I am sure of this because otherwise you would be a whining, flaming hypocrite, desperately clinging to his pathetic false martyrdom.

And you just can't be that guy.

I have often wondered what the f*ck this guy's problem is.

vartian: I just wanted to share this little gem from the Freeper boards about this topic:

Oh wow, it's been way too long since I visited Freep. I put a self-imposed ban in place because I felt reveling in my schadenfreude was unhealthy and the site was too negative. Now I'm thinking I should ditch my hippie conscience and amp up the entertainment. Freep is kind of like the political equivalent of monster trucks... there is something entertaining about them but you can feel you're getting stupider every minute.

At least with freepers, there's no chance of random pieces of metal flying into the stands and impaling you

Argh2 2009-05-09 04:01:43 AM
What an idiot.

Seriously, the strategy here is mind-bogglingly bad. When protesters (right or left) stage an event with the sure knowledge they will be arrested, and are immediately taken away, all they're doing is playing to their base, they don't influence the debate at all. The only way this can be seen is as Keyes pandering to the pro-life movement while taking an insignificant dig at Obama.

Why does Keyes think he can lead the country, if he can't even get a full 30 supporters to protest a classic wedge issue with him, AND blame the Republicans' nemesis at the same time?

Just sad.

I don't know... what if was holding a fork or a mechanical pencil and suddenly had an uncontrollable urge to violently facepalm? It could get ugly.

Well, to borrow a joke, there goes the theory that he's so unimportant in politics that he can't get arrested. He's unimportant, and arrested.

Argh2 2009-05-09 04:12:31 AM
bearsfolks: Nonviolent protests used to be celebrated by the left as an exercise of free speech, not so much when employed by the right.

I do celebrate them as an exercise in free speech. That doesn't mean I have to respect what they're saying.

Keyes got arrested because he wanted to get arrested; he knew it when he started out that day, and deliberately broke a property rights law to make sure it would happen. No one violated his right to free speech, or his right to protest.

And the problem with the Right's non-violent protests is that they always seem to include people who will announce to anyone within earshot how they're ready, willing, and able to take up arms against the elected United States government. You don't usually see that kind of thing at a non-violent "Left" protest.

Korovyov [TotalFark] 2009-05-09 04:30:18 AM
SilentStrider: of course i have no idea what he was protesting, I'm guessing it was something political though.

Ostensibly, he's protesting specifically at Notre Dame because Pres. Obama is going to speak at Notre Dame. So Harvard wouldn't be relevant.

Now, not a member of the Notre Dame community (and that being a private institution), Keyes doesn't have the right to protest on their property. He does have a right to protest as much as he wants, but it should be in statements to the media, the Board of Trustees, et al, and the university has no obligation to provide a platform for his protest.

If it were somebody else, I might wonder if it were merely to get publicity for a writing, speaking or punditry career or the like, but given that it's Mr. Mosh-Pit Keyes, there's also the reasonable odds that he's a crazy True Believer.

That's because protests happen on public property. This case was on private property and if you're on someone's private property and you're told to get out, you'd better do so.

He was posting a quote from a freeper board. vartian didn't actually say that. Also, just a point of curiosity, aren't third trimester abortions still illegal, barring specific medically necessary reasons?

You don't really believe that do you? Unless by "waged" you mean "glommed onto a protest organized by other non-university cabals"

And it wasn't just Keyes trying to draw people, it was also Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue. Between the two of them, they still couldn't get 30 people.

/guess they could give each other tips on disowning their gay children

This is not a repeat from 1996?

/And was there a mosh pit involved?
//And oddly enough, when Keyes was arrested in '96 for crashing a debate in Atlanta, Pat Buchanan was the only other Republican candidate to say that it was wrong. None of the the other candidates spoke out against it.

Alan Keyes is living proof that intelligence and wisdom are two VERY different things.

erveek 2009-05-09 02:09:43 PM
Alan, it's not that difficult. Find some right-wing student group on campus. One that doesn't realize how embarrassing you are. Don't worry. It's a big university. You'll find one. Contact them and ask if they'd like to have Alan Keyes be a speaker at their inevitable on-campus protest of Obama.

This is how to go from trespassing criminal to invited guest. Ta-daa.

Of course, he didn't do that because he wanted to be arrested for the publicity.

You're one of the rare ones. A lot of conservatives say they'd vote for a black candidate who agrees with their beliefs, and Alan Keyes has been more a more passionate pro-lifer than most of the recent Republican presidential candidates, but he rarely seems to get more than 5% in the numerous primaries he's run in.

It would've been pretty easy:

"A student group, Notre Dame Response, has organized its own protests regarding Obama's visit."

Funk Brothers 2009-05-09 06:48:09 PM
I guess Notre Dame has ended classes for the semester so I will be expecting my friend home soon and come up to Ohio State.

Anyways if Obama decides to speak at our commencement in spring 2011, I'll either graduate later, not attend commencement, or fly somewhere out of the country. I don't need to protest in such a strong way.
