Star Wars Blows. All of them.

"six"? I must be missing something...

Man, old trailers are terrible.

Free Radical 2009-05-04 02:44:04 PM
I'm going to see Star Trek this weekend.

ESB's was actually better than I was thinking it would be.

I wanna see A New Hope. When's it coming out?

Seriously, that trailer still kicks your ass into wanting to see the film.

Don't worry, it will come out soon as a new re-re-re-release with more enhanced special 3D effects with tons of new something-or-others.

Just noticed that the original trailer for A New Hope featured some Star Trek sound effects which aren't in the film.

Rifftrax just did Empire Strikes Back, you should celebrate Star Wars Day by purchasing it and watching it with your friends and loved ones.

Man, the trailer for the first Star Wars has George Lucas's art house sci fi movies from his college years all over it. The tone and music are straight out of THX 1138. He must have had a major part in developing that trailer, and it raises some questions about what he thought he had created. Did he think he'd made a nother art house flick? Did he not realize he was sitting on one of the greatest pop culture phenomenons in American history?

The trailer for Empire Strikes Back gets the tone right -- adventure and John Williams' score replace the Philip Glass-esque dreariness of the first film's trailer.

Also, at 1:00 in the Return of the Jedi trailer, Harrison Ford's shout sounds totally unmixed. Kind of a cool little artifact -- they must not have been finished editing that audio for that scene when the trailer was made.

wolvernova 2009-05-04 03:11:21 PM
Cannot open it from work, but from what I remember...

The trailers for the old ones looked like crap compared to the finished products. The new ones' trailers made them look WAY better than they actually were.

Hender [TotalFark] 2009-05-04 03:13:14 PM
Heh, I'm a big enough geek to notice inclusion of a scene from Empire Strikes Back that didn't make the final cut: C3PO pulling the warning sign off the door with all the captured wampas while the Stormtroopers are invading Echo Base.

Oh, and despite the steaming pile the movie itself turned out to be, the trailer for Episode I is still brilliant and brings back a lot of memories.

stagirite: Just noticed that the original trailer for A New Hope featured some Star Trek sound effects which aren't in the film.

And some different audio takes. Were those lines from the mono mix?

Stavr0 2009-05-04 03:25:17 PM
To me, the best Ep IV trailer has always been Hardware Wars.

"What's the matter, Augie Ben Doggie? Did you feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced?"
"No, it's just a little headache."

fallingcow 2009-05-04 03:26:44 PM
Also, the ESB one has the shot where 3PO removes the warning label on the door. Awesome.

/ If you like the movies, torrent "Star Wars: Deleted Magic". You won't regret it. Best documentary I've ever seen, and skillfully tied in as the movie plays alongside. Fan-made, of course.
// The same people made versions for ESB and RoTJ, too, but I can't recall the titles--anyway, they're less interesting because the movies had higher budgets and (probably due to having directors who weren't Lucas) fewer problems and less drama.

Roook [TotalFark] 2009-05-04 03:27:09 PM
Every one of those videos had the wrong lightsaber colors. lol. Blue for Vader in all of them and also for Luke in RotJ

I also caught a glimpse of the deleted scene where C3PO tears off the sign in the Hoth base to trick the stormtroopers into entering a room with those ice gorillas.

fallingcow 2009-05-04 03:27:53 PM

Er, best documentary about Star Wars that I've ever seen, that is. Best making-of in general, too.

I am so very excited for a Star Wars franchise reboot. Sadly, I think I'll have to wait at least two decades.

fallingcow 2009-05-04 03:30:00 PM
OK: The other two are called "Building Empire" and "Returning to Jedi"

Msol [TotalFark] 2009-05-04 03:35:08 PM
I like the first of those the most. So.. not crappy. Doesn't spoil anything, tells me why I would want to see it.. yeah. Good stuff.

Oh, and yeah, no Vader voice either, which is kind of funny.

Heh, I was a senior in high school and we used to watch it in quicktime in my graphic design class...good times, good times. Slacking off, waiting to graduate.

oh wow, those mashups at the end were bad. The last line of the Clerks one cracked me up though.

/What a coincidence, just saw Fanboys last night. The last line of that was also hilarious.

and a different logo and no vader voice over or even breathing. must've still been cutting the movie together.

I'm a HUGE SW fan, just check my profile, but that first SW trailer is just. Horrible.

I remember seeing the Star Wars (no, not "A New Hope", not "Episode IV", just "Star Wars", dammit) trailer back in 1976. It made me think that this girl and a furry alien were flying this big roundish spaceship, these H-shaped ships were attacking them, and these two other guys were helping out the girl and the furry alien, but from some other ship they didn't happen to show.

The trailer really did nothing to help the film; it really made it look like just another cheesy 70s SF flick with lots of promise but no payoff.

Now get off of my lawn.

Really? I'm also of GOML vintage, but my recollection of seeing that trailer was "OMG I must see that immediately." I was in 8th grade IIRC.

/saw it 6 times that summer in 70mm glory, 5 bucks a ticket

So damn lucky, my parents took me to see it when I was 2 in 77. Said it was the first movie I actually sat threw and watched all the way threw without looking away. I would love to have been old enough to actually remember stuff.

FTFA: Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

I'm torn: watching this trailer makes me think of the transition the world of televised sci-fi underwent by the onslaught of awesome of the Star Wars trilogy, yet it pains me to imagine the colossal amounts of overpriced suck that ensued from the pure win...I guess it's one of those life metaphors

/shrug

At least they put them in the right order.

(Neo nerds who think they should allow their children to watch the films I-II-III-IV-V-VI need to be kicked in the balls.)

Somewhere, in a scrapbook, I have an ad from the movie section.

It had all Star Wars figures shoved in a cake, and it says, "One year ago today ..."

It was advertising that Star Wars had been playing at the Americana Theater for a year straight.

/Not a fan in particular, but it was such a strange ad that I kept it.

WFern 2009-05-04 09:47:29 PM
It's amazing how exciting the trailers for the prequels were. The only one that delivered, of course, was Episode III.

It was 1977. Sci-fi movies were supposed to be bleak, post-holocaust apocalyptic nightmares.

The TV ads were much more upbeat and were what really sold the movie.

Really? Cause all I could think of while watching the trailer was how it proved how much John Williams's soundtrack added to the film. Seriously, maybe Ive seen the film too many times but the lack of music made the whole thing seem off to me

Judging from that trailer, it seems so obvious now to have expected episode 1 to suck, but god damn.

Ugh.
The Phantom Menace trailer.

They totally should have made the movie they were selling with that one. (That's the teaser trailer they put on the page. We basically got that movie.)

I have the (I think) Phantom Menace 35 mm movie theatre trailer for sale. A roll of film. Highest price wins it.

whoever cut the trailer for the phantom menace deserves a goddamn oscar!

To this day it gives me chills. I remember sitting in the small FX house I was working at the time, and watching it over, and over, and over with the rest of the staff.

then of course, there's the actual film... uhg.

Life_in_LA 2009-05-05 07:29:55 PM
just realized that the ep1 trailer linked on the page is NOT the one I am thinking about. The one linked is just about as bad as the movie.
