This just in: Hell is an imaginary place made up by ancient religious leaders to get the masses to obey arbitrary religious rules. It CANNOT be reconciled with the concept of a fair and loving god. Indeed, it can ONLY be true if God is evil.

Whoa, the only "sin" that the Democrats seem to own is greed. So, democrats are the ones working hard to make a lot of money?

I thought we were all lazy jobless hippies?

Wrath, Pride, and Lust owned by the Republican base. Yeah, that is pretty darn accurate!

/kinda explains Palin

Why do they use "fast-food joints per capita" for Gluttony? Aren't there plenty of obesity stats available?

And why did subby make me click through two blogs to get to the source?

lots of pride and greed in my area, but not a lot of lust.

I was kinda hoping for more lust and sloth.

coco ebert [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 03:20:49 PM
They measured lust according the number of reported STDs? lolwut? That's not lust, that's just sloppiness.

lewismarktwo 2009-05-03 03:31:33 PM
I sure am glad this generalized, worthless study can make me feel better about the geographical location I reside at.

Zeppelininthesky [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 03:32:10 PM
Makes sense... I mean, lots of lusting after their own sister down there.

My state is so boring.

Captain Darling 2009-05-03 03:33:00 PM
Thanks ninjakirby. Looks like the results are plotted in terms of standard deviations from the mean, hence why there are only a few pockets of gluttony when most of the country has a high proportion of fatties.

So, does this mean sin is relative?

CruJones 2009-05-03 03:33:37 PM
I can think of another correlation to explain it but I'm not going there.

Boring, Oregon is boring. So boring they named the town how they felt about it.

El_Swino 2009-05-03 03:33:42 PM
So Louisiana has a bunch of fat people who are somehow getting laid regularly, yet they're still angry? Something doesn't compute.

Lust does not equate sex. Lust is people wanting it....not exactly getting it.

South Dakota is the dullest place in America. Not surprising.

Gotta say - Iowa seems like a nice place.

I'm not sure how they measured Sloth and Gluttony (DNRTFA) but living in Mississippi, we should be #1 in these sins, too

Lust leads to sloppiness when you're in too big of a frenzy to put on a condom.

Oh noes, I'm going to say something that makes people scream racist... But facts being facts and all.

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/05/mapping-sin.html Here's your map.

Here's another map you won't like.

Would you like to comment on how similar they are? Oh this should be fun to watch, screaming racism and not addressing it.

I really don't think tracking STD exposures is an accurate way to put a metric on lust. Sorry, please try again.

True...

There's a lot of proud, greedy, envious and angry people in Arizona.

/They should get laid more often

Atomic_Puppy 2009-05-03 03:40:55 PM
The South is suprisingly consistent in sin. This is the same place where a lot of the ultra conservative think tanks reside.

Hiprocricy? Well yes!

stevec2usa 2009-05-03 03:41:29 PM
Regarding the plotting of STD's per capita: There is a correlation between this and the population of poor ethnic minorities. This shouldn't surprise anyone who has experience dealing with these populations on a regular basis. Syphilis rates have been high among poor blacks for years and have skyrocketed in some areas. The south is home to some of the poorest and most under served African-American communities.

I know, it's easy to think that it's all those Southern Baptists "gettin' their groove on," but intelligent analysis shows it isn't true.

Guess what part of America has the most Lust. Go ahead, guess>

The parts of America with large "minority" populations? As this "study" uses STDs as it's base for their "lust" measurements, why am I not surprised?

/yeah, I went there.
//watcha gonna do about it?

Sherjo311 2009-05-03 03:42:42 PM
these findings would shock if only they didn't come out of kansas.

fyi - despite it's shortcomings, no state donates more money to charity than mississippi. so to the other 49, thanks for letting fema take that one, they did a heckuva job.

It's not easy to bring the Wrath of GodTM to sinners without a little collateral damage.

I didn't have to guess. I cheated by reading this when it was posted here a couple of months ago.

North Carolina, we are envious of STDs and proud of it.

thesandbender 2009-05-03 03:44:59 PM
I'm calling BS on the when NYC, LA, Houston and SFC metro areas don't even register up on the map. Even Atlanta barely registers.

I'm suspecting this map is strongly influenced by income and people who go to public clinics and can't afford private doctors that just end up quietly treating them.

This. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the redder the county on that map, the more likely they are to teach abstinence-only sex ed in the schools there. They may not be having more sex, they just don't know enough to not catch the clap.

"Suck my dick, I'm better than you, so fark off!"

They used STDs to measure lust? BS. That's just a measure of where the condoms are not being used as much as they should (i.e., pretty much always).

So, Jesusland is rife with Lust, Pride, and Wrath? Your savior would be proud, kiddos. Oh, that's right. As long as you believe in him, it doesn't matter what you do; you have a get-out-of-jail free card.

Hell of a way to build a faith.
