You know how expensive that shiat is these days?

With markup, I'm sure everybody wants to spend $20 on pancakes ;)

SpinStopper: You know how expensive that shiat is these days?

My parents have a friend in Lowville who sends them a gallon every Christmas. They wind up with more than they can use, which is great for me. I could drink the stuff.

/hope their friend gets a big discount.

I'll bet that dumb fark has never eaten in an IHOP.

MAPLE syrup has joined the luxury good market. Local retail prices can be the equivalent of over $100 a gallon, more than extra virgin olive oil, or a decent Kentucky bourbon.

I live in the New York syrup belt, so I'm going to get a kick out of some of these replies

First of all states do things LIKE this constantly...

However, unless the state itself is a market participant in the Maple Syrup business, I'm not sure if such legislation would be constitutional anyway.

It has to do with the dormant commerce clause and state's not being allowed to have this kind of economic protectionism. That said there are plenty of exceptions (like the one I mentioned above).

So... yeah. Calm down people. We have judges for a reason.

McCain wouldn't know maple syrup from motor oil. It's all about the pancakes ;)

Birch Syrup, there I said it. Great stuff not sickingly sweet.

He probably wants to unload the Grade A on the touristas keeping the good B stuff for himself and cronies.

Came in to say this headline seems like a law school hypothetical.

Leaving satisfied someone has already addressed this issue.

//I participate in pub trivia once a week. Our team is all lawyers. One of the answers a couple weeks ago was the commerce clause. We were amused.

Amen to that. I looked in my copy of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and I found no mention of Congress' duties being telling private businesses what products to buy. Is there an Amendment missing from my copy?

Emily912 2009-05-03 02:37:34 PM
It may sound asinine, but it's a great idea. It will make sure to keep a bunch of jobs in his state and will prevent the layoffs of locals from the demand for it sinking. If there had been more demand for the company I worked for, I wouldn't have gotten laid off. Sounds like a good plan to me!

yeah it's there, you just have to be a Senator to see it. Lucky them!

As stupid as this is, I completely agree. We make syrup, so companies in this state who need syrup should use it locally. Yes.

Eric: I'm saying that pc people don't kick ass
Scott: You could get in trouble for 'misusing' Aunt Jemima, for crying out loud.
Eric: thats not getting your ass kicked
Eric: and wait, are you telling me your not supposed to stick your cock into the top of the aunt jermima bottle and call her a black slut?
Eric: because wheres the pleasure in that if you can't say "if you tell anyone nobody will care" while you do it
Scott: Let me check...
Eric: did you check yet?
Eric: are you farking aunt jemima?
Scott: Oh man, oh, man!

If the suggested government intervention is stupid and you agree with it...what does that make you? You are not automatically entitled to a market share the moment you create something.

If IHOP offered maple syrup, I'd be tempted to eat there more often

/hasn't eat there since they discontinued their cornmeal pancakes

I don't live in Northeast syrup country. Syrup is delicious. Should I move there? How much am I missing?

Wasilla Hillbilly 2009-05-03 02:43:24 PM
I was being somewhat dramatic with my statement as I don't believe the article mentions actual legislation. So, if he wants to use his position to 'encourage' in state syrup useage, I suppose it is somewhat acceptable although probably not the best use of his time. However, if this did extend to actual legislation, I would be very uncomfortable with it.

This is the same jackass who, in his book Positively American, was biatching about how Americans are fat tubs of goo and it's because of restaurants not giving fat and calorie information. Now he wants IHOP to help New Yorkers consume more liquid sugar?

Old_Chief_Scott [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 02:48:07 PM
I grew up on the fringe of the New York State "syrup belt". One season I worked with this hippy that had inherited an old farm from an uncle or something. I cut wood and tended the fire and hauled sap buckets through the mud and melting snow behind a horse-drawn sledge (so add horse shiat to the mud and melting snow).

The fire was kept going 24 hours a day and when it was calm, the smell of rendering syrup just hung in the woods like an invisible stinking fog.

To this day the smell of real maple syrup or maple candy makes me want to retch.

Just thought I'd share...

Politicians need to stay the fark out of business operations. If I was IHOP and he got a bill passed, I'd close every one of my stores in the state. Fark him.

/Just shoot all them damn politicians too along with the pirates.
//really not much different anyways.

Maple syrup is better for you than imitation maple-flavored liquid sugar. If you've been to an IHOP, you'd know that they serve imitation stuff there. Maple syrup would be a step in a healthier direction.

All he did was write a letter. Yes, it was a waste of his time as a US Senator. Yes, he is an attention whore (he is a politician, after all). But still, it was just a letter.

I would hope the CEO of IHOP gives the letter the attention it deserves: none.

going to Ihop and putting maple syrup on your Grand Slam instead of imitation syrup isn't going to change a whole lot.
