As was mine. Destruction - Bestial Invasion.

Ok, this weeks recs.

Pagan Altar - One of the forgotten bands of the NWOBHM movement. They finally began releasing full-length albums in the late 90's. These guys play traditional doom, with kind of a more rockish sound, i guess. The only thing I don't like are the vocals, but the awesome music makes up for them.

Nachtreich - Instrumental black metal combined with classical music. There's really nothing else to say other than that it's beautiful music the all people should at least give a listen.

Warbringer - One of the best new thrash bands around. Their new album has a bit of a Kreator feel to it. Extremely solid and enjoyable to listen to.

I can't stand 3 Inches of Blood.

I saw Gojira kick off their first US headlining tour on Friday. It was fantastic. Go see them live. Never been more pissed off waiting for a headliner though. Car Bomb and The Chariot are the two most obnoxious bands I have ever seen. I had seen The Chariot years ago, and thought Car Bomb had them topped, but The Chariot came out and reclaimed their most obnoxious title.

Gojira - From the Sky

I'll try and be back later with some recommendations. I don't understand what happened last week though. The queue was filled with great selections from all different genres.

OK...

3 Inches of Blood is a parody, "ironic" band trying to capitalize on the silliness that the Darkness started a few years ago. Isn't metal silly?
No, it isn't.

Between the Buried and Me are the biggest bunch of poseurs to infect the world of metal in a long time. Around here, we call shiat bands like them, "eyeliner rock". There's something with a band if Hot Topic is sponsoring their tour.

Gojira rocks .

So dressing normal makes them image obsessed? Should they wear makeup and chains and shoot fireballs out of their ass to prove they care about craft over style?

I don't really listen to black metal/european death type stuff, so i'm out of place on Fark metal i guess.

Slow this week. We need Kliffoth to get into an argument with someone.
Anyways, since I've got nothing to do today (even more so than other Sundays), I think I'll continue with recs. Let's see what sticks.

Argentum (new window) - This is what doom metal should be. Heavy and foreboding. At first listen, the bass seems to drown everything else out, but it eventually sinks in and creates a perfect atmosphere of DOOM. This band is what subwoofers were made for.

Artillery (new window) - Danish Thrash masters. Melodic, technical, and a singer who can actually sing. By Inheritance is probably one of the greatest thrash albums ever made. Blows pretty much every other thrash band out of the water.

Ulysses Siren (new window) - The best damn thrash band no ones heard of. They were around in the 80's, but got lost among the clutter of the Bay Area scene. In 2000/2002 (can't remember) they released a compilation of their demos, and titled it Above the Ashes.

Vreid (new window) - A band that rose out of the ashes of Windir after Valfar's death. Not as good as Windir, but if you like Windir, you should still check Vreid out.

Preferred Nomenclature: I'm going to a Gojira show BECAUSE of the chariot, lol.

I've never actually heard any studio recordings by the Chariot. I've heard them referred to as "technical" though, which I just don't get live. They seem to be more concerned with stage antics than actually playing. On Friday, the singer spent most of their first song screaming into a dead mic after he inadvertently cut it while climbing onto the PA system. The drummer is mediocre, and the bassist was more interested in slinging his bass behind his back every second than actually playing.

As far as BTBAM goes, I'm actually 50/50 on them. Love some of their stuff, can't stand some. They also refer to themselves way too much in their lyrics.

CanadianCommie [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 03:18:51 PM

So, being able to play extremely technical music flawlessly live makes them "poseurs"?

Perhaps I am mistaken, but isn't that the exact opposite of being a poser? If you think they suck, fine, but lets at least keep the disparaging somewhat truthful hmm?

Wow, that was pretty good. At least until the dude started singing. Still, I'll have to check out their album.

Okay, open question time: who is the best band never to release an album on a real label (i.e. demos/self-released stuff only)?

My votes:

Embrionic Death - released the groundbreaking 1993 demo "Stream of Solidarity..." -- similar to Gorguts' Obscura, but five years earlier -- then broke up. Supposedly back together again.

Spooge - released a couple of demos in the mid-90's. Described as "Watchtower meets Mr. Bungle with porno samples". Check out "RA 1995" (an ode to Ron Jeremy) from my link. The bassist ended up in Carbomb.

And a few honorable mentions:

Ghost Story - thrash from Atlanta. Released a couple good demos in the late 80's.

Crionic - tech/progressive thrash from the Czech Republic. Their 1993 self-released album Different is just that. I can't imagine how they didn't get signed.

Sindrome (US) - more progressive thrash, released two demos in 1987 and 1991. Held out for a major label, but a deal never came...

Another Sindrome fan! Vault of Inner Conscience has to be one of the most ambitious demos ever.

I also nominate Turulvér. Melodic Black Metal band that got frustrated with their label, so they released their stuff online.

Ceremonial Castings. They're on a label, but it's their own label, so would that count?

Fireaxe (don't feel like linking it). Ambitious one man band. Releases all his stuff on the public domain. The album Food For the Gods is a few minutes under 4 hours long, and it manages to be engrossing throughout.

Yeah, it wasn't a well-posed question on my part. I probably should've specified pre-2000 or something. It's getting increasingly common for good bands to release their own CD. But back in the 90's and before, it wasn't that way.

I just listen to both. I don't really overtly compare them to sabbath, but I do like that vibe, so it seems a natural albeit distant comparison.
